An in-depth, unprecedented behind-the-scenes look into the gritty world of illegal Hip Hop Mixtapes. There’s a battle brewing between the Mixtape DJs, the Performers, Retailers and Buyers on one side and the multi-billion dollar Record Labels and the Copyright Infringement Authorities (RIAA) on the other. Its a love-hate relationship and some have paid the price - jail, fines and more. Yet, Mixtapes have become an important part of the Hip Hop culture, revolutionized the Hip Hop music industry and changed the way we hear and buy Hip Hop music. The financial stakes are extremely high. These entrepreneurial compilations are now the root of a new power struggle — the urban streets of America and Mixtapes (the other music industry) vs. the traditional corporate music industry. This documentary will take you inside the riveting, unflinching dramas of this volcanic battle.

Yall might not like the current state of the mixtape game (or hip hop for that matter), but mixtapes are the reason that most of us even heard anything that was pressed up with a label’s name on it. Yall can’t knock the legacy regardless of how much you don’t like the new artists or new tapes. I remember one of my first and favorite tapes was Clue’s Canibus vs. DMX, and before that, Wu-Gambinos. I mean, you do have some wack ass DJ’s out there but there are some that are still on their grind and put out good joints (Green Lantern, Clinton Sparks, DJ Drama… just to name a few). I mean, imagine a person like Joe Budden who makes songs that most labels won’t give the opportunity to play because of the “pop” records they’re lookin’ for. Imagine if Papoose didn’t have a way to put any of his music out. Not only that, mixtapes have revolutionized the way we listen to music because we now have a way to judge an artist instead of just blindly walkin’ into a store and buyin’ someone’s album because they’re the “new brand”. Even Justo (R.I.P.) created an awards event for it because he realized the power behind it and that it was the PEOPLE who decided what was hot, NOT THE LABELS. That right there, is a prime example of the rebelliousness that hip hop was founded upon. Buckin’ the system. If you can’t respect that, then you’re no better than any other corporate Amerikkka exec.

I feel ya Billz on the points you made about the history of the mixtape. Personally, I think the mixtape can be misleading in many cases. Some katz come out with a decent mixtape (using hot beats from other artists) then their album drops and it’s trash! It’s like watching a great movie preview, but the actual movie sucks! I think a lot of half azz artists have slipped into the game because they did have a hot, but a misleading one?
Also, if the music was hot on the albums, the mixtape would not be necessary at all? I mean other genres of music don’t use mixtapes to promote artists and some of them do very well? Mixtapes have become another way for almost DJs to get some shine and make a buck on the side. Mixtapes don’t guarantee anything for the artist themselves.

yeah, coldcallers get abused. it’s the worst, most demeaning job in the world. i remember when i first started in the biz, they would have me doin that and i would get 100 leads per month compared to everyone elses 25-30. they told me they would pay me $100 for each one that closes and in 6 months i didn’t see a dollar. they also were taking out taxes and paying me 1090 (no taxes removed). cocksuckers.

you aint lyin coldplay. the jersey dmv are a bunch of fuckin nazi’s. they suspended my license by accident, no bullshit, and told me to get it back, i had to go to dmv court which takes 5 months to get into. my license was suspended for 6. when i asked what would be the point if i would have about a week and a half of a clean license, the cunt said there is no point.
