Atlantic Records Is Fucking Clueless
Earlier today I got an email from an attorney representing Atlantic Records threatening me with legal action if I didn’t immediately remove the Lupe Fiasco video I posted a couple of days ago. Nevermind that the video is hosted on Youtube, and that all I’m doing is posting a link to it, Atlantic Records is seriously ready to sue me for what amounts to free promotion for their artist.
Now I know Lupe stays on the internet, and I know he understands and reads blogs, because he writes one. My message to him is: you better tell somebody at Atlantic something. I’m over here providing you with free promotion and exposure and this is the thanks I get? Legal action?! Get the fuck outta here. Do you have any idea how many emails I get everyday from publicists asking me to post about music I wouldn’t listen to even if it was the last available entertainment on the planet?
Now consider the countless people who’ve contacted me thanking me for putting them on to this kid with the wicked flow from Chi-town who they NEVER WOULD’VE EVEN HEARD OF if it wasn’t for my site. You see where I’m going with this? I don’t care if the video isn’t supposed to be out yet, or if it wasn’t meant to be aired in the States, this is 2006 and you clueless idiots better get with the program real quick if you think you’re gonna be able to maintain in the Myspace/Youtube/Google Video age.
The saddest thing (for Atlantic) about all this that I was all ready to tell people to run out and cop Food & Liquor even if it ends up leaking (gee do you think it will?) early and they can find it online. I figured that if this type of music does strong numbers, it will send a message to the majors that there is a market out there for hip hop that isn’t defined by fake drug dealers and imitation gangsters.
Who the fuck was I kidding? The majors are just as clueless as ever. Lupe could go diamond his first week and they’ll probably miss the whole point and run off to sign the first kid with a skateboard and anything resembling a hot 16. I’m going to stop short of telling people not to buy the album, because I really do want Lupe to win, but I would also suggest that if they do, it be the last Atlantic record they buy. Ever.

They’re still holding on to tactis and methods of promtion that are simply out-dated…their no longer reaching the audience their artist/s represents and makes his /her music for. Instead of roadblocking new technology, they need to embrace it on all fronts.

Im with on this es. I really don’t know why they wouldn’t want you to post a video of all things. Some really dumb shit in my opinion. Atlantic is also TI’s label, and has done and are doing a great job promoting King which, by the way, is not his best release but will no doubt be his best selling effort, so I can’t understand why they seem to be dropping the ball on Lupe. Let’s face it, Lupe is nice, but he’s going to need all the help he can get (i’ll be shocked if F&L goes gold).

Imagine how people who work at the label feel… they’re happy about the promo he provides (very happy), but the opportunities to make Lupe exclusive go out the window when stuff like this happens. It’s a catch-22. We’re all forgetting that there’s plenty of true fans working there (under the corporate umbrella) just trying to find the balance between the industry and the real world… Trust.

I can appreciate what you are saying, and that you believe that you are helping the artist, but at the end of the day in surely in the only stakes that matter to the corporate Music world- album sales, you have done considerably more damage, and that is directly hurting Lupe himself who you profess to want to help so much.. Lupe has only sold 11 thousand albums, how many of those people who looked up your link then went and downloaded his album illegally and all this before it was even released?

How is giving an artist that alot of people had never heard of free promotion hurting him? you can’t be serious. all publicity is good publicity, whether it infringes copyright or not. people are gonna go out and buy albums if they like the artists and feel like he’s somebody they should support period. don’t talk to me about any of this release date nonsense and try to convince that because the fucking video leaked 3 days before it was supposed to that I had anything to do with the lackluster sales. Cuz at the end of the day, I could really care less what any artist sells, it’s just that I felt like Lupe deserved to at least go Gold.
