Some info on the out-of-nowhere Mos Def album, Tru3 Magic, which will feature production from Pharrell and Kanye West. Peep his new song, Boogie Man, here. (via Ian)
Now the hip hop museum will not exclude ‘gangster rap,’ whatever that is.
Hip Hop takes over Lollapalooza. (I’ll post some pics from the show later.)
Take Back The Land – Proofs last project.
Illseed has the story behind the Steve O video I warned you about yesterday.

YEAH THATS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL I WANT A NEW MOS ALBUM BUT I DONT WANT THE NEW DANGER MOS I WANT OLD SCHOOL MOS NOT ALTERNITIVE MOS
August 8th, 2006 at 10:10 am
Steve-O is truly a jackass. That’s some blatantly disrespectful shit. I’m glad that Rae hemmed him up and pulled his card. That shit was real unneccesary…
And yeah, Mos did come out of left field with this album. I don’t even know what to think. And what’s his obsession with this Boogie Man shit. Just snatch ya boy Hi-Tek up, fire your band, and take it back to the streets. If he’s still on that mumblin’ bullshit its a wrap for him. I have a low tolerance for “Down Syndrome” mceez…
August 8th, 2006 at 10:12 am
BTW: The New Danger was really supposed to be a separate rock project, but the label cut it halfway through. So he just threw his throwaway records on the album just to fulfill the contract. That’s my theory at least cuz dude can clearly still emcee based on the records he’s recently done with Little Brother and K-Salaam who’s album is a true CLASSIC! Check for that dude. His sound is ill…

I know im gonna get stoned for saying this but fuck it
Talib > Mos Def
Yep i said it
August 8th, 2006 at 10:33 am
“Talib > Mos Def ”
I disagree, but the reasons are shallow. Truth be told, it takes alot more work to understand/hear what talib is sayin cause of his flow. Mos give is to you more simple and plain. Sometimes I want that shit simple and plain, i dont want to decipher shit.

YO COME ON LETS GET THIS STARTED IF THIS WAS JAY VS NAS WE’D BE AT 400 POSTS ALREADY LETS SEE IF WE CAN GET A MOS VS. TALIB DEBATE GOING
August 8th, 2006 at 10:40 am
I actually liked the New Danger, even though I only listened to it once. I don’t know why negros are so afraid of electric guitars, like we didn’t birth rock music.
August 8th, 2006 at 10:41 am
mos def cam hard (no homo) on that cd wit ghost. Imma have to give it t mos def. Talib voice takes something from his flow.
August 8th, 2006 at 10:41 am
Talib’s voice gives me a headache. I don’t care HOW sweet your lyrics are, if you ain’t got an appealing voice (no Luis) you wack.
August 8th, 2006 at 10:42 am
Talib vs. Mos is a tough one. I guess if you put a gun to my head I’d say Mos, but I can’t really articulate why.
August 8th, 2006 at 10:44 am
“BTW: The New Danger was really supposed to be a separate rock project, but the label cut it halfway through. So he just threw his throwaway records on the album just to fulfill the contract.”
—-If thats true, it explains the randomness of the album. When I picked it up I thought I got a mixtape. The Rape Over is a freestyle. A good freestyle, but still a freestyle. Plus, I hadnt heard a CD with such terrible sound quality since 36 chambers.

I LIKED HALF OF IT. I ACUALLY FUCKS WITH ELCTRIC GUITARS AND SHIT ( FUCK IF I DONT STAY PLAYING JIMMY HENDRIX AND SHIT AS WELL ) BUT SOME OF MOS’S SHIT WAS LIKE HARD ROCK MIXED WITH SOME SPACE AGE TYPE SHIT SHIT KIND OF BUGGED ME OUT THE JOINT SUNSHINE AND THE RAPE OVER WERE TYPICAL MOS SONGS THOUGH THE SONGS I MISS
August 8th, 2006 at 10:50 am
I’M WONDERING HOW MANY PEOPLE ON HERE EVER HEARD ” THE MANIFESTO ”
CAUSE THAT SONG IS ILL ON SO MANY LEVELS LIKE I SAY I GIVE IT TO TALIB ON THE STRENGTH OF THAT SONG ALONE BUT YOU COULD ALSO MAKE THE ARGUEMENT THAT TALIB HAS BETTER ALBUMS WITHOUT MOS AS WELL SO I STILL SAY TALIB
August 8th, 2006 at 10:50 am
“I don’t know why negros are so afraid of electric guitars, like we didn’t birth rock music. ”
Amen. I dont like rock, but I do appreciate the sound of live instruments. I feel like if it was made with a MPC3000, its considered whack.
August 8th, 2006 at 10:53 am
Black on Both Sides is better than any Talib cd
August 8th, 2006 at 10:55 am
I think Mos is a little more crossover than Talib. His acting skills arent too bad. I saw 16 blocks over the weekend. Not bad.
August 8th, 2006 at 10:56 am
DBROWN – BLACK ON BOTH SIDES IS A GREAT ALBUM BUT I’LL TAKE REFLECTION ETERNAL ALL DAY
August 8th, 2006 at 10:57 am
Mos over Talib because I think he is actually technically superior. Rhyme structures are more solid and he flow on the beat better. Talib might be slightly better at wordplay but he be fallin off beat on occassion. Mos is more musical.

YEAH THAT IS DEFINTELY UP THERE AMONG THE BEST
I Self Lord And Master, shall bring disaster to evil factors
Demonic chapters, shall be captured by Kings
Through the storms of days after
Unto the Earth from the Sun through triple darkness to blast ya
with a force that can’t be compared
to any firepower, for it’s mindpower shared
The brainwake, causes vessels to circulate
like constellations reflect at night off the lake
Word to the father, and Mother Earth
Seeking everlasting life through this Hell for what it’s worth
Look listen and observe
and watch another C-Cypher pullin my peeps to the curb
Heed the words; it’s like ghetto style proverbs
The righteous pay a sacrifice to get what they deserve
Cannot afford to be confined to a cell
Brainwaves swell, turnin a desert to a well
Experience the best teacher; thoughts will spray
like street sweepers Little Daddy street preacher
Illustrious feature, narrator you select
Accompanied by Deck plus the DJ you respect
The seven and a half combine, over the frontline
The ten percenters, promotin slander in the airtime
Bear in mind jewels be the tools of the trade
Sharp veins heavenly praise and dues are paid
Above the crowds, above the clouds where the sounds are original
Infinite skills create miracles
Warrior spiritual — above the clouds
reigning/raining down, holdin it down
FOE, 456 – GURU HAS NO RHYME SKILLS REALLY???
Yo; I ain’t one to succumb to no man, but to command
And scoop up the troops when it’s time to take a stand
Emphatically, deep strategies leave casualties
I creep gradually, til everybody knows
that I got more flows than Rosebud got hoes
The anger inside had me trapped
til I got geared up with raps to tear you up like big gats
for big stacks, watch your back when I send em in
Caught you tremblin, my name and face you’re rememberin
Several attempts, but nah bitch, you’ll never win
Rhymes pierce your skin or maybe limbs we’ll be severin
Take you to the mat, peep that, you should keep back
My ill-kid format will lay you flat like a doormat
that I walk on, I meditate while you talk on
And gossip, so I drop my hot shit; fully loaded glock clips
So get the fuck out my block, kid
As nights turn to days, days go back to nights, we be speaking it right
And keeping it tight up in the street life
I meet life, head on, no holds barred
Born with a heart of gold, now mostly cold and scarred
En guard, choose your weapon, or get to steppin
Lyrical bullets make you dance from the trance you be kept in
Assessments are made before, and during combat
I master my hunger, blow the spot when I bomb cats
One of us, equals many of us
Disrespect one of us, you’ll see plenty of us

Why single out southern rappers???? What about west coast, or up north rappers??? Why southern rappers A sign of the ages?
—Wasnt real deep. Only ’cause when you turn on the radio nowadays, 70% of it is “southern rap”. Aight, maybe thats an exaggeration. But still. Alot of it. We can say northern rap, westcoast, hell BoneThugs, Chingy and Nelly. Location doesnt really matter.
(I know I will get blasted for this, but I personally find most southern rappers shit to be devoid of lyricism)

Like there no wack rappers from the west, or up north. You dig. & another thing if down south rappers are so wack why compare someone you like to them just to make the rapper you like look better??? “Plus, I hadnt heard a CD with such terrible sound quality since 36 chambers.”
^ Am I the only one waitin’ for RZA to release a digitally remasterd version a la Bluff Daddy/Ready To Die. I like the grimyness of the 36 Chambers and I’ll always keep the original. But I still want one that don’t make my speakers sound like the screws are loose.

As for the the thread…
Waitin’ for the new Mos album. If Freco’s theory is correct, then I can understand why the New Danger came out that way. I actually heard about this new Mos album on Talib’s Myspace a few months back.
The hip hop musuem execs finally came to their senses. Because at some point or another, damn near every MC made a “hardcore” song/album. But the last time I checked, we had a name for people who were diverse and talked about many things. They’re called HUMANS.
I bet Gnarls shut the ‘Looza dowwwwn. I woulda paid top dollar to see them perform live. That cd STILL hasn’t left my vehicle.
I kinda figured they would release Proof’s album. I’m sure Em has Proof’s fam set up financially. Therefore, I will NOT be buyin’ that one. And on the real, I thought money was iiiiight, not great.
Es brought up that Sick-O (Steve-O) incident yesterday. You can tell the Wu have matured since their entrance into the game. Because back then, Steve O woulda ended up in the ER with the quickness.
August 8th, 2006 at 11:47 am
And oh yeah… Mos > Talib. Reflection Eternal is a GREAT album, but I was just listening to Black on Both Sides yesterday. Dude’s cohesiveness was perfect on that album.

I GUEES YOU MISSED THE PARTS WHERE I SAID I’LL TAKE THE ACAPELLAS OF ANY GANGSTAR CD I GUESS YOU MISSED ME TALKING ABOUT THE JAZZMATAZZ BALDHEADSLICK AND THE CLICK, 7.0 YOU CLEARLY MISSED ALL THAT. AND EXCUSE ME DID YOU JUST CALL Q-TIP A TRASH LYRICIST ? WOW WOW WOW I MEAN I SEEWHAT YOUR SAYING AND AGREE HE ISNT THE BEST LYRICIST BUT TRASH? WOW YOUR JUST TRYING TO SHIT ON ALL HIP-HOP LEGENDS HUH, NEXT YOUR GONNA BE TALKING ABOUT REV RUN WAS HOT GARBAGE
^no. i just call it like i see it. ain’t nobody above criticism. rakim is my greatest of all time but i know the master was trash. run dmc fell off by the time tougher than leather came out. q-tip was not a lyricist. that ain’t no controversy nigga that’s common knowledge.

VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE BLACK WEB BLOG!
This award means absolutely nothing judging by last years winners, but I figured we could use them to bring attention to the “awards†and the best blogs in the land. Anywho cast your vote at the link below.
http://www.blackweblogawards.com/vote
You must have a valid e-mail address to submit a ballot. Your information will not be used in any other way except for ballot tabulation, but fake and “anti-spam” addresses will not be accepted. Actually, the form will take them, but those ballots will be deleted.
For nomination and finalist forms, the following rules apply:
URLs are required for each nominated site. Please make sure it’s the correct URL before submitting, spelling and all.
Nominees must fit the category for which they are submitted. This is mostly up to the discretion of the BWAs; if we can’t tell that the submitted site fits in the category nominated, then that vote will not be counted. You cannot nominate your own blog. However, feel free to persuade your readers to nominate you. This also applies to finalists; you cannot vote for your own blog. No mailbots or spammers!
Nomination and Voting Procedure
Nominations will be open from August 1 – August 15 in each of the categories. On August 16, the top three nominated sites from each of the categories will be posted and open voting for the finalists will open from August 16 – August 31.
Voting will close at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on August 31.
Winners will be announced on September 3.

Even though Fab style is like “Jay-Z lite”, or “Extra Mase” I’d give it to him over Banks. Banks seem nicer to me when 50 and them were just doing mix tapes.
1. De la (I never cared for them, but I got one of their best of CD’s and that shit is tight from start to end)
2. Tribe
3.Brand Nubian (except for their 1st CD their overall body of work is questionable)
Guru is a legend. But I would give both MCs in De la the nod over him.
Dudes like Talib, Jurassic 5, etc. will never come off because they lack charisma

^ I agree 110% Banks was that dude when they were just doin’ mixtapes. He was murdering freestyles left and right. Fab, I was a fan back when he was Fabolous Sport. That’s when he REALLY sounded like Ma$e. After the 1st album, he was Mr. Commercial after that. The flow was still there, just on some, “baby let me be there for you” type ish. “Breathe” was a monster, but the album disappointed me.

i had picked banks out from the start since that “extortion/cocaine dreams/order of protection” song. then his album dropped and he was like a pop tart, soft in the middle.
now i dont see what the hype around banks is all about, i really dont get what he did that was special. he showed g unit stans what rapping is like, so what, hes not that good, his shit is borrowed now. people that like him, only like him cuz they dont know anything other than banks. fab make sme wanting more (no homo) each mixtape.

>> CASSIE’S REAL “ME & U”
Now, Cassie is the new hot chick on the scene and hot she is. But, have you heard that the real meaning behind the song is very, very sensual and sexual. In fact, I heard it meant she likes to do things of the oral persuasion. Now, If you saw the widely distributed video, you see a video with Cassie all alone and kissing herself. Well, there is another video that make this solo stuff quite dubious. In fact, this underground video would have fared well on BET Uncut. Check it and realize we all make mistakes.

Plug don’t believe that mess about the tax increase having anything to do with the buses. The Transportation Dept gets their money from the federal grants that are applied for. That tax increase is to help fund more employees and trucks to pick up trash supposedly? That may be the intention, but it may never happen if it goes through.

Last I heard Smart and DDOT were merging anyway, so phuck em! Believe, they are not doing that well financially to be making such demands. How can they actually afford not to pickup passengers in the city? DDOT is working on extending their routes to reach all of the Smart feeder lines, so it won’t be a problem getting out to the burbs.

Damn niggas should listen to lyrics. Hollywood Divorce is about an mc and his skills. It starts off as a clean relationship then the cats get fame and status and lose their skills in a ‘hollywood divorce’.
Grand Puba created whole new flows. He is definitely superunderrated and really the best in the group. As i’ve said before Sadat X didn’t even rhyme but somehow he pulled it off.
Pun could never be top ten. Too many other cats that come before him. But he is definitely nice.
Prodigy before he got put on blast by various characters was one of the best lyricists in the east. He’s underrated but kinda deserves it.
I give Guru a spot in the legends pantheon but mostly for gettin to hiphop early. Him and Kurtis Blow could stand next to each other in the photo.
The other cat that never gets enough props is Redman. He is a monster and barely ever gets mentioned for his lyrical abilities.
August 8th, 2006 at 3:17 pm
DBROWN – JUST THE HIGHLIGHTS AND SHIT, I HAVENT BEEN ABLE TO SEE ANY GAMES I NEED TO TIVO THEM SHITS BUT I KEEP FORGETTING ABOUT IT. BUT FOR LOTS OF PEOPLE REDMAN’S LIKE AN GIVEN WHEN TALKING UNDERRATED MC’S LIKE WHEN PEOPLE ASK ME TO NAME UNDERRATED RAPPERS I USUALLY LEAVE PEOPLE LIKE REDMAN AZ AND MEGA OFF THE LIST ( UNLESS I THINK IT NEEDS TO BE EXPLAINED ) BECAUSE I THINK THAT THEY ARE GENERALLY THOUGHT OF AS 3 OF THE MOST UNDERRATED

Truth be told, i never heard trick trick rap a day in my life, but i heard (& seen) what he’s capable of on the street tip. He got trick daddy stompedthefuckout & i’ma trick daddy fan & almost was mad after i seen how he got his clock cleaned & he got styles mashed out & styles is one of my favorite rappers. I can’t comment on his skills but on a scale of 1 to 10 his gangster ranks a 9.5 easy. I got this dvd when dude is at a firing range & this nigga had a gun that i’ve never seen b4 in my life. That muthafucker was hard (nhjic) it shot like 4 bullets at a time.

Amen. I dont like rock, but I do appreciate the sound of live instruments. I feel like if it was made with a MPC3000, its considered whack.

some of the best producers still rock with an MPC 3000 (Hi-Tek who has been mentioned and Preemo). It’s obvious you don’t make beats calling if you think the MPC 3000 makes whack beats.
Between Mos and Kweli I like em together as Blackstar, that’s too close to tell.
