Inside Cabrini-Green
Here’s a clip from Gangsta City, an upcoming documentary (read: street DVD) about Chicago’s notorious Cabrini-Green housing projects.
For the last 30+ years Cabrini-Green has stood tall as the national symbol for "ghetto" America. It is considered the pinnacle of all housing projects, and was once widely considered the most dangerous place in all of America. For the first time ever, Cabrini-Green will be seen from the inside looking out. This is Cabrini-Green’s story, as told by the people that lived there.
You may recognize Cabrini-Green as the projects that the Evans family lived in on Good Times and as the setting for the movie Candyman. The entire complex is in the process of being torn down and rebuilt.

They moved a lot to the burbs. ike Awb said up top, the surrounding areas are becoming big money real estate investments. The burbs are swapping paces with the hood, sending the hood into boring nothingness, on temporary low income vouchers while they steal the properties beneath their feet. They are transforming buildings and projects into elaborate condo’s and loft apartments, and selling to a rich corporations, the university, and the medical centers. This is (after all) near downtown Chicago, and in the vicinity of the medical district. Property is easy to aquire right now, and by the time they are done with the complete transformation, the people they sent from the projects will no longer be able to afford the “suburban” lifestyle.

^ That’s exactly the gentrification that’s taking place in Baltimore. They are moving the residents to desolate locations where there is no commerce flowing. There are no job opportunities, youth programs, or anymore funding that is going to be implemented for the “burbs”. As I mentioned before, they sent a shit load of NY/NJ residents down here who took the vouchers. My manz and ‘em is from Paterson, NJ and he and his fam moved to Calvert County (the middle of nowhere) a few years back. Then you got the rest in Cecil, Frederick, Bmore County, and a few other places. That’s why the next place I move is gonna be in a urban environment (considering the fact that I was never too fond of the burbs anyway). I lived in a apt in Harlem 3 years and paid $400 for a ROOM (which was also 2 blocks away from St. Nick’s projects). I can only imagine the price of it now. The difference in NYC is that instead of destroying buildings they’re giving them a makeover and jackin’ the rent sky high.

In Milwaukee they just approved funding for 8 new hotels in the downtown area last week. Houses in the downtown area that were $60,000 five to ten years ago, are now being sold for $300,000 and up. They currently have a $700 million dollar highway project going on right now. All this and poor people can’t funding for nothing.

^^ I feel u deques. I’ve stayed all over the chi coming up including Englewood over on 67th and union. The jects are their own world in a way like the town homes. If you get in with someone you gotta get out with that same person as if they are some sort of human key. There is always something going on damn near on every floor it seems. People die every day and it’s really a sad situation. Honestly to not empathize with the situation you migh come of sounding like a hater. Why put bad on bad? If someone is in a shitty situation why spit on that. Then on another note the situation shouldn’t be glorified either. I feel them putting out the dvd to show their side but it sorta comes off as being glorified. My great grandfather was one of the first managers of the Cabrini Green projects (Oscar Brown Senior) He wrote about it in his book and it used to be a nice place to live and also a nice area. What has happened is that the because of the crime and what not, the property value has been shot down. This, of course, provides a great opportunity to buy the land (while it’s cheap) and sell it for tons more. sidenote… I hate Project Hoodrats, not hatin just sayin.

Iceberg, I didn’t watch the video cause i have no speaker here at work so I have no idea where it is. But, the one time I’ve been to Chicago, I visited my uncle. I’m not sure exactly where it was as far as east or west but i do know that just before i made the left into his community, which is $600k+ condo’s, i passed some gully ass projects. I’ve seen the same in NY but didn’t expect to see it just as bad there. The point that solidified that i was in the pj’s was the 2 kids jumpin on top of 2 stacked up dirty mattresses. And these projects were literally accross the street from some sick real estate.

^^i wasn’t really attacking the people who are moving in the condos, home etc. i was attacking the system. i have no problem with people working hard and being able to afford a nice crib in the city. i do have a problem when other people are displaced and moved away from an easier access to jobs, places like libraries, schools, after school programs and etc. come on man. moving those people to the suburbs is only going to make shit worse. at least by them living in the city everything was in either walking or public transportation distance. moving them to the suburbs makes it more difficult for them to find jobs or go to the libraries that were in their hoods. the greed comes into play when the people who profit off of this system only care about making money and not about the people lives that are effected by the displacement. you might sorry for me because i “care” but people not caring is the reason so many of those people are living in such a chaotic environment.

^ It’s so many rumors surrounding that issue. The dude who was in the studio said a Def Jam A&R was also there (but his stories be fucked up so I take that with a grain of salt). Then I heard that COMP isn’t on the album version of Run either. As far as I know, they only gave him the verse for the video. But when the album dropped they took it off. I was fuckin’ heated. To this day I’m still proud of that dude for holdin’ his own with two East Coast veterans like Kiss and Ghost. I mean, I don’t know about you, but I don’t know too many MC’s from any region that can stay up to par with two lyrical beasts.

I mean, he would hit you with joints like Casualties of a Dice Game, Ebonics, and joints like that. But Pap goes beyond the call of duty with his insight. I see where you’re coming from with the similarities but Pap has put out more material that contrasts L’s persona.

There is footage on youtube.com titled Disco Nights in Cabrini Green 1977 of residents enjoying the festivities at the Mayor Byrne’s Summer Fest. I don’t think I got caught on tape but I remember being there. It’s funny a few years ago, I was wondering if anyone else remembered the summer fests and then about a few months ago, I was surfing on youtube.com and I typed in Cabrini Green and the footage of the fest appeared. Never in a million years, did I think expect to see any footage. I was a bit young and maybe there were cameras around and I just don’t recall it. I can’t recall if the event was before or after our yearly 2 week trip to Camp Chief Makisabee in Michigan. Anyway, I say all of this to say that as I have surfed the web and talked to people who didn’t live in Cabrini Green they either want to point out the negative, i.e., urine on elevators, trash, gangs, or inquire about the negative. The insiders point the negative out too but the
difference is we didn’t dwell on it because we knew life for us wouldn’t always be that way. We knew that ‘it takes all kinds to make a world.’ Sure, we had good times and sure we had our share of bad times. Good times were the
summer fests and trips to Camp Chief Makisabee, Old Chicago, White Sox Park, Ringling Brothers Circus and Six Flags Great America and going to talent shows at Seward Park and seeing the Jesse White Tumblers perform. Good times were also being in the Mayor’s Summer Youth Program, cleaning and gardening around our buildings and receiving
certificates at the end of the program. Bad times was a child being shot and killed or beaten
to death.
Yeah, there were gangs back in the day and there are gangs today. It breaks my heart to see
people glorifying the gang mentality in Cabrini and making web sites saying, ‘this is who we are.’ My
mother like a lot of mothers wasn’t having it. My mother wasn’t raising any followers and
she always told us ‘nobody owes you anything’ and be your own person. I felt sorry for people
in gangs because I knew it only led to prison or the grave. I use to have nightmares when
shootings went on in Cabrini. In my dreams I was always running. I guess because everytime a shooting occurred people ran. I love rap music but heck for awhile all they were doing in videos was running and it reminded me of my nightmares. But my point is back in the day, if
the head was right the tails were right. If you had a mother and father or a parent in the house
who loved and cared about you, you in turn would care about people. I am not saying that everything was hunkey dorey but at least you had a fighting chance in life to walk a straight road. I believe that is every parents dream to see their child succeed in life no matter what the
obstacles. If you had a child born with a cleft lip and their dream was to become a world renowned opera singer you’d move heaven and earth to see that your child had a fighting chance. It is the same in the ghetto. You realize that you are already at a disadvantage because
of your address so you try to instill in your children a sense of pride so that no matter what anyone said to try and shake their confidence they wouldn’t buckle.
I can’t fully go into what I think what people are suffering from these days. Mainly because
I really don’t know. I can’t label people because I don’t want to be labeled. I just know that
we are not all on the same page at the same time. No one owes me an explanation and I owe
no one any explanation and everybody makes mistakes and wakes up in their own time. Nobody
sits around and says, I want my babies to grow up and have no opportunities and be locked
down 24/7. The people in Cabrini don’t have a monopoly on crime either. Seems the entire city and surrounding suburbs of Chicago are a melting pot for violence. This entire town could use
an enema. Now more than ever with all classes of people committing crimes and the instances of more people slipping from the upper and middle classes into poverty, I don’t think the people of
Cabrini can be singled out. If someone takes their family out of this world because they can no longer afford to live in the manner of which they are accustomed to or if they take their spouse out because they want to avoid a nasty custodly battle or if a gang leader takes a rival gang leader out because they owe them some money or kills them because they want their turf what’s the difference? A life is a life. Nobody’s life is more precious because they live in a fancy house. Nobody’s life is less precious because they live in a tenement. I say clean up and address the problems in all neighborhoods. Don’t discriminate. Because if the entire city doesn’t recieve an overhaul we’ll all be running and this time it won’t be a dream. Crime is not going to stop on the Gold Coast and near the Gold Coast because of the absence of poor people.

This was my home not a place that I visited.
This place is where I dreamed of one day becoming a writer,
I still see rainbows, tin men and a much brighter–tomorrow.
Because I believe that God’s intention was not for us to remain in sorrow.
I’ve been a lot of places and have forgotten a lot of names and faces,
But not those of people I knew growing up in the Green’s
Spent my formative years catching hell and happiness and capturing scenes.
I’m getting older now
A touch of gray is hitting the brow
But I can’t complain because I know that wisdom comes with age,
