Irv Gotti: I did not want that record to happen. I was adamantly against it. I would call Jay every day like, “No, fuck that! Don’t do this record.” I said, “What I’m scared of is you doin’ [a record] with Biggie and you comin’ off like his little man. And nigga, we can’t be owning shit if you his little man. You never gon’ get that throne.” But this nigga would call me and be like, “Nah, but Gotti, I’m tellin’ you, I’m gonna show ’em. I’m gon’ make people see that I’m that nigga.”
Jay and Big had a lot of love, but at that particular time it was very competitive. Go ’head and listen to that record—“It’s time to separate the pros from the cons/The platinum from the bronze…” Real talk, Big’s goin’ at Jay in that record. “You ain’t harmin’ me/So pardon me…” Trust me. He’s goin’ at him real tough.

Yooooo… I in the back of my mind I used to always think that they were trying to out-shine each other on that track. And that shit came out lovely! If you listen how they just trade verses, like how one is trying to finish the story or add another scene to the story, it’s bananas. I compare “BK’s Finest” to a improv where the two best actors are trying to add to ther other’s story but make it better.

I remember back in ’96 (i was 16 at the time) my boy, who I’m still tight with now, had a fly ass Ford Probe with the 16″ hammers and a 12″ sub in the trunk. I mean his shit even had the 10-disc changer (which was incredible for ’96). He would pick me up and take me to school everyday (he was the only nigga I knew had a car the DAY he turned 16) bumping some UGK, 8-Ball & MJG, Twista, OutKast, etc. But I’ll never forget the day I was riding with him and he put that RD on. I was like “who the fuck is this.” He was like “that’s Jay-Z nigga.” That shit blew my mind. I wouldn’t let him go to school. I had to go pick that shit up the same day (I was so broke I bought the cassette, lol). It’s crazy to hear that it didn’t even go gold in its first year because I knew at least 10 other people who had it. AND THIS WAS IN THE A!!

what I mean by lyrical is that luda is not as metaphorically lyrical as good as TI. Luda makes street bangers and songs that you can tear the club up and get hype. TI makes that official music that gives you insight. Luda’s rhyme scheme is very calculated and a little amateurish. Ti’s rhyme scheme and pattern is much more sophisticated. Ti can rip a verse on a rza beat, but luda needs a heatmakerz or lil john beat to rip it. Luda cant rip it on a melancholy or a clark kent or ski type beat.

^^the thing is, luda is more respected on the east coast than he is in the south. i think his wordplay when he is bringing his A game is more than likely a lil better than TI’s. HOWEVER, no matter what down here Tip gets respected much much much more as an artist. When I first heard Luda i rolled my eyes (wh wh what your’s fantasy–nigga shut the hell up) but when I came down to the A and heard that I’m serious when that shit first dropped I knew TI was gonna rise to the top.
