Ahah, I wouldn’t expect there to be a subliminal in an HP ad… but you never know. Or you could speculate until you convince yourself otherwise :) I liked the commercial.. I also like how they didn’t show his face, it’s unnecessary to ever show his face. I think Camel brand cigarettes has a trademark on that image anyway.
I have yet to see the commercial on TV in all its glory (the rip on YouTube isn’t the best quality) but I enjoyed it. Go hiphop!

Bugsytheboss, not to belabor the issue, but you try to draw comparisons between where Jay-Z is and where 50 Cent is. I don’t think a coherent argument can be made here in favor of 50 over Jay for the simple fact that Jay-Z has held down EVERY Summer since 1996 with a hot album or tour. Now, he’s moved onto the truly lucrative side of the business after first solidifying himself as an artist.
As far as I’m concerned, 50 Cent isn’t a rap or hiphop artist. He failed early as an underground, up and coming talent. Allowed himself to get taken advantage of buy his early management and record deals. It was only when a white person gave him a slice of HIS pie, that he was able to eat like Jay-Z is eating.

Cam’ did a promo for Apple already, “The only G4 I’m on is a laptop” It was only right for Jiggaman to go the PC route here.
After some thought, and harking back on my marketing studies, this whole thing, the debate we’re having is only serving Jay-Z and no one else… not even the company he’s endorsing, HP. Not once did anyone take a second to consider HP in all of this as a viable company using a popular rap artist to pitch a product. I agree with the person who commented criticizing Jay-Z for not doing much to highlight Roc-A-Fella in all of his recent publicity moments. As far as I’m concerned, Roc-A-Fellas has been disolved and swallowed up by Def Jam when Jay signed his W-2 form as President/CEO of Island Def Jam.
I played around with the interactive site they have for this on HP.com (linked above in the article). I like the name of one file “Killa resume” Also his picture of “resorts” a jab that Cam’ron includes in all of his recent diss tracks, and also the most recent “It’s Going Down” feat. Young Joc. Anyway… there’s no doubt to me that Jay-Z had some creative license with this ad campaign and included some aspects that directly and indirectly hit some buttons with his enemies (at the moment, Cam might be signed with Jigga before the year’s out).

Seriously cool commercial. I don’t see the chess thing being a subliminal at Cam’. Chess is a metaphor used in every part of life that involves strategy. Jay has the tools and the respect from all walks of life: from the hood to Wall Street. He can easily get a casino started because everyone knows what he’s about. They know he can sell anything he wants. Investors will be knocking down his door to get their own share of Jay’s casino. Everything he touches becomes successful. By 2008, I wouldn’t be surprised to see something rivaling Ceaser’s, the Palms or any other successful casino/hotel on the strip.
