Ghostface: F*ck New York

The following is an excerpt from a new Ghostface interview over at Prefixmag.
Lately you and many other East Coast artists have been criticizing Southern hip-hop, in particular songs such as “Laffy Taffy.”
Ghostface Killah: Man, that’s all y’all be talking about lately.
Playing devil’s advocate, do you think it’s because New York is jealous it lost the hip-hop crown?
Ghostface Killah: New York lost the crown because the New York deejays gave the crown away for some fucking money. New York be bullshitting. Right know, I say fuck New York. Yeah, I’m from New York, but fuck New York. Because niggas is pussy. They is so quick to jump on the next man’s dick and can’t even deal with what they got in front of they face.
That’s why I respect other states, man. New York, I don’t know — for some reason we started to get really soft. And now we act like we want that real hip-hop back, when our fucking deejays is only programmed to play what they playing. They playing more other people’s shit than our own shit. Niggas is screaming that real hip-hop — we trying to bring it back but we can’t even play that real hip-hop on the radio.
I knew New York was wack when they shot my man Amadou Diallo forty-one fucking times and ain’t nobody stand up. But if that shit happen in L.A. somewhere, they would have went to bat for Amadou Diallo. It would have been hell. Stores getting burnt the fuck up. New York don’t stand for nothing. They say if you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything. But we mad at ourselves and can’t even get our shit right. When you look at them other niggas’ videos, they popping off and having fun in there. We can’t even have fun amongst each other in New York. That’s why I say fuck New York. That’s real talk coming from Ghostface Killah.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

May 7th, 2006 at 8:26 pm
I mean I feel dude. The dj’s are programmed. But I also say that there are alot of N.Y rappers hittin right now as well.We just need to step the beats up a lil bit…Nah fuck it we need to step the tracks up alot.Like I kinda feel when nas comez thru wit his shit it’s gonna be some shit where most of the beats are garbage and his flow will just be regular.I went out and bought Ghost’s album(2 support his movement) and I threw it out the window on the way home(True Story).I’m sorry to say I dig Ghost but this new album was trash…And it wasnt his lyrics..it was the topics he chose to discuss(drugs, drugs, and more drugs) and his tracks which where less than poor.So do you think I’m gonna buy his shit again….proly not…Unless he comes with some illmatic shit.I don’t fuck wit downsouth cus it aint my swagger but I dont knock dem niggas for doin them.Fuck it lets all run up in Def Jam and Interscope wit the burners out and demand they put us back on the map!!!!!!!

@crooks thats real talk too, but at least when new york was in control it was pure lyricist and for the love of hip hop you know what i mean
May 7th, 2006 at 8:59 pm
Im feelin what ghostface is saying. He meant it like all the djs nowadays especially on the radios are just playing whatever commercial shit w/a hot beat is thrown at them. Coincidentally most of those joints are not lyrical and emphasize catchy instrumentals w/weak rhymes ala 50 cent and dem franchize boys. Ghostface is 100% right. And who better to talk about the current state of depression of NY hip hop then an accomplished vet in the game like Ghost.

I second BronxRap.com that nigga album was garbage as fuck! He sound like a nigga who ain’t movin no units. He made interesting point regarding the dude who got shot an nobody got active. Takes me back to the 92 riots which is the closest thing to a revolution we’ll have for min. I doubt that will ever happen again n no state because they don’t make niggas like they use to no guts! no glory! I still could’nt diss my hometown though at least not to the public. That’s not a good career move. To me it ain’t about no coast East,West,Midwest, or South none of that shit is irrelevent. If ur dope ur dope period! Truth of the matter a lot of nigga got spit can eat a nigga  on some battle shit but them the same niggas who can’t put a album together that’s worth listenin too. Than u got those mediocre flow nggas that know how to place shit together like pieces of a puzzle ya dig!The government, money,an police run the world. Dj’s gotta eat too it’s a job to them so of course they gon get that paper when they can. I feel no matter what if you got that dope product no one can stop u from shining. If your shit hot they can’t help but fuck wit u Ghost shit ain’t hot. Plus it don’t help none when niggas is bred to hate each other n every way possible there’s no unified front. Think about how much hate an frivolous comments is issued out on this website on a regular. No disrespect Eskay, I’m jus keepin it G my nigga! When anybody hates on the next man when his shit ain’t poppin makes u look jus like that much more of a failure ya dig!

im sick in bed with the lack of coherency to my thoughts but ima try to put my two cents in here…
Being a radio and club dj some of Ghosts remarks intrigue me. Typically there is a person who programs the shows at a radio station other the the djs. This could be one person who programs the playlist of one show at a station, one person who programs all the shows at a station, or a group of people that together program a large number of stations that are all owned by the same corporation. Whatever the case may be radio stations have someone that takes care of this so upper managment has control over whats happening on air. From my experience this is the case at almost all commercial stations, however to be fair I dont know how the stations ghost is aiming at do there operations so I cant speak from first hand knowledge when it comes to how they do it.
Still, I would be surprised if flex has 100% control over what gets played on his show. Another way to think of it is like this. If the top 5 songs in the nation are all south songs dont you think flex’s managers are going to pressure him to play those songs for the sake of ratings which equals dollar signs from advertisements?
Whereas the exception to this can be found in college and commercial free stations that tend to steer clear of the top 40 charts. the stretch and bobbito show (RIP) on WKCR 89.9 is a prime example. Those dudes spun whatever the hell they wanted, because they had total control of the show, regardless of where it was from so long as its dope. which brings me to my next point…..
I completely agree with bronxrap that quality needs to be stepped up. I think it needs to be stepped up everywhere not just NY but since we are on the subject NY could use steppin it up too. I was looking forward to the new Ghost album but after that was released I cannot tell you what NY hiphop album I am really waiting for next. I remember a time when there was one release every two months or less that I HAD to get from NY artists. memories, memories…..(im near chicago by the way)
Too much garbage. everyone gots protools, everyone makes beats, everyones a dj, everyone raps. its too easy now. When I think of hiphop right now I think there is too much mediocracy for sure. Thats why I steady listen to the classics. Got stunts, blunts, and hiphop in my computer right now.
May 7th, 2006 at 9:54 pm
chillson you weren’t lyin’. Madden good look on that link. That’s some real talk from Meth. I’m feelin’ L-Boog on the hook too. I know a lotta shit on verse one is what’s been on some of our minds.
I feel what Ghost is sayin’ too, but thing is, cats need to make their albums worth buyin’. Haven’t heard much of Fishscale, so I won’t speak on that…but if NY wants the #1 spot back, they gotta collectively put out some fire and make the industry conform to them, not vice versa. I’m not even gonna lie, I don’t feel 85% of dirty South music, but that’s just my preference. And deep down, I know I can’t hate on the next man for makin’ his doe. Word @ what BBN2 said too.

@Green eyed Bandit now that I think about ur absolutely  as far as the playlist go. A relative of mine Dj’s for a radio station outhere n L.A. An I’ve went with him a couple of times  to tha station when he’s doin his slot. There b lil piece of paper with the songs he supposed to play an the order he supposed to play it n. With that said niggas need to invest n there on radio stations instead of buyin all that jewelry, cars, an trickin on these hoes. Em got shade 45 etc an they pump out that street shit that don’t make mainstream radio if I’m not mistaken.

Mediocrity runs the industry! These radio programmers are the worst pieces of shit ever. Here in Atlanta every so often there are discussions on the radio about the state of Hip Hop. Everytime these program directors try and defend the choice of music by saying this is what the public wants. And these fuckers get an attitude when someone calls them out. The fact of the matter is they have more of a role in this BS music being played than they care to admit. If V103 played Dead Prez 60 times a day, I’m sure these kids would love that shit. Why do you think it’s called music “programming”? They are mad scientists programming the world of this poison. Other than talk radio, I have not listened to the radio in two years. I pick and choose what I want to hear. I feel Ghost and his frustration but it’s not only NY. Good music is being shutted on everywhere!
May 7th, 2006 at 10:47 pm
*Hands Ghost a tissue*
As far as I know, groups like Dem Franchize Boys and D4L make fun club music, not deep, thought-provoking songs to inspire and move yo’ soul. Why can’t they just be taken for face value? Why create beef where there shouldn’t be any? Why is there a need to bring New York back, there isn’t enough room in hip-hop for different types of expression?
I’m saying, I wouldn’t want to hear Verbal Intercourse or something while I’m tryna dance lol.
And I think radio deejays are on the bottom of the totem pole for the most part. What goes on with the playlists are over their heads.
May 7th, 2006 at 10:47 pm

It’s not about skill. It’s about variety. We had joke rappers in the 80’s and they got major spins, but for every Biz Markie there were 10 other emcees bringing substance. The joke rappers were a novelty not a major influence like they are now. Also, don’t act like party music = bullshit. It does not have to! Kane had party joints, Chubb Rock had party joints, Wrecks in Effect had party joints and so on and so on. Those artists approached the party shit with style.
May 7th, 2006 at 11:38 pm
I hear you, thugacation - like scrolling past two comments with youtube links is going to kill Maddenmaster. Get over yourself, Madden - it’s just a link to a source with some information, just like every other link on every other part of this site or anyone else’s. Chillax, old man.
As for Ghost, as far as I’m concerned, he’s speaking some real truth although he’s a little off-base. As others have pointed out, it’s the programmers and playlist people who have a lot of say in what the DJ plays - not that payola doesn’t exist, but DJ’s aren’t all to blame. Plus you have to play what’s hot. But NY is kind of a mess right now - there’s more press on haters and dis tracks and shootings than on good music.
On top of that, a lot of real hip hop heads still buy the garbage. My man Borkulus buys tons of stuff, reads all the mags, listens to nothing — and I mean NOTHING — but hip hop, and he still buys Dem Franchize Boys as much as he buys E40 or Talib or the Herbalist or some other weird, esoteric stuff. So basically a lot of it has to do with the fact that society loves crap, we keep buying crap, the south keeps making mostly crap…
Last, Fishscale is tight if you ask me. It’s a solid, unified album (let’s admit it, you hardly see that these days), some good bangers, some interesting stuff…not crazy about taking it back to the drugs thing, but I’d have to throw out most of my CDs if I had issues with the subject matter.
Clipserus, your comment is classic.
May 7th, 2006 at 11:48 pm
You know the current state of overall hip hop is bad when youre playing some early 90s shit to some 15 year old kids, and they dig it better than most of the shit theyre listening to now. I have a bad feeling that hip hop is going to be dead in a few decades. Jazz had a really long run, and now its hip hops turn.
May 8th, 2006 at 12:01 am
@ E, I was getting ready to post a rebuttal to your comment, but I sorta see what you’re saying. However, I don’t feel as if Rump Shaker was especially stylish lol.
Bottom line, imo, Ghost should be content making music for himself and his fanbase, and not worry about what everybody else is doing.

Not all of it. Just think back to the “shiny suit era.”
And the other coasts weren’t making rap music in the beggining, they had to relate to NY because thats where it all came from, but in the late 80’s each region started having their own artists to represent like Too Short and Ice Cube out west and Scarface down south. They can appreciate their own artists more.

ESKAY is good for dropping a post that be scaring some niggas away from their PC’s. Ghost said some powerful shit on several levels. One, is that comercial radio is just that, commercially driven. Rap music that is too hard to rouch lyrically NEVER wins on commercial radio. Something that has a sing songy hook is what the masses of sheeple want to hear.
As far as the people jumping up for Diallo, why was Bruce Springsteen the only entertainer to come to the front for Amadou?!? Niggas might have said a line with Diallo’s name in it but they was never part of no rally or anything that was worth more than lip service. What’s really good?!?

See, that’s why we need to ban lame one or two time posters like “I feel u”. What the heck does Jay Z have to do with bringing the East Coast back? Its all about the signs of the times. Music reflects (and influences) society. People aren’t as conscious as they used to.
Ill say this, its very dissapointing how all you need is a catchy beat and hook, rappers don’t even need to have skills anymore. Its hungry cats out here that really put deep thought in their rhymes and metaphors, and you got cats like D4L doing big numbers. Franchise Boys and shit. Them niggas can’t rhyme for nothing. Its a shame really.

Random thought: Rhymefest is trash. Somebody tell him to stick to freestyle battles. I don’t know who’s worse at putting together an album, him or Jin

Alot of people sit here and listen to these rappers when they cry out to the media (except LOX! D-block D-block D-block!!) but u gotta get down to the jist of the matter, it all boils down to business. and chances are if you came out around the time ghostface did, ya business wasnt right, contracts was all f—ed up. and now on the other hand u got these lil new dudes leanin wit and makin more cake than u…you would be angry too.
cuz for real that ghostface and ne yo was up there in that category of “if i hear this shit one more…”. but ya numbers still wasnt right.. shouldve released in the winter for the grown folks..summer for da kidz.

Hmm *heavily sighs* I feel ghost for various reasons, mainly for the point on programming. I remember when they DID throw verbal intercourse on in the club, and heads danced to it. Heads made quality joints back in the day and people danced to it, east coast, west or south. It didn’t matter, but now that the mases that be force music into peoples ears, u get songs like laffy taffy at the number one spot. *patiently waits to meet that bitch payola so he can pimp slap her* but as far as the new york scene goes, I only listen to mr cee throwback at noon and when he goes off, so does the radio.

Why does Ghostface attack D4L’s Laffy Taffy like it’s all the South has to offer? Sure Southern rappers have an abundance of records talking about Grillz, but how many songs does New York have about hustling in the streets? Ghostface is a sorry old man.
I mean, what’s really wrong with Laffy Taffy? It can’t be the message because I’ve heard worse. It can’t be the beat because there are some really wack beats. The problem with Laffy Taffy is that it has invaded NYC radio and clubs and it’s just ONE MORE SLOT that the South has filled up. And don’t front, if Dipset did Laffy Taffy NYC would eat it up - just like they did PUSH IT.SMH.
Before “The Great Holy Ghostface Killah” disses Laffy Taffy, maybe he should explain TUSH, TUSH, TUSH; video and all. And how he had the nerve to let Missy get a verse on it. Explain how “Wanna slide in the bush, bush, bush?” is any better than “Shake that laffy taffy; that laffy taffy”. Explain Tooken Back and he put the worst female Southern rapper on the track. Explain that. I’d settle for an in-depth blow-by-blow on how Wu-Tang made Gravel Pit. Horrible.
I respect the fact that Ghost makes way more substance than he does bullshit, HOWEVER he acts like his track record is beyond approach and he’s not.

May 8th, 2006 at 8:12 am
Not to diss NY but just think about it, three years ago. NYC is stuck in time. Notice how the most highly anticipated albums for 2006 are by rappers who have been making records for 10 years plus and in their early to mid-30’s.
Busta Rhymes
Cam’ron
D-Block
Ghostface
LL Cool J (never highly anticipated)
Ma$e
Mobb Deep
M.O.P.
Nas
Raekwon (not highly anticipated)
I’m not saying “old rappers move on” but are there just no hungry high school drop outs eager to get on the mic? Where is that next LL Cool J to usher out Kool Moe Dee? It’s time to find some new blood.
NYC needs a serious new Gameplan. So far plan A doesn’t look like much.= Papoose
May 8th, 2006 at 8:15 am
NY created hip hop but when you really think about it, they suck at it on a commercial level and artistic level. Seriously. If you compare The Bronx to other boroughs, it’s seriously lacking.
Staten Island had a better run in rap than the Bronx - Wu-Tang, Shyheim, King Just, UMCs, Force M.D.’s. You could say Staten Island has quality over quantity. You can list Brooklyn and Queens artists for days. When Harlem does come to the table, they do it big and with style.
But what about the Bronx?
To my recollection, the best The Bronx has to offer is Big Pun, Boogie Down Productions (not KRS-One), Slick Rick and Nice & Smooth. You could toss 3/4’s of D.I.T.C. (Lord Finesse, Diamond, Show & AG) in there too for impact, but not sales. But after that, it’s a wrap. Remy Ma. Drag-on. Fat Joe. Chi-Ali. The Legion. I’m sure I’m missing some people but that just shows how boring the BX is.
It just goes to show that it doesn’t matter who started it, but who finishes it. This is just a segment of a large issue, which is NEW YORK HIP-HOP IS IN A COMA. I’m too busy to write it out and be thought provoking, but rappers in NYC suck - ESPECIALLY PAPOOSE. This negro is garbage. I’ve heard people say he’s the 2nd coming of Raekwon. Ya’ll are bugging out. Papoose is sub-par. And you tell him and Kay Slay that I said it.
May 8th, 2006 at 8:21 am
I brought Fishscale but the album seems like it’s repping for Newark, NJ.
BRICK CITY!
(Shout out to Redman, The Artifacts & Dark Kent & Lokeyisha Lane!)
Ghost’s album went brick selling a total of 75,000 copies. Move over Knickerbockers! Ya’ll aren’t the only negros from NYC putting up bricks. If he sold a record for everytime someone saw his MySpace profile he’d be halfway gold by now.
I said back in March that this lame was going to brick. Blame the south. Blame D4L. Blame it on the planet not being aligned with the sun. But Ghost has not been the same SINCE he droped his last album. Everything up to there was fire and then he fizzled out.
May 8th, 2006 at 8:23 am
He’s got guts to say that, I gotta give him that.
NY hip-hop is my favorite, but since I don’t live up there I don’t know what parties and radio are like.
May 8th, 2006 at 8:37 am
I’m done with Rap music, by the end of this week It should be completely out my system. I’d like to say to the regs in this room, its been an honnor in our campaign for the fight to bring the RAW and ORIGINALITY back, but as you may of noticed by the new name I nolonger have the capability or consciouos will to exercise this purpose. Eskay your doing a great job of informing the masses, and exposing pretenders who are partly responsible for Hip Hops demise, and my forthright decision. I’ve blammed everything other than myself for this corruption in the music that became the beat of my life, such as Reggaeton, D4l etc., but the truth is its my fault because I tolerated and endured the never-ceasing pilfering of the culture for so long. PEACE MY PEOPLES.

I feel Ghost! Sometimes, you have to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself are you making a difference or just playing along with the game? Hopefully, his statements will spark some action amongst the masses, for a real improvement on the situation? Probably not tho, since there is more money in gimmicks than the so-called, REAL HIPHOP? The DJs are not the problem because they are controlled by someone else. They are only puppets…..

If it’s one thing I hate, it’s a HIP-HOP PURIST.
You know the type. The type that claims they make THAT REAL HIP-HOP and their style of hip-hop is so much better than someone elses. The type that feels if you didn’t grow up on Eric B. & Rakim, Superlover Cee & Casanova Rud or Biz Markie you have no business liking Hip-Hop.
The thing about these Hip-Hop Purist is they forget that THEY TO have skeltons in the closet. cough, cough Ghostface

damn i even said this before this clown made his statement am i the only one who remembers and copped the 41 shots album hip-hop for respect ep that mos def talib common pharoe monch and other put out, yea of course bruce springstein will get all the plug but that shit was publicity that dude makes a song for every tradegy ever shits a joke these dudes really came through made some real song about this shit and you cats dont even know about it and people wonder why real hp-hop doesnt sell the realest shit people didnt even know existed
May 8th, 2006 at 10:05 am
Ty, it’s not jus this site….it’s all over this country! Knowledge seems to be last thing most folks want when it comes to music? The top choice for most people is what’s HOT, not what’s diverse, informative or challenging to the mind!
May 8th, 2006 at 10:07 am
also i agree with ghost about the dj’ing shit but i mean take that up wth the greedy dj’s trying to get PAID. i dont really see what his problem with NY is it seems like really he just has a problems with dj’s.
and i love ghost ( no camron ) but has he ever once made any type of tribute awareness song? was he on the hip-hop for respect shit, did he do anything about the towers falling ? i never once heard ghost step forward and say anything along those lines, so how is he gonna hate on others when he aint doing it ( and he doesnt realize their are plenty of artists that are doing that shit and they are from NY has ghost ever even made a song like “impreach the president ” from the green lantern mixtape with saigon, immortal technique, and dead prez )

The funny thing about this is I knew one of these assholes was bound to come at me with some shit like that. Im a Journalsim legend, the most criticially acclaimed!
May 8th, 2006 at 10:46 am
I don’t feel any obligation to “support†someone just because they rap. In general, I don’t encourage anyone to buy anything they don’t really need, On the rare occasion that I do buy a CD, I buy it because I want to listen to it. I could give a fuck if the artist makes $5 or $.05 from it. Am I supposed to be impressed by the fact that people in your region spend more money on rap CDs than people in any other region? Could it be that people in NY have lower standards of quality in music than people in other parts of the country? That would certainly explain the popularity of “train riding rap rap,†or whatever it is you call it.
May 8th, 2006 at 10:46 am
If you are such a legend then why do you have to use words like assholes when I NEVER cursed at you. Shouldn’t you have a better command of the English language? You have just shown that you are not worthy of a debate. Thanks for showing your hand. Also, if you have to STATE that you are a legend then ……………….well you know the rest.
May 8th, 2006 at 10:48 am

i think ghost hit it right on the nail. never thought of it before but diallo really was like the first major part of giuliani “cleaning up” new york. in the next five years they dropped crime dramatically and opened up the city to get fucked by anyone with money. now times square looks like disneyworld, the nightlife is shittier than ever, and frat boys from ohio run around manhattan thinking they’re reppin the city. it’s terrible.
i’m with ghost all the way on this one; we need to bring the old new york back
May 8th, 2006 at 10:56 am
Mr. Belabor, you don’t know what the fuck your talking about. We would’ve ate up Laffy Taffy if Dipset did it? Get the fuck outta here. We suck at hip hop commercially and artistically? Negro please. Papoose is better than any artist from whatever region your repping, I’ll put my life on it.

In fact, when E from BK responded had responded to the comment, I hoped he had actually read it and would respond to some of the points I made in it. Perhaps unsurprisingly, E from BL did nothing of the sort. Instead he let loose with the kind of comment that begins, “Wow! Here lies yet ANOTHER part of the problem. At least he admitted he was hating though.”
It could very well be the case that Bun B doesn’t know how to read, or just a moron as I expected!
May 8th, 2006 at 11:04 am
I read the full comment and when you start off the comment the way you did, you show what your belief is. “You are trying to make Hip Hop Purists” a negative when in all actuality we need more purists. This is where another part of the problem lies. The young kids are disrespectful to it’s elder statesman. Rock, Country, Jazz and other art forms love their pioneers and support them thoroughly. Nobody walks around saying, “Fuck Mick Jagger with his old ass.” These guys criticize the music just like rappers criticize the music. Being a purists is a good thing! Support your pioneers. Everybody else does and that’s why their artists will continue to eat!

@ Ty… I laughed at a few of the jokes, but dude didn’t really humor me like I thought he would. He’s a better comedic actor than stand up comedian in my opinion. And this is coming from one of the biggest comic crtics EVER. I compare comedy to rap in so many ways:
1. You gotta be original. Can’t be recycling the next comic’s lines or flippin’ ‘em to attempt to make them your own.
2. Delivery, delivery, delivery. A lot of comedians would be funnier if they knew how to convey it to the masses. I’ve witnessed on many occassions comedians have some funny shit to say but fail to say it the right way.
3. Punch-liners (or “One-Liners” in the realm of comedy) vs. Storytellers vs. Political comics. Mike Epps is a punch-liner. He’s not great at telling stories and his political awareness is non-existent. I think that’s why I was disappointed with his performance. Not because he’s not funny, but because a Punchliner can’t hold down an hour of comedy (or 45-50 minutes to be technical). The best comedians are like good MCs: cohesive subject matter. People like Pryor and E. Murphy were the masters of segue. They knew how to tell a story about one thing which created an outlet to talk about something else. Example: Eddie used Johnny Carson’s divorce in “Raw”, which was a segue to talk about greedy women, which was a segue to talkin’ about gettin’ an African bitch named Mmfoofoo and keepin’ her in the house. The of course you got comics like Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle who are the best poli comedians, period. Dave picked up where Chris left off. And in my opinion, Martin Lawrence did a combination of all 3. Though Runteldat was mediocore compared to You So Crazy, he found a way to include all 3 styles.
4. Content. Just like hip hop, I get tired of comics talkin’ about the same shit. Black/White jokes are so fuckin’ boring. It’s like pickin’ up a mixtape and 85% is about niggas flippin’ birds, grillz, hoes, and whips. I like comics who take chances and talk about different shit. Now, political comics could be put under Black/White, but it’s about the #1 I listed: ORIGINALITY. Come to think of it, I really don’t mind Black/White, but be original. Even Dave did a parody of that on his show with the African drums for the Def Poetry Jam skits (btw, Mos Def is fuckin’ hilarious). Comics who can go on stage and talk about the not-so-popular topics intrigue me the most. I can turn on Comedy Central and tune into a white comic who talks about some every-day shit that will have me dying. George Lopez’s stand-up shit is madd funny. He talks about some ghetto stuff from a Mexican point of view. And Kevin James (star of King of Queens and Hitch movie) did a stand up that was also funny.

“If V103 played Dead Prez 60 times a day, I’m sure these kids would love that shit. Why do you think it’s called music “programming
^^ Funny thing is, V103 used to be a Baltimore station until Frank Ski moved it to the ATL. And now it’s replaced by wack ass 92Q (with the exception of the Big Phat morning show), which I haven’t listened to in a minute. I agree with B from EK. It needs to be more hip hop purists. I disagree with that whole “times have changed” bullshit. Changing times shouldn’t entail lack of quality, period. If that’s the case, we wouldn’t have the Lupes, Paps, Saigons, Buddens, Name Brands (West Coast), D.I.’s (West Coast) and the like, poppin’ up and bringin’ forth new shit.

May 8th, 2006 at 12:58 pm
@eskay
…well what do you suggest?…i dont question ALLAH’s validity…produce a book greater in fulfilled prophecy than the Qu’ran…the jokes were an expression of how incredulous i felt that question to be…especially coming from someone who says they have an Islamic background…

D.BILLZ - i agree with everything you said real talk. im a huge comdey fan to especially stand-up i can name of comics im fans of like i can do with mixtape rappers.
i agree it did feel like some of the same standard jokes and yeah he didnt get into no story type shit ( like chappelle does with his weed stories/ or breaking down in the hood in the limo or like you said about eddie murphy in raw ) which is my favorite type of stand up. but my favorite shit about mike epps is the faces he makes and the way he talks and has to gather himself to get his shit out, his facial expressions and the way he says certain things are the funnest shit about him to me. but i fell you on the let down but this is what i expected and while defintely wasnt a chapelle chris rock even a patrice o’neal kevin hart jim norton rich vos shit but again it was a different type of stand up act and i still found it hilarious
May 8th, 2006 at 1:07 pm
“…rich vos shit…”
^ ‘Cause he’s from Jersey, right? Lol. Nah, but that dude is funny. He was on BET and straight didn’t give a fuck in front of hundreds of Blacks… he’s hardcore with his jokes. And yeah, the way Epps say some of his shit is hilarious. The one where he said he was in Chicago and he saw a pimp throwin’ a snowball at one of his hos. I was dyin’!
May 8th, 2006 at 1:07 pm
What up my niggaz Im back round this mufucka just bringin the southern swagger as usual…
Damn I tripped out when I read what Ghostface said but shit he got some good points. Bad thing is Im like fuckin 1 of the 2 ppl around my way wit his album. Personally I liked it tho I fux wit them niggas (neva HOmo). And rioiting is not always the answer but as I read someone post above, niggas aint built like that no mo. It aint that many niggas ready to ride for some real shit like that but niggas will shoot u real quik for the dumbest shit…
I hate it really I wish we kould just get along and make music fuck it u know. I dont give a fuck where u from just put out a good album and Ill buy it, Im not biased at all I love hip hop

..as for you ty,
…you have many valid questions, i suggest you read Message to the Black Man by Elijah Muhammad, Behold the Pale Horse, and of course the Holy Qu’ran…there you will find some of your answers…
ive read them all. ive read shit about all religions and ill like parts of everything and disagree with parts of everything ( i actually relate to and agree with islam the most but look at how it can be twisted real muslims are peaceful as fuck but you got others that interpret the same book as a code of war time to launch the jihad ) all these things were written for different reasons in different times who knows whose right and whose wrong just live your life right and who ever the “god” is if there is one will respect you for that.
but nothing written by someone thousands of years ago can ever be considered fact to me i mean how can you prove to me that someone didnt make the whole thing up 100 years ago, there could of been one guy who made up everything years and decades and centuries worth of stories. how do we know for sure about all the greek and romans stories weve heard how much is true was julius ceaser real or made up is there anyway to prove it ? so how am i gonna base everything i do in life on something written that long ago im not sure who wrote it or why and even if it was all honest and true at the time, times have changed drastically
( dont eat red meat, yea that might of made sense before reyolnds wrap when if not sotred properly a prok chop might kill you that was before freezers and everything, dont eat no red meat , no no no dont eat no green meat ) chris rock

@ The Lanlord… Have you seen the Loose Change documentary yet? I asked because you mentioned Behold a Pale Horse which is one of my favorite books ever. Loose Change is like the modern-day version of it. And all this controversy surrounding the Davinci Code movie aint shit compared to what could/will happen when/if they do one for Pale Horse. That shit would be banned world wide. You can’t even buy the book certain places. I’m surprised the publishing company he used to print it didn’t “mysteriously” get shut down or something along those lines.
^^^ It’s funny how I mentioned Loose Change, Behold a Pale Horse and Divinci Code all in the same paragraph and it wouldn’t even let me submit my post. C-O-N… spiracy.

yea i gotta admit a bit of jersey biased but dudes still hilarious. your right he is brutal but he doesnt discriminate, and with comedians i always say if they can really make fun of themselves like crazy during their shit and as long as its funny and it can pass as a joke its all good.
also yea that snowball pimpin thing had me dying thats the type of shit he is the most funny with. the shit talking about how he was in the special classes in school and the teacher used tell them grown ass 19 year old men to take a nap he said ” i wanted to take off my helmet and smack the bitch like you take a nap im 19 god damn years old. i was dying with that shit

Random Thoughts: Is it me, or are female DJ’s bangin’? I’m readin’ the article on Allhiphop about this chick from NC. But even go back as far as Salt N Pepa. Spindarella was fine and could still get it. This one chick, DJ Lindsay outta BK, was spinnin’ at a J*DaVeY (www.jdaveybaby.com) concert in NYC back in March. She’s on point, no bullshit.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:02 pm
Bad thing about the south tho is that nobody buys cds anymore. Everybody is bootlegging and since I have such an extensive library of music niggaz is always askin me to burn em shit but I really dont even like doin that shit.
Ppl be everywhere down here sellin cds on the streets and its like too damn convenient. Why go to the store and buy when u kan get it around the hood? Fucked up…
May 8th, 2006 at 2:04 pm
BTW, yall ever read Phonte’s blogs on Little Brother’s Myspace page? That nigga is hilarious. He got one talkin’ about dudes being “cuddle bunnies”. That shit had me literally laughin’ out loud. I don’t wanna give away the details so go to their site and peep that shit for yourself.

May 8th, 2006 at 2:04 pm
I kant lie I cop some of the bootlegs too but as I have said before I go support the niggaz I that make music I kan respect
May 8th, 2006 at 2:06 pm
@G-Town - The mose messed up part about the bootlegging and downloading is the lose of good music stores (mom & pop types) that get some of the rare and hard to find stuff! After awhile, if you can buy music online….you’ll be screwed? I guess you will still be able to hit up Circuit Shitty or WhyTry Best Buy for that top 40 and old skool shyt???
May 8th, 2006 at 2:07 pm
D Billz - When is that J-Davey album droppin?
May 8th, 2006 at 2:08 pm
@Landlord… What did you think about Loose Change? Personally and honestly, even though I already had certain preconceived thoughts about what happened, this documentary confirmed it. I mean, anytime Big Brother goes to the extent to do some shit like that, why wouldn’t I believe anything or discredit what was said in Pale Horse? http://www.infowars.com That’s a website where they even talk about how Michael Moore was a plant and decoy for the election. I think I’m gonna end up being that crazy old man that nobody listens to but eventually everyone finds out that I was right, LOL!
May 8th, 2006 at 2:09 pm
And thats really all I have been doin lately is stockin up on old shit. Somebody broke into my fuckin krib like a year ago and took ALL my fuckin music and shit. I hope them bastards go deaf! Man I had like at least 300 something cds and tapes all gone. Bitch ass niggas even got me for a lil killa… Im sure they were lookin for the stash but they would neva find that, Im too fuckin good.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:13 pm
Jamz… Great question chief. They’re not signed yet, but supposedly this month’s concert at Radio City will change all that. There are supposed to be some well-known industry folks at this event that want to sign them. And right now they’re being represented by Kanye’s lawyer so this will give them an opportunity to have a legit recording contract. The only music they have available right now is the OFFICIAL bootleg cd of the music on their website. But you can only cop it at their shows. Fortunately for me I have my own personal autographed copy given to me by the oh-so-sexy Ms. Davey. Their official album should be out sometime around 3rd or 4th quarter though. More than likely 4th quarter.

May 8th, 2006 at 2:15 pm
Only thing Circuit City and Best Buy are good for is the cheap prices during the first week release of an album. Can’t beat $9.99.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:18 pm
Yea Ty kuz they the ones buyin the shit. I forgot yall been havin that problem too. I remember when bootleg wuz bunk tho. When u buy a bootleg tape and it wasnt shit but a piece of paper with a pic of the cd on one side. And the quality wuz garbage.

May 8th, 2006 at 2:21 pm
@D.Billz - Man, I hate waiting for music to drop! Sometimes, that shyt never happens as planned, and they end just another memory! Why don’t they make the bootleg available for everyone to get a copy?
Yeah, u can’t beat anything less than $10 for a CD! They hope you buy a dayum laptop, refrigerator or a washing machine while you up in there 2, that’s why they DVDs and CDs are so cheap!
May 8th, 2006 at 2:22 pm
And thats the problem Ty kuz u have the same quality buyin the cds 2 for $5
May 8th, 2006 at 2:23 pm
Today was a good day(so far!) No sign of stans or anything!
May 8th, 2006 at 2:24 pm
Yeah, bootleggin’ does hurt sales. But I can’t lie because I’m also guilty of those charges. My last few joints (DJ Rob-E-Rob’s Best of Jada and Joe Buddens Mood Muzik 2) have been bootlegs from the flea market (my B’more heads know about that). And when I was living in Harlem going to school, yo, I fell in love with 125th’s pricing scheme: 1 for 3, 2 for 5. Shit, I cam back to B’more and felt like the local bootleggers was rippin’ me off! But like I mentioned before in previous posts, me coppin’ an album from the store depends on the artists and what they represent. I don’t care if Talib and Mos put out a gospel album, I’m coppin’ from the store. I support those dudes because they need it from fans like us. They don’t have the big ass contracts/budgets and not only that, I like what they represent in hip hop culture. For instance, I still wanna cop Power of a Dollar. But best believe I’m gettin’ that shit bootlegged.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:25 pm
The other thing bootlegs do is bring out the music that was never meant to be released by the label! Sometimes, artists do that themselves when the label is phuckin’ them over! I ain’t mad at them either…….
May 8th, 2006 at 2:26 pm
Yea D.BIllz thats exactly what I mean about artists u kan respect. We all men u know its niggas out here doin some real positive shit and I support that 100%
May 8th, 2006 at 2:27 pm
It may be just me, but I went to lunch and popped in some BDP. The second I heard that 808 drop at the start of “The Bridge Is Over” it got me amped! I almost forgot how that got me ready for it all!
May 8th, 2006 at 2:32 pm
Bootleg shit hurts the label more than the artist to a certain degree. But from my past experience if the bootleg is hot on the streets its going to sale in the record stores.plus alot times artist will drop a mixtape with tracks that didn’t make the album and that creates buzz for the real L.P.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:35 pm
Yep, you gotta buy music too! Downloading/Bootleggin is aiight for some, but them real katz don’t get a dime from that whatsoever! Everybody seems to be so cheap now-a-days? Blackfolks only represent about 15% of the record sales, so they really need our support! The truth is, if white America ain’t buying it…it probably won’t be going gold??
Yo, anybody ever heard that mixtape from Shady Records where Donald Trump was supposedly in the studio with G-Unit talking about how his kids loved 50? Was that shyt true? I hope this question doesn’t start a riot??
May 8th, 2006 at 2:36 pm
The Landlord says: “…PHONTE(LITTLE BROTHER) = KING OF THE SOUTH…..really…”
^^ I totally agree chief. And in my opinion, stic.man from dead prez is in VERY close second place. Those dudes get little to no recognition in the south. But we show ‘em madd love up here in the Northeast region. Why? Because as I, Es, Ty, King ML, E from BK and many others have said before… IT’S NOT ABOUT NORTH VS. SOUTH. It’s about quality and substance. But some mofos just don’t, and probably won’t, get it.
Jamz says: “Man, I hate waiting for music to drop! Sometimes, that shyt never happens as planned, and they end just another memory! Why don’t they make the bootleg available for everyone to get a copy?”
^^ I totally agree with you chief. But honestly, it’s not their fault. The people that are representing right now aint on their job. For one, if you’re a J*DaVey fan like me, you would agree that the songs “No More”, “Might As Well”, and “Camera Gangstas” should be singles, right? But they aren’t even being played on the radio. “No More” is a certified hit on the radio. “Might As Well” is a sure enough party joint. And “Camera Gangstas” is on some other shit, bananas. I hope they go under new management. Even though I know their manager personally, I just don’t think he’s doing all that needs to be done to see that their situation is right.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:43 pm
YOU SURE AS SHIT WONT SEE NO LITTLE BROTHER HATIN FROM ME THEM BOYS ARE THE TRUTH
May 8th, 2006 at 2:44 pm
D. Billz - My patience is thin playa! Yo, what’s their manager’s name and number, so I can have ole boy mail me a copy of the bootleg…LOL? I wish I was playin…. I was content with waiting for the real album until we had this little convo (Thanks), but now I’m on a mission! I snagged a couple songs off the net a while back, but now I needs to get my hands on the bootleg. U’re gonna be aight, since you got the bootleg already, but the rest of us are out here starvin’…..LOL!
May 8th, 2006 at 2:47 pm
Man, Phonte is one of my top 5 MCs! Dude is always clever with the wordplay and is always on point with the delivery.
May 8th, 2006 at 2:47 pm
Starks is one illist that ever done, he is the epitomie of hiphop; flamboyant origional, carasmatic streetsavy without sounding fake. Niggas aint saying shit that means shit nowdays. This “new” generation of emcees North and South just dont cut it G (to many fake thugs). I’m not feeling none of that shit! I’m a early 90’s cat; shit was poppin’ back then. I remember waiting in antisipation for the next Wu are Nas joint to drop; I aint been excited for shit in a good eight years. Part of the problem is exactly what I’m doing right now; clicking away on this fucking computer. Technology (see the internet) has saturated the marked with a million faggot as blogs that are so fucking stupid that its pathetic. Niggas go on the intrnet to see what’s poppin;

I’ve posted this before but it seems appropriate to re-post it because I can definately understand where Ghost is coming from. He’s not dissin his hometown, he’s just expressing dissapointment:
I feel very badly about the state of my beloved hip hop. These radio dj¹s
that came from the same beautiful music that we all love are playing a major
role in killing it. My girl had the radio on while we did shit in the house
for about 2 - 3 hours. I heard the same 4 or 5 songs about 6 times each.
What the fuck is that. there are more that 4 or 5 artists so why are only a
few getting shine? We all know that good is not what the radio plays. Radio
is garbage and just like rap music, the corporation killed it. Even more
than music, there is a lot of talk (shit talk and commercials) I can¹t stand
it. And rappers today are more stupid than ever in history. Back in slave
days, when just reading a book andtrying to educate yourself could get you
lynched, people were far more intelligent. Now, there is information at arms
length. this should be the smartest generation yet but it isn¹tŠ.Stupid
mother fuckers are killing my beloved hip hop and any chance we have for
respect and a better future
May 8th, 2006 at 2:56 pm
Jamz… Lol, yeah that kinda sucks for the rest of yall. And when I was at the NYC show in March sellin’ CDs for ‘em, they sold outta them shits quick. Mannnn, I was at soundcheck earlier that night helpin’ ‘em set up and Brook played one of his new beats… that shit was like rockin’ a Northface snorkel in Arizona in July while driving a Pinto with no A/C… FUCKIN’ HOT! You know he do all them shits on his keyboard but the end result is RE-TARDED! Their tour manager “Filthy” (a Dominican from BK, so cliche), is the one who is really bustin’ his ass for them (no luis). Where are you located chief?
May 8th, 2006 at 3:01 pm
@ The Lanlord… Great question. I heard it was actually decent but haven’t heard it myself. I might have to go to Sound Garden before the week is out and cop it. Btw, I heard he got one of the best deals on Koch EVER for the release of his album. Therefore I wish him much success with his solo venture. And I heard of ‘em came out with a book about the art of rhyming. I believe it was stic.man, but I don’t remember.
May 8th, 2006 at 3:05 pm
Random Thought: Is it me, or is a revolutionary, female DJ (which means she’s a hip hop head), who also happens to be bangin’, the perfect woman? I know I brought this up already, but the more I read this interview on Allhiphop, the more I want to stalk DJ Chela and Jean Grae, lol.

…the point i have trying to make for while now is this…our culture IS being dumbed down by forces real AND imagined, and for us to sit by shucking and jiving and cooning, and making fun ourselves does nothing to help us…that aint racist that’s fact…there are black devils and white devils, its just that the black devils are harder to identify because we want to love them as our own…the “so-called white devils(not all of them,ok)†are so obvious and steadfast in their destruction of our and other cultures, they make inviting and easy targets…their treatment of us may not be as physicallly restricting as in the past, but they still try to enslave us spiritually and economically and sociologically, so i will never lay down my sword…

I feel Ghostface on what he’s saying we got to bring the beast out of the East! we can’t fall off we started this rap shit. but what fucked us up was we let the white man in on our fortune, instead of standing up we played the hungry hopeless and desperate roll back then rapped was strickley black now it’s just some fake ass plastic surgery white washed barbie doll eurocentric hype bullshit. there arn’t any blacks (natural blacks) there are all light skinned damn near white people.Or some hood rat with eurocentric features where are all the real black people @? I don’t understand? That’s like saying The people of the pyramids were whites all I’m saying is black people need to have pride in them selves and stop trying to be like the white man who wants to destroy ther black beauty! real talk

Wow, this thread is out of control. Anyway I have two points once you boys are done measuring your dicks, haha.
1. Ghost speaks the truth about rap, and Diallo, but I didn’t see him leading up the movement on either issue. Regarding Diallo, there were lots of protests, and Wyclef even did a whole song dedicated to Diallo. In fact, in Akon’s joint “Africa” he talks about Diallo. I agree that as a community, we all should’ve protested harder in the Diallo trial, and I think Ghost has a good point, but he shouldn’t make it seem like the hip hop community failed when it was the global community — not just Black — folk that should’ve stood up for Diallo.
2. Regarding rap, I’m with Ghost — mainstream rap, bumped on the radio, is all about commercializing the game — but this has happened with all music that becomes popular that Black folk master, ie. Elvis Presley and rock n roll; Blues; Jazz; Reggae etc.
Even though I am critical of Ghost’s perspectives, I think it’s good that he’s bringing these issues up and, in general, appealing to fans and artists to step their games up. I just think, if you want to criticize, be a leader, too.
As far as the Eskay haters, you do have the perogative to leave this site. You don’t see me on Michelle Malkin’s site talking shit to her, I excerise my right to NOT give her an attention — you’d do well to deal with your shit in a more productive way, start your own blog and stop wasting everyone’s time with your stupid comments.

I am the writer who interviewed Ghostface for the Prefix article and I think what Ghost was trying to convey is that New York has lost its identity over the years. Being born and raised in Brooklyn I can tell you that the City has definitely changed over the years primarily because of genetrification and the creation of a Guiliani police state. Not to sound overly nostalgic but if you go to any hip-hop shows in New York the crowd for the most part is tame and lame, back in the day groups like Wu-Tang got banned from playing in New York because their fans would tear up the venue. New York defintely needs to support its artists, but we have to given a reason to support our artists, bottom line the quality of music needs to improve.
I think while everyone is getting caught up in Ghost’s statement “Fuck New York” we are overlooking the more important statement he is making about New York DJs and the industry. For those involved in the buisness, they know how rampant payola is on both the radio and television. Payola is what is destorying hip-hop, in order to get on to MTV and BET money must be exchanged, the “countdown” is no more than an indicator of who is willing to pay big bucks for air-time. While Ghost’s anger may be mis-directed, the industry is more to blame than individual DJs, they are just a part of the machine.
