2006 Hip Hop Honors Info
I’m not really sure why this is a big enough deal that it warrants a press conference and news story, since the event has taken place in New York the last two years that they’ve held it. Of course it makes sense that they would have something like this here because let’s be realistic, where else are you gonna do it, Atlanta? Ha ha, yeah right.
NEW YORK — A six-day celebration of hip-hop culture, held in the birthplace of the musical genre, was set for October in conjunction with the 3rd annual VH1 Hip-Hop Honors show, network and city officials announced Thursday.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, or "Mike B," as he tagged himself for the day announced the festivities while flanked by two hip-hop legends, entrepreneur Russell Simmons and artist and actor Ice-T.
Bloomberg said it’s important for the city to honor musical traditions.
"That means celebrating an art form that has expressed the realities of city life," Bloomberg said after welcoming visitors to his "crib," City Hall. "As hip-hop has evolved and new artists have emerged, its lessons have continued to be valuable for us."
Ok the ‘Mike B’ moniker and referring to City Hall as his ‘crib’ were both uncalled for, but I’ll give it to Bloomy, he really makes it hard to continue to hate his guts. If me and him didn’t have beef for life over his ridiculous smoking ban, I might be inclined to say that he’s becoming somewhat tolerable.
Sidenote: Why is Ice-T always at these things? I know he’s a legend and all but can’t they mix things up a little with a different old man rapper? I’m sure Kool Moe Dee could’ve made it, I imagine he has plenty of time on his hands these days.

March 30th, 2006 at 4:43 pm
babay and simmons wife? they use to fuck around….really?
March 30th, 2006 at 4:44 pm
You know, there’s a thin line between “making fun of hip hop culture” and developing rapport. When the proposed offender is of the Caucasian persuation, it’s tough to not think they’re trying to be funny. But I’m trusting that Mike B’s trying to show the hip hopers in NYC that he’s on their side so when so they’ll listen to his ass.
March 30th, 2006 at 4:44 pm
Yeah real talk Luis
March 30th, 2006 at 4:46 pm
Dang, I would try to google that Baby and Kimora rumor. But I’m sure all that will come up will be Baby Phat results. If it’s true, with that in mind, the Baby-Kimora creep is brilliant. :-)
March 30th, 2006 at 4:47 pm

March 30th, 2006 at 4:51 pm
cause Ice T is white looking enough to make any mayor of NY feel safe?
and i am sure his support for hiphop won’t change his support for racial profiling and mandatory drug posession sentences.
sure you can enjoy hiphop, as long as you arent smoking weed or black.
so bascially, i cant.
March 30th, 2006 at 4:54 pm
KingML to whom are you directing your comments to?
March 30th, 2006 at 5:01 pm
im soo bored of these stupid vh1 hip hop shows, its all defjam dicksucking.
March 30th, 2006 at 5:01 pm
Ice T’s the host of the show…that’s why he was there…lol…funny comments, esp. on Russ and Kimora
March 30th, 2006 at 5:04 pm
the mayor of NY, he supports racial profiling as a means for “effective” law enforcement and mandatory drug charges.
so if you get busted theres no way of not doing time.
which is good and bad for the police and criminals, because there will be less reason for people to be snitches. cuase they’re going to jail anyways.
March 30th, 2006 at 5:06 pm

*anticipates triple platinum thread
March 30th, 2006 at 5:13 pm
why not atl? they got tha venue 2 support plus its more tourist friendly.atl had tha oylmpics.,superbowl, nuermous final fours, jack tha rapper convention(now the rap summit) auburn ave festival, and freaknik….. tha list is probably longer, so why not atl.? because hip hop was not born there? the money generated would be much bigger down ther
March 30th, 2006 at 5:18 pm
^ sorry dog, ATL don’t have the rich history. maybe after them niggas pay 30 years of dues like us.
sidenote: I need some black people in the Autum Ashante thread pronto. ever since it died down I’m getting all these crackerass KKK motherfuckers commenting. (no offense to the non-cracker white people)

South stan?!
C’mon uneckbone I thought that was above you man… Don’t be a south hater… You could hate a individual rapper or rappers from the south but not the whole south.
America loves a south nigga ya feel me?
Hip hop needs the south.
On every rap album that comes out I bet you trace someone or something from the south to it in more than one way.
We are everywhere people we aint going nowhere.
March 30th, 2006 at 5:35 pm
Es… you know you’re wrong for that Kool Moe D comment, “plenty of time on his hands”. You know the car wash doesn’t have sick or annual leave pay!
March 30th, 2006 at 5:35 pm
i don’t hate the south. i like young buck, t.i., BG, a few of those cats. there not my favorites, but i can listen to them. but some of the comments that come out of the south stans, are just crazy. there’s no logic there what so ever.
March 30th, 2006 at 5:35 pm

1 thing about the south that will never change is that they will always be the most ignorant cats out there. as 50 cent says “they dont care about lyrics they just want to have a good time.”

March 30th, 2006 at 5:55 pm
@ Eskay
I’m mad the editor over at XXL tried to shit on you, but hey, I guess a negative response is better than none at all. Because if you were irrelevant then he wouldn’t even have mentioned Nahright.
Nonetheless, I give dude 200% props for his article on Joe Budden. He made excellent points, and has pretty said the shit that you, me and Ty Biggs (also co-founder of the Joe Budden Stan *ahem* Fan club) has been saying for the longest. People are intimidated by Joe’s presence in the game and I’m sense some blackballing on the part of other individuals. The public embraces him on the mixtape level, but won’t show him any love or support in the mainstream. People are afraid to identify with a person who exemplifies the REALITY of the world of a struggling, young, Black male. Not to mention I love the shot the editor took at Juelz (for all the Dipstick stans). Because “what the game been missing” is a REAL perspective on what it’s REALLY going on in our community AND in the industry. People are so infatuated with seeing someone else talk about the riches and superficial that they ALLEGEDLY posess, but hate to be reminded of the uncle, father, sister, brother, aunt, mother, etc. that exist in YOUR family and the families of your friends. I know what I’m about to say might cause some confusion, but some of you dudes HATE YOUR LIVES. You’re so infatuated with money, materials, crime, and other self-destructing bullshit because you don’t have anything to identify with. Maybe your grades in school were subpar. Maybe you can’t afford the nice clothes. Maybe you don’t attract the women you want and like. And that’s the reason for choosing and embracing these negative images. Because most of you aren’t even comfortable in your own skin. It’s bigger than music, TRUST ME. Any person who goes outta their way to support someone perpetuating bullshit have inner-demons and issues that you need to conquer. Whatever happened to niggas liking songs like “Stressed Out” by Tribe? “All That I Got” by Ghost (and his new shit by the way is crid-ack)? “Just Another Day” by Queen Latifah?
At the end of the day, if you got a problem with someone rhyming about real issues that 90% of Black America deals with, regardless of how nice they are, then the problem is with you.
The struggle aint over…
*B More Nubian*

I didn’t really take it like he was shitting on me. believe me I re-read it a couple of times just to make sure. I just think he was exhibiting that ‘snarkiness’ (whatever thats supposed to mean) that us bloggers are known and loved for.
March 30th, 2006 at 5:58 pm
Correction: *sensing some blackballin’* Sorry, I got a few typos while going on my tangent.
March 30th, 2006 at 6:01 pm
Before this thread gets outta hand lemme just say that the ATL comment wasn’t meant to start a NY vs South war up in here. It was a half joke in that I’m a proud New Yorker and of course I feel there’s no place more appropriate for an event honoring old school hip hop, but I also got love for ATL and since they seem to believe they’re running rap right now, I like to take little good natured shot at them..cuz hey why not. if you’re from ATL don’t be mad, just bask in the in 500,000 T.I is gonna move this week and relax.
March 30th, 2006 at 6:07 pm
@ Es… true, bloggers do go ballistic with the over-opinionated and sometimes downright retarded stuff WE post. Yeah mofos, I said WE because we in this together, damnit!
March 30th, 2006 at 6:14 pm

Uh, UH; On a serious note though; I’m not mad about comments concerning Atlanta (especially since I’m not from here.) My folk down here feel pretty good about themselves, just like New Yorkers do; Just like cats from the Midwest do, which is where I’m from.We all have that same bloodline, knowhatimsayin???…ATL seems to be on top now; but for a limited time only; I’m already looking for the next; some say it’s Houston; Some say it’s the Bay Area; some say Los Angeles is back; they even put work in over in the United Kingdom; but you know what?????? I’m not mad at nobody!!!!! Because I’m like the O’JAYS; I LOVE MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

March 30th, 2006 at 7:55 pm
come on Blood, now your like the mad hater. Its not that we hate on the south. its that up here we’re used to music with lyrical content. something that we all relate to. i was watching rap city before, and its horrible what comes out of the south. they don’t make anything of actual merrit, just fuckin partying and sayin shit no one understands. now i know tv is the worst place to find good music, but it goes to show you the movement you guys defend. whats on top is that snap shit and the shit that even people from ATL fuckin hate, but your whole basis for why your on top is the same movement you hate. there is talent in the south, but that has nothing to do with whats on the radio or what people are buying. also, i don’t feel ny ever lost it, ever. if you wanna talk about sales, you got that faggot 50 running sales that no one is doing. and if you wanna talk about talent, you got papoose, joe budden, joell ortiz and many others in the underground. as far as i’m concerned, ny has and always will have the crown.

March 31st, 2006 at 9:07 am
I wondered that too
March 31st, 2006 at 9:31 am
Okay, I have been on this site for a couple of weeks now and the only thing that is a constant is this East vs. South bullshit. The debate is cool, but most of you kiddies do not state facts; you state emotions. Stop the bullshit! Everything from the East is not fire and neither is everything from the South or the West or the Midwest of the Far East, etc. Truth be told, I like artists that represent lyrically. That Laffy Taffy stuff does nothing for me. That’s one of the reasons I have not been to a club in 2 years. (I live in Atlanta) If you like that type of music and that is your preference then cool, but don’t be mad a cats who like fire lyrics. I think most of the people on here that express their disdain for that Laffy Taffy type of music also let you know they don’t like people like 50 or Cam either, so why are you being so emotional? I have said it before, stop being emotional! Again, we respect Scarface, Stic.man, T.I., Bun B, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Haziq, 4Ize, Killa Mike, and other artists along those lines. It’s that other bullshit we dislike.
March 31st, 2006 at 9:34 am
I know I fucked yall up with Haziq and 4Ize! All you self proclaimed South representers need to get your weight up and fuck with these cats. That’s who you should be promoting. Do your research!
March 31st, 2006 at 10:25 am
E FROM BK – COULDNT OF SAID IT BETTER, THE PROBLEM IS PEOPLE GET CAUGHT UP IN GENERALIZING THE EAST VS. THE SOUTH SHIT NY CATS HATE MADE NY RAP AND IM SURE DOWN SOUTH HOMIES FEEL THE SAME, BUT THE PROBLEM IS THE GENERAL CONSENSUS WITH THE MAJORITY OF THE PUBLIC IS NY RAP = LYRICS, SOUTH = BEATS AND CRUNK. AND LIKE YOU SAID THEY ARE BOTH COOL THEY ARE JUST DIFFERENT FORMS OF HIP-HOP SO PEOPLE NEED TO LET THEM LIVE SEPERATLY, PEOPLE WHO LIKE CRAZY LYRICS WONT LIKE DEM FRANCISE BOYZ AND YING YANG BUT WE WILL STILL FUCK WITH FACE, OUTKAST AND A BUNCH MORE I DONT WANNA GO THAT DEEP I COULD ON AND ON, PEOPLE WHO LIKE CLUB POPPY GARBAGE AND DONT WANT TO HEAR ANYTHING WITH SUSBSTANCE CANT APPRECIATE THEY FIRE PROVIDED FOR THEM SO FUCK THEM
March 31st, 2006 at 10:28 am
^ well said I feel u homie
April 1st, 2006 at 10:31 am
I agree with E form the BK; It’s all about substance; I prefer lyricism; It can come from anywhere; The South (Early OutKast, Goodie Mob; Scarface; I even like T.I. and Young Jeezy) The West(E-40, Dilated Peoples, Ras Kass, Planet Asia, Defari, Rasco, Aceyalone), East (The Roots, Nas, Talib and Mos Def, Jay-Z, Mobb Deep, Camron). I’ve even heard stuff from the UK I that’s nice, like Roots Manuva. That stuff that Ying Yang and Little Jon and other ATL artists put out is cool for the club or whatever, but hearing it on the radio all day gives me a headache!!!! That’s all I hear on the radio down here in the ATL!! they got me listening too homemade mixtapes!!!!!!!!
