I’ve said this before time and again…
The hip hop media needs to stop giving props to these fools! Why should rappers get extra attention while behind bars ( Lil Kim’s reality show, Shyne new record deal etc.,etc.) While regular street cats get thrown under the jail and are forgotten?
XXL and the SAUCE continue to reward these half ass criminals for keeping it “real” while the youth who look up to these cats are dying trying to emulate what these cats are supposed to stand for. Unfortunatley 90% of the rappers out are bold face liars and dont stand for shit! This is pure “treason over a beat”.
I’m not hating on anybody locked in the beast, but I think the real Gangstas that are doing 100 plus years and double life sentences for putting real work in on the streets should get their voices heard as well.

I actually agree without Curt… Well in a sense. In no way shape or form should make being gangster look good, its a dark life that shouldn’t have to exist. Most people walk that path because they are poverty stricken and they have no other way out because their other options have been exhausted. What the rappers are doing is fucking pointless, they feel they have something to prove by keepin it gangsta, now don’t get me wrong I’m not knocking them either, but I feel they are in a spot were they can make anything happen for them but instead they choose try and establish a name in the rap game for themselves amongst the gangsta culture.

lets keep it real, if there was no gangster glorification in hiphop, alot of people wouldn’t listen. to say that its ruining the culture of hiphop is to go against the very essence of it. it has always been the way of hiphop to voice the struggle of the streets and tell how their individual story differs from others. some exploit this, some make an art out of it. people like 40 cent ( don’t mean to always bring him up but he’s an easy target), he made wearing a fucking vest on the outside of your shirt cool. alot of kids see that and want to emulate it. not knowing that you’ll get a year if you get caught with one. although there is alot of gangster shit out there that alot of kids shouldn’t here, its always been my belief that this type of music should be kept out of anyone’s hands young enough to be influenced by it. to say that people need to check themselves and make music different is true in a sense. they should not emulate gangster shit (as much) in pop culture hiphop. every song that papoose made that got to the radio, only spoke of guns and violence as a cancer to society. while all the hard mixtape shit, is grittier than 90% of the rappers out there. he keeps that music where it belongs, in the street.
as far as glorifying kim and shine. glorifying going to jail is retarded. no one who i know did a bid, ever went bragging about it. BUT, shyne didn’t go to jail for shooting at a cieling persay, he went to jail because his co-d fell back and didn’t take probation to save a friend 10 years. and kim went to jail for not snitching on someone. they shouldn’t be put on a pedestal for it, but they should be respected for sticking to the code. and in a fucked up way, i think they have taught alot of people lessons who didn’t know how fucked you can get for stupid shit.

yo, i listened to kim’s album and thought it was a banger…and not because xxl or the source told me so. i bought the shit when it was released, took the paper off, put in the cd player and was pleasantly surprised and pleased when it blazed from front to back…i was impressed and ain’t a nigga who’s afraid to say so. i think ever since “la bella mafia” this chick knows she has to come with 150 per cent hard beats and rhymes each time she drops, since many seem to want to write her off over image before she even comes out…i give her props on her music because in my opinion it always turns out by leaps and bounds much better than i thought it would be (all except the “notorious k.i.m.” lp) from intro to outro…and as far as publications and media glorifing rappers behind bars, let it instead be taken as a cautionary tale as you are able to hear that it ain’t no career move or place to be straight from the horses mouths…and if you feel gangsta shit is a exploitive commodity and not an artistic one don’t support it (or watch the sopranos either), maybe christian rap is your hip hop spot…especially since it ain’t like the biggest gangsta mentalities aren’t to be located in those capitalists in the white house (you don’t think g. bush and dick chaney ain’t gully?) trading in guns, gangs, drugs, cash and death under the guise of legitamcy, national security and legality, while it appears rappers in the music industry are blamed for promoting lawlessness and shirking civic and communal responsibility…there goes some irony for yo’ ass. i mean think about it, you think the world falls in line behind the u.s. out of repect for our laws and diplomacy or because we got the biggest guns? not saying it’s right or wrong but that gangsta mental(ity) is the way of this world…peace!

He didn’t go in the club shooting at everyone. Read the facts before you start preaching. Someone started shotting, either at him or just “shooting” in general(it was actually started cuz off diddy, and shyne just had his back, lol IRONIC!). Shyne being involved in whatever was going on, got a gun HANDED to him. And not only him, but Diddy started shooting. The ballistics expert said there was no real proof that shynes’ gun fired the bullet that hit(scratched) the victim, since shynes bullets bounced off the ceiling, so even if it was his gun that fired, like Shyne said, he was just shooting up in the air(I guess to make the other nigga stop). And the witness originally said that Diddy shot at her. Then during trial, she said that it wasn’t him, she switched to saying it was actually Shyne who fired! I mean how you gonna switch your story a few months later? PLUS, there was phone records of Diddy calling that specifically witness, BEFORE She CHANGED her testimony. Shyne repeatedly asked to change his lawyer, saying he wasn’t being represented right, since PUFFY was calling all the shots.
You add that shit up! Besides, Shyne got shot AT less than a month before that incident, in front of DIDDYS house, so maybe that explains him being maybe scared, and thats why He just shot up in the air, to make niggas think He was shooting back, but I truly believe He did not mean to kill(or harm) nobody. I might be a lil’ naive but I truly think that Shyne is one of the only honorable gangsters(not gangstA’) dudes in this game, meaning loyal, and taking responsability for his action. I mean, EVEN the lady who got hurt was known to sue the shit outta everyone, She was in a reality COURT SHOW, AND SHE LOST THE CASE BEACAUSE THE JUDGE COUNCLUDED THAT SHE WAS LYING!!!!.
Even before him being in that trial bullshit, just for being grateful of gettin’ signed, and seeing a light, meaning that He didn’t have to do DIRT to succeed in life, he started practicing his religion, and fasting for I dont know how many hours a week, and also practicing that bullshit where you dont fuck(have sex), as a sign of being grateful, cuz he’s hebrew.
Either way, I know He diserved some kind of punishment, which even He admits, but the shit He got was a LITTLE too extreme, and don’t tell me it was to prove a point, cuz that is THE BIGGEST BULLSHIT YOU CAN HEAR!!!!! I mean, how many people actually change or use shyne(or anyone who is used as an “example”) to CHANGE???? I mean on one side you got shyne with some NOT SO BIG CHARGES getting TEN FUCKING YEARS! and on the other side you have Cassidy KILLING a dude and only getting 8 months!
I truly admire Shyne for not losing it, cuz’ I know I woulda went crazy by now. but after hearing shit like that, you start to wonder why other countries hate(terrorize) America.

the talk about gangster rap in this thread has me intrigued. Can Hip Hop survive without gangster rap? what do yall think? It wasnt there at the jump but it has been here a while (I just put on my Just Ice lp for reference) and seems to have a dominating presence, such so that I dont think it will be going anywhere anytime soon.
I am a dj so I cop some of it for my crowds, but that is the only time I play it. I prefer music that makes me think so at home I listen to some other shit. thats just me though.
*side note: I do listen to OLDER gangster shit as it is FUN. I dont find much fun in yayo or artists of his ilk.

ok, now lemme play devils advocate…did any of you actually read either of these articles? if you did, then tell me that you actually think they’re glorifying either of their situations. the sense I got from both of them was that jail sucks and nobody wants to be there.
Like it or not, jail is a big issue for people in our communities and I don’t see how ignoring it is even an option. I mean look at the number of rappers in jail right now, should we all just act like they’re not there, like it has nothing to do with us? I don’t know about ya’ll but if I’m with a group of my friends, there’s a pretty good chance that I’m with at least 1 or 2 felons at any given time.
I understand that in hip hop, sometimes jail is glorified which has gotta be the stupidest shit you could ever do, but I don’t think relaying these people’s situations back to the people who bought their music and watched them on TV is neccessarily glorifying their actions.
