Fat Joe Dropped From Atlantic?
I may regret this later, but I’m using the Post as a source again. Apparently there was an item somewhere in today’s edition (where exactly I don’t know, because I just scoured the print edition and the website) that ALLEGES that Fat Joe has been released from his Atlantic contract. A trusted friend emailed me about it, I understand Star brought it up on his show, and message boards are on fire discussing it. Here is part of the ALLEGED piece that contains the ALLEGATION:
It didn’t matter that FAT JOE had the entire country "leaning back" two summers ago. Music insiders report that the portly Bronx Rapper has been dumped by his music label, Atlantic Records. According to sources, despite Atlantic’s six-figure marketing and promotional campaign, Joe’s last album, "All or Nothing" only sold about 287,000 copies.
Joe, aka Jose Antonio Cartegena III, is very popular for cameo’s and duets with other artists, including Jennifer Lopez, Nelly and the hungry reggaton set, but he just doesn’t have the traction where it counts-at the cash registers.
It goes on to say that Joe worked out some deal with them where they will still distribute his albums but he has to cover marketing, promotion, and production costs himself. Something tells me Remy Ma is somewhere smirking her ass off. Of course the G-Unit stans will find some way to attribute this to their leader, even though it’s pretty obvious Joe’s mediocre album sales are to blame.

The 50 cent rumour might be true though I highly doubt it. It’s one thing to “ALLEGEDLY” drop a dime on jah and ALLEGEDLY get someone kicked off a label entirely… that means he would have to convince another head honcho that there was more money to be made with Joe off the album.. not sure 50 carries that kind of power.. I think his talents are limited to a lesser level.

I spoke on this in one of the other post(3/6)about veteran artist tryin to cater to the masses this is the perfect example. Besides lean back I felt his other singles were forced(get it poppin/nelly)that shit was like mixin oil an water. Not takin nothin away from joe(because from my understanding he’s a real strong figure in his hood)but,you gotta stay true to your roots as far as music is concerned. Now this the same nigga who was talkin shit about Nas signin to def jam but, he(Nas)remains true to his music ya dig. So if Nas drops a album that doesn’t do good he still did him as a artist. As much as I like Fat Joe (meet him a couple of times in Miami), this goes to show you how much of a distance there is between people like Jay-Z and Crack. Instead of focusing on his career and TS, he devoted to much energy to 50. Whats even more disappointing is that Joe is latino and can’t move more than 300,000 units. Jay is up over 300 million and can sell 2 mil whenever he feels like it because his mind is right. He can bounce back, but he needs to take inventory of whats important and take care of that.

50 is one of them artist who plays them self out. We have all lost interest in him, he is no longer “the hood’s child who made it” he is the “annoying nigga who laughs at everyone and acts childish at awards shows and threatens people w/ security and CSI backup”!

Now Fat Joe has credibility in the streets of NY, but in Miami, I personally dont care for him and I dont know to many people who do! He’s spanish, but thats about all I can relate to ya’ll. Dudes need to get they hustle game up in the rap game! Joe has good songs, with the POTENTIAL to make it pop! Whats hurting NYC hiphop is an inability to sell.When you dont make sales you loose record deals, or worst yet your record company wont invest money into marketing, promotions or videos.
You can put out grimy mixtapes all year long, but at the end of the day if your music doesn’t appeal to the masses you ain’t going to last long. Or worst yet you’ll struggle for for 5 -10 years and end up broke with a bad taste in your mouth and mad at the new guy whos making a killing because he learned early how to play the game.
Hiphop is just like everyother business (Econmics 101) if your business is not profitable pretty soon you’ll be looking for a new line of work.Why do you think so many rappers are trying to crossover into other things.You have a certain amount of time to get it popping, if you dont people will look at you as that guy whos nice on mixtapes and and doing verses on other rappers sh*t.

I cant blame you guys you dont know any better. Sometimes record labels sign dudes, just for tax right offs. Its their job to market and promote the artist, nowadays the want the artist to do the leg work and have a buzz already. In Joes case he’s already a fixture, and all he needs is a lead single and a distribution deal. So hes good, and owes no money back to the record company for expenses. In my oppinion hes better off.

i dont know maybe my ears don’t work or something but 50 is GARBAGE i repeat GARBAGE. there comes a time in hip hop where the game gets stale. Lets travel back to 98 when the game was all about shiny suits platinum chains and watches everyone was looking for a savior that man was DMX. real talk. you could’nt go no where without hearing this man mixtapes guest features & so on. back to the future in 02 ja rule and murder inc was doing it real big at this point all of ja albums went double triple platinum to this day ja has the number 1 selling single in def jam history. so basiclly what im saying is its all about timing people was getting tired of that bubble gum shit and needed a savior thats where curtis stepped in it was an alternative. most people knew how many bullets he took before they heard him spit. that was his sales pitch. his first album was average wit top notch production the massacare that was a joke and whenever his new album come out thats gonna be a coffee coaster 4 real. they say time repeat itself so we’ll just have to wait and see who will be hip hops next savior.
