In particular, you address your displeasure with the Stop Snitchin’ campaign. I urge people to read the article, but tell me, in a nutshell, why you feel that way…

Chuck D: What I’m sayin’ is – to make this even smaller than a nutshell – is that I’m so ticked off of smarter people havin’ to dumb themselves down to feel comfortable with themselves in society. It’s not a Black thing homie, it’s an American thing. Americanism encourages people not to be smart, not to figure out what’s really goin’ on in the first place. So when it comes down to it, to see college journalists actually accept these aspects in Hip-Hop just so they can feel like they’re down with it, or down with the streets, this is a ridiculous notion. At the end of the streets, are two industries – jail and death, which are highly profitable for everybody other than who comes up out of the hood. [laughs] So I think, if somebody’s smart, and they know better, than they should say better. The whole snitchin’ aspect – if your mom needs to get from one place to another safely, how you gonna actually say she don’t need no protection? If you can’t protect her, who the hell can? No doubt, most of us would not take the time to post to this site if we didn’t care about hip hop culture…so I feel you on what you are saying…I can’t be hyprocritical and say I have completely stopped my usage as well, but with 2 sons and a daughter, my awareness has changed for the better.

What is up with Tip anyway, I thought he had a new album coming out?

I understand that the word was likely first adopted by our people trying to identify with their oppressors in order to feel superior to the other slaves around them; belittling their brothers and sisters in a weak attempt at self esteem in a world where they were taught that the value of a black life was next to nothing.

I also understand that language is fluid and often nowadays intent precedes etimology. So when a certain individual says ‘wsup my nigga’ I understand what he means ‘friend/brother’. Just like I know that when my British friend says he wants a ‘fag’ he means he wants a cigarrette. We all speaking the same english, just the variation that we picked up on our own journey.

I mentioned the Tip song cuz I feel he explained it objectively and from the perspective of the average cat who uses the word. To get to the point, a lot of hip hoppers are going to use it and you can either factor that in and understand their intent, or keep wasting energy and breath. For me I think its enough to work on just curbing my use of the word.
