Spike Lee vs. Snoop Dogg

snoop-pimpin.jpg

Spike Lee recently aired out Snoop during a Black History Month speech he was giving at the University of Florida. While Snoop wasn’t his only target, he reportedly brought up the rapper’s name several times during his diatribe against stereotypical images and the exploitation of women in hip hop and black culture. I love you Snoop, but I’m going to have to stand up and say that I’m with Spike on this one. I feel like there’s a time and a place for this kind of behavior and it’s not on BET at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Damn it feels weird saying that…but hey when you have children, you start to think about and see things from a whole new perspective. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for artistic freedom, authentic portrayal of real life and all that good stuff, but there’s a point when it just starts to get ridiculous and embarrassing. I don’t know anybody who dresses or acts like The Bishop Don Magic Juan, and I don’t want that type of image to be the first thing that comes to peoples minds when they hear the phrase ‘hip hop’.

thats weird, earlier today on the subway i was thinking about the 5 things that signaled the decline of hip-hop’s perception, and also the top artists to spur the most stereotyping of Black people. in the list was Cash Money’s rise in the early 2000s, 50 Cent, and Snoop. dude has charisma, but put banking way in front of conveying anything sensible. “time to get grown”.

yo man how old you… the other day i read on the PSA that u understand that anyone that was born after 1987 is allowed to… and now you say when you have a kid you see things in a different perspective…
just a question dont me to put you on the spot…

  5. eskay Says:

it’s all good, I’m 28, but what does one (the ’87 comment) have to do with the other (having kids)?

When you think of hip hop, those types of images come up ? When i think of hip hop i think of sick beats and fire lyrics.

  9. Raymond Chiu Says:

its about time someone aired it out

  10. KingML Says:

All Spike Lee does is bitch and complain, Bill Gates has done more for black people than him, he should shut his mouth and start making more “afro-centric” films that celebrate the “real way black people live”.

    He makes me sick.

And BTW, Bill Gates just donated some 600 million to tuberculosis centering around African countries where this is considered an epidemic if you thought I was kidding.

im with eskay i love snoop but come on man give this shit up your making youself hip-hop blacks shit your making americans look bad, and i agree with yu click click on how you feel when you think hip-hop and that how i feel ( when i think hip-hop i think tupac big L krs de la soul tribe gangstarr joe budden wu tang jay-z and so much more ) but thats not eskays problem its how the average motherfucker views hip-hop and when the average person thinks of hip-hop they get these views into their head. all you see shown is negative images and that gives hip-hop a bad name to the people who dont always love it.

to qoute chris rock ” i love hip-hop i looooooooooooveee it but im am tired of defending it, it used to be easy back in the day to defend hip-hop, andexplain why it was art why run dmc was art why grandmasterflash was art, but nowadays it gets much harder to defend, i like hip-hop but its hard to defend MOVE BITCH GET OUT MY WAY, or I GOT HOES IN DIFFERENT AREA CODES ”

people that ;isten to hip-hop know good real hip-hop everyone who doesnt thinks its all about pimping selling drugs killing and gangbanging and showing off their shiney rims thats how people outside of hip-hop look at people in hip-hop or that listen to it and that why i really fuck with how jay-z handling his B.I. now because he is getting his grown man on and helping put hip-hop in a better light

  13. THESP1200 Says:

Its a real shame what KingML said about Spike Lee. Too much watching Bill Gates and not paying attention.

“…he should shut his mouth and start making more “afro-centric” films that celebrate the “real way black people live”.

60 to 70 percent of black people in the film business came thru this dudes camp. Not just actors, all the behind the scenes people also. There’s black people in various film unions now cause he opened the door for them. Before Spike Lee, what black films where you watching since the 70′s that got your attention. Who had the nerve to promote “MAKE BLACK FILM’ throughout the 90′s and so on. He put crazy money and also teaches classes to this day at NYU for young up and coming black filmmakers.

This is the reason why he doesnt have Bill Gates money to give cause people like you, as usual, shut down and dont acknowledge and support those that need it. I guarantee that Spike contributed more to your actual life that Bill Gates. What you say when Bill Gates uses his INVESTMENT in those african countries to his benefit? And how?

  14. eskay Says:

    >>When you think of hip hop, those types of images come up ? When i think of hip hop i think of sick beats and fire lyrics.

uhmm of course not, that’s my whole point

  15. T Nelson Says:

yeah snoop been shuckin and jivin for a minute now he went from being one of the most feared nigga’s of white america to whatever it is he is now

  16. what Says:

TYRONE – i don’t think the point was to necessarily say that snoop is making hip-hop look back. he’s making everyone look bad, period. i don’t know how old you are, but when you do reach a certain age, you start considering what your actions and behavior mean in the larger frame. if you’re at snoop’s age and your only focus is still just being the weird funny dude who dresses stupid and makes white girls giggle, it’s time to sit back and reflect on what you’re really doing for scores of young kids that look up to you, and how scores of people who percieve hip-hop and sometimes black people in general. and dude, fuck bill gates. are you that naive to think he’s more pertinent than spike lee?

  17. She's So Real Says:

I feel you man, my whole view on things changed after I had children as well. Artists are role models whether they like that shit or not.

who did you want to be like when you were 14? as for me, it wasn’t my momma, it wasn’t Coretta King.. I wanted to be a little like t-boz. I wanted to be a little like Foxy Brown. I wanted to be a little like Lauryn Hill.

I think yall get my point.

  18. HOLLYHOOD (FUTURE G-UNIT ARTIST) Says:

    DAMN ESKAY IS 28. OLD

  19. KingML Says:

Spike Lee makes shitty movies, Bill Gates provides money that saves lives.

Sure you can say Spike Lee is pertinent, but not much is more pertinent than saving peoples lives. Regardless of how you do it.

  20. HOLLYHOOD (FUTURE G-UNIT ARTIST) Says:

NOW SPIKE LEES MOVIE ARE NOT ALWAYS SHITTY THET ALITE. BUT DAMN SNOOP? WHAT HE DO PINP YO HOE? HA HA

  21. HOLLYHOOD (FUTURE G-UNIT ARTIST) Says:

AND YES I MEAN “PINP”. BUT THAT THET SHIT WAS A STR8T UP TYPO. SEE EVEN I MAKE MISTAKES…JUST LIKE SPIKE LEE. GET EM SNOOP! SIK EM!

  22. click click Says:

Dont you think if Spike Lee had Billions like Gates, he would save as many lives? Or donate millions just like Gates? Gates is just in a better position. It helps to be the worlds richest man

Snoop…pimpin ain’t easy. Lets see how your daughter feels about this. Maybe she can work for Biship Dumb Juan right?

  25. posta child Says:

Its sad that it is easier to try and dismiss Spike Lee than to say that Snoop is exactly what everyone (including) views people like him and any black male. From some the posts, it can easy to see that they are from the very idealistic white point of view. Master P, 50 cent, and all the others who have sold out not only a culture but a race should be denounced. Even when people can come into the country without any contact (young) black males yet have such a negative view of them can be traced, all or in part, to these modern sambos. Snoop is funny. What is his total impact? What is the impression that everyone who is able to see Snoop left with? Think about the big picture.

i think you misunderstood what i was saying because i couldnt agree more with you. im 25 years old and over the last couple of years have to come to find all that shit to ridiculous and an ebarresment to us as fuckin human beings but the said part is people eat it up because there are still millions that look up to this shit

  27. SadDamnYouAll Says:

Snoop’s defense all these years has always been…”Other people exploit women, why can’t rappers ?” Well the point is that since black people have historically gone through so much…one would think that there would be certain obligations to decency that would automatically come with the territory! However when it comes to these mutherfuckers nothing is sacred! Now all you niggaz wanna’ have a change of heart when you birth a daughter into the world? Fuck that! It’s too late! Get ready for thug nigguz squirtin’ coke infested loads into your daughter can!

  28. Curt McGirt Says:

Spike has every right to speak his mind. If you have noticed, while these other clown ass muthafuckas were shuckin’ and jivin’ and playin the “Minstrel Show” for “Massa” Spike made movies that made you think and evaluate your own Blackness yet still entertaining. The man did not sell out for a quick dollar (Although some will argue over the early Nike commercials, I oppose that argument because he changed the game in “urban marketing”) or tried to please corporate white america with the average hood film starring your favorite rapper turned actor.

Also, Why is it that us Black Folk get upset when we tell it like it is? every body aint trying to hate because we aint rich as some of these dudes so dont go there. I think that it’s about time that some cats in the industry start to name names and say what they feel.

Why is it cool to for niggas to diss other niggas on a record for publicity, but it’s not cool for a well respected Black Man to speak his mind? Yall got me fucked up!
