Sheek recently spoke with SOHH:

"The whole thing is, we were not trying to get off Interscope, we were gonna be under the same umbrella and go with Jay[Z], which Jimmy Iovine was cool with. But a lot of things were put in the way. Not to put everything on him, but ya boy 50 over there trying to stop Styles’ project, and ‘don’t play this record’, etc. He couldn’t get at us lyrically so he had to go other routes and it’s not a fair fight over here. So we said we’re gonna focus on everything we got coming from D-Block and [wait] until they get it together and are ready to talk real shit."

Save Tookie

In case you’re living under a rock, you’ve probably heard that Crips co-founder Stanley ‘Tookie’ Williams has been condemned to die on December 13th by the State of California. Several celebrities such as Jamie Foxx and Snoop have rallied to ask the Governator to spare his life. Tookie was convicted of killing 4 people during 2 robberies in 1979. Since then he has denounced his former lifestyle and worked to prevent kids all over the world from falling victim to gang violence. He has even been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. It’s all in the hands of the Governor now and protests and petitions may be too little too late, but for what it’s worth we here at Nah Right say, Save Tookie!

Jay-Z ft. B.G. and Chyna White

Sunday, November 20th, 2005

New Jay-Z featuring B.G. and Chyna White. I have no idea how Jay ends up on these collabos sometimes. Luckily Jay’s verse is first, because there’s nothing spectacular about the other two. Although I gotta say Chyna White is looking kinda right.

A Day With Your Favorite Rapper: Priceless

When I heard that Houston rapper Chamillionaire was auctioning off a day of his time on Ebay, I thought well that’s not a bad little publicity stunt. I mean, I can think of worst ways to generate a buzz for your album.  Well, who knew that besides the publicity, Cham (or his label) is gonna walk away with a nice little chunk of change. The winning bid was for $6300.00. Wow. Chamillionaire fans must be pretty serious about their boy.

I’m a huge Jay-Z fan, I could probably be considered a Stan, but I don’t think I could ever spend the price of a small Japanese car for the chance to eat lunch with him. And I’m not hating either, ‘cuz although I’m a biased NY Hip Hop snob, I actually like Chamillionaire. His word play is dope and he displays a level of lyrical skill not typically seen in Houston rappers. But 6300! Let’s be realistic dog, you coulda bought the album and a concert ticket and saved yourself about $6250.

46 days for DMX

Friday, November 18th, 2005

DMX arriving late to court? Well, I don’t think any of us saw this coming. Knowing what a level headed, punctual, upstanding member of the community DMX is, I was shocked to hear that he was late to his sentencing yesterday, sent to Rikers for the night, and hit with 10 extra days in addtion to the 60 he was supposed to get.

Crazy right? Yeah I know. So now, provided he can behave himself, he will be spending the next 46 days in the care of the NY Corrections Dept. This judge obviously doesn’t like hip hop because she refused to accept X’s perfectly reasonable excuse for showing up 3 hours late to her courtroom: He’d had an asthma attack. Of course he did. He’s a busy entertainer who’s under alot of stress, so why wouldn’t he get an asthma attack at precisely the time he was supposed to be in court? Damn system, always trying to keep a brutha down.

Cam ain’t talking

snitch2.jpg

It’s funny how the police and the media can’t fathom how Cam wouldn’t cooperate in the investigation of his shooting last month in D.C. Come on people this is Killa we’re talking about here, you know damn well that man can’t talk to the hop out boys. A couple of writers at The Washington Post seem to understand:

Snitch? Never. He’d lose all street cred. His rivals would pounce, his CD sales would crash, his cologne and liquor sales would dry up, the game would be over.

It’s a tough argument that’s been getting alot of press this year because of all of the Stop Snitching shirts and DVD’s, but in the hood there really isn’t any argument. Not snitching is like breathing, it’s a reflex and its really not up for discussion. And most of the time, if you like breathing, you’ll abide by the unwritten rules. I like to think that the part of my life where I’d be in a situation where I’d be asked to snitch or I might be snitched on is over. Then again Cam probably thought so too. The truth is you never know when you might end up on either end of an investigation and what choices you’ll have to make.

Just out of curiosity, let’s have a little survey. Please leave your answers in the comments:

Snitching, is it ever ok?

Diddy on Hot97

diddy1.jpg

Diddy was just up at Hot 97 with Angie to offer his rebuttal to the LOX allegations. I understand he brought some paperwork with him, being the paperwork gangster that he is. I haven’t listened to any of it yet ‘cuz I’m still at work, and I may not hear it for a while ‘cuz I’m off tomorrow and I feel like drinking beer. I’ll update this post later with my usual witty insight.

First of all let me just say that for any of us to sit here and try to speculate on who’s right and who’s wrong in this whole situation is a pointless exercise. Unless you’re an entertainment lawyer or you truly understand how publishing works, and have seen all of the legal documents related to the argument, you’re just wasting your breath. That said, lets look at the facts:

  • Puff has had disputes with artists about publishing and proper payment before, this is not the first time.
  • Although he brought a contract with him that states the split is 80-20, when the LOX sent over a contract stating 50-50, he didn’t want to talk about it. All of a sudden, its between him and them.
  • Why does Ms. Wallace, who has been quoted saying that she does not approve of Puff’s business practices, all of a $udden have his back?

Ok, so that last one wasn’t a fact, but you get see what I’m getting at. I’ll admit I’m biased towards the LOX in this dispute, but at the end of the day, if it turns out they were wrong, I’d be the first to admit it. But Puff is trying to paint this picture of them like they are so ignorant to the ways of the industry and he’s just an innocent bystander in this who is being dragged into a publicity stunt against his will. I don’t even see how this would benefit them as a stunt.

"Oh, let’s go on the radio and bitch about how we got jerked for our publishing by Puff. Then when he pulls out the paperwork, let’s draw up a fake contract to counter his." Sorry, I just don’t see how they win from doing that. None of this is going to get Styles album in stores or get them off the blacklist at Interscope, so let’s just relax with all the conspiracy theories.
