Judge to LAPD: Ante Up

Saturday, July 9th, 2005

The LAPD has been ordered to pay the Wallace family’s legal fees:

From the AP: Payment Ordered For B.I.G Family

A federal judge has ordered the city and police department to pay slain rap star Notorious B.I.G.’s family "fees and costs incurred as a result of defendants’ misconduct" in the family’s wrongful death lawsuit.

U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper declared a mistrial in the case, rejecting the city’s argument that LAPD Detective Steven Katz had forgotten about documents in his desk drawer until his office was searched last month.

The documents detail Katz’s investigation of a prison informant’s claim that corrupt former LAPD officers Rafael Perez and David Mack were involved in the 1997 killing of the chart-topping New York rapper, whose real name was Christopher Wallace. Cooper said the LAPD still has not turned over other files to the plaintiffs, including about 15 personnel complaint investigations into Mack.

"The detective, acting alone or in concert with others, made a decision to conceal from the plaintiffs in this case information which could have supported their contention that David Mack was responsible for the Wallace murder," Cooper wrote in an order released Thursday affirming the family’s request for a mistrial and sanctions.

Attorney Perry Sanders Jr. said the family would refile the suit, but he didn’t know when. It is expected to accuse the LAPD of racketeering and to name Perez as a defendant.

Cam arrested in Harlem

Thursday, July 7th, 2005

 Blue_Lambo.jpg

Cam got locked up today for driving around Harlem in his crispy Blue Lambo with a suspended license.  Whenever something happens with Cam it’s kinda like, "Damn, I’m surprised this is only just now happening." This dude just screams out "Lock me Up!"

From Allhiphop:

Diplomat Records CEO Cam’ron was arrested today [July 7th] around 2:45 pm for allegedly driving his blue Lamborghini with a suspended license.

According to an unidentified police official, Cam’ron, real name is Cameron Giles, was stopped at the intersection of 110th and Lennox in the Italian sport car during a routine stop, when police discovered his license was suspended.

No bond was set at press time, but the unidentified police official said the rapper would be released without bond once he sees a judge.

Earlier, Cam appeared on BET’s 106 & Park and spoke highly of the vehicle.

"I bought the Lamborghini especially for New York," Cam’ron told the 106 & Park audience. “Because we figure that we can only see stuff like this in Miami, but I am bringing it to the streets of New York."

In related news the Dipset is gearing up for the release of their mixtape "More Than Music" with Duke Da God, due out on July 12th.

Cam’ron’s is also preparing his debut album on Asylum, which is due out later this year.

Biggie Trial Update # 4 - Case ends in mistrial

Thursday, July 7th, 2005

 Big-Awards.jpeg

The Biggie wrongful death trial ended Wednesday when the Judge declared a mistrial. The cause of the mistrial was the LAPD knowingly witholding evidence that incriminated corrupt ex-cops Rafael Perez and David Mack. An anonymous tip made the court aware of the evidence and the trial was put on hold pending further investigation. The LAPD then claimed that it had simply ‘forgot’ to make the Wallace Family’s lawyers aware of the recorded testimony of Jailhouse informant Kenny Bogani. The Judge didn’t buy that story and declared the mistrial. So now this means they have to start everything all over again, from scratch. The good news is the Wallace family plans on re-filing and expanding the lawsuit to include Perez and others and their lawyer vowed to dig even deeper into what really happened with the Rampart Scandal and how it connected to Big’s murder. You’ve gotta feel bad for Big’s moms though, after going through all that, just to have to sit though it again must be hard as hell.

New Mase Freestyle - Murder’s Back

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

Fuckin Mase. This guy’s a clown. First he quits rap to devote his life to the church. Then he renigs and comes back on some goodie good, no cursin, positive rap shit. Now he’s gona full circle with this freestyle called ‘Murders’s Back’, where he takes shots at Jimmy Jones, says the word ‘niggas’ about five times, and loses what little bit of respect I had left for him. Oh and Mase, that’s not your Murder flow, when I hear you spitting some real, pre-Bad Boy murder shit I’ll let you know.

Biggie Trial Update # 3

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

big2.jpg

So there may be a mistrial declared in the Biggie trial because the dirty pigs LAPD hid evidence that connected two corrupt cops to Big’s murder. The judge in the case is pissed and had this to say:

"The notion that Katz forgot about the file is incredible to the court. It defies credulity. I do not believe it"

This could be good or bad for the Wallace family. The judge is expected to make a decision by tomorrow about how the trial will proceed. She can either decalre a mistrial or give a default judgement to Biggie’s family. Either way the LAPD’s credibility is seriously damaged and if a mistrial is declared and they have to go through this all over, their chances of winning lool pretty slim.

Cope’s Time Ad- Fuck Peter Vallone

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

 Cope_Time.jpg

I don’t want anybody to think I’m late on this, cuz I knew about it way back in the beginning of June when Cope started it, but I was waiting for him to finish before I posted it here. In case you didn’t know, Time Magazine hired NY graf legend Cope(2) to bomb a billboard at the corner of Wooster and Houston streets downtown over a period of four weeks. What’s going on here is Time is trying to look cool and ‘down’ by using graf in it’s advertisements even though as SOHH reported today, they weren’t as graf friendly back in the 60’s when it started to really pop off.

So anyway Cope and a few of his boys from K.D., and some other graf vets like JA, SKUF, and TKID bombed the billboard with throw ups and tags, pretty much how they would do on any other wall in the city. Then this fuck face City Councilman, Peter Vallone had this to say about the project:

"Time magazine should have spent its money rewarding legitimate artists, not some punk who’s been defacing our city"

But what fuck face doesn’t understand is that Cope is a real artist and that the shit he does is just as good as, if not better than, most of the shit hanging in dusty ass fucking museums all over the city where nobody can see it. And what does he think people of my generation and kids today would rather look at, a wall full of dope graf, or some shitty painting from 400 years ago by some European dudes we’ve never heard of?

The good news is, graf writers don’t usually take this kinda shit laying down, and Bucky Turco who publishes Animal magazine is encouraging writers to call Vallone’s office and demand an apology. Well a bunch of writers did call his office, but not just asking for an apology, they’re also threatening to start writing Vallone’s name all over the city if they don’t get one. As much as I’d like to go out and participate, I’m pretty much retired from the graf scene (for now)so I’ll let  this post be my contribution.

Fuck you Vallone, your the fucking punk ass bitch!

Lil Kim gets year in prison, $50,000 fine

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

lilkim_sentence.jpg

Lil Kim was sentenced to 1 year and one day in federal prison, and hit with a $50,000 fine today by Federal Judge Gerald Lynch. The one year sentence is way better than the 20 year maximum she could have been hit with, or even the 3 years that the D.A. was asking for.

From the Associated Press:

U.S. District Judge Gerard Lynch said he had considered the public perception of sending a young black entertainer to prison far longer than Martha Stewart, who spent five months in prison and remains under house arrest.

While many rappers have served time in prison, Lil’ Kim, who was convicted in March, is the first big-name female artist to do so.

They just had to throw in that "many rappers have served time in prison" part right. Nah right.

Justo Memorial Mural

Friday, July 1st, 2005

Not to many people know, but Kay Slay used to be pretty large in the Grafitti world back when he was know as Dez. As a matter of fact you can see footage of a young Kay talking about bombing trains and freestyling in the classic Graf documentary Style Wars. Well recently Kay returned to his roots to paint this R.I.P. Memorial mural in Harlem for Justo Faison, the founder of the Mixtape Awards who died earlier this year in a car accident in Virginia. I don’t think Kay did this whole mural himself, but I can’t make out the other two names in the piece. Even still, it looks like he’s still got some skills with a can after all these years.
