Kendrick Lamar & ScHoolBoy Q Visit Rams Camp

Thursday, August 4th, 2016

One of the benefits of being based in a major media market like Los Angeles rather than an mid-west industrial city like St. Louis is that a bunch of celebrities either already call the city home or will inevitably pass through at some point. Native sons Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolBoy Q stopped by Rams training camp this week to meet with the team and have some fun tossing the ball around. Continue below to check out a clip of Kendrick playing WR1 to Quarterback Q.

Wednesday, June 8th, 2016

Yesterday in New York, DJ Khaled, Jay Z and Future shot the video for their still unreleased but highly anticipated new single “I Got The Keys” at the Queens Detention Facility. A number of artists including 2 Chainz, Pusha T, Swizz Beatz, T.I., Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes, A$AP Ferg, Yo Gotti and Fabolous were on hand to make cameo appearances, and several attendees posted shots from the set to their Instagram accounts last night. I’m trying to remember the last time Jay showed up for a video that wasn’t his, but now that Khaled is officially a Roc representer, I guess anything is possible.

Continue below to check out several shots and stay tuned for the the movie that is going to be “I Got The Keys.”

Kanye, KiD CuDI, Mike Dean & Plain Pat in the Studio (PIC)

Last week, Kanye made headlines with a couple of tweets that suggested his next album will be arriving far sooner than anybody may have guessed. First he announced that he was planning on dropping a new album this coming Summer. Then, a couple of days later, he revealed that the title to this new project would be Turbo Grafx 16, which if you’re too young to remember, was a gaming system released in the late 80’s.

While I wouldn’t put it past Ye to drop another album before the year is out, it’s my opinion that the chances of it actually keeping that title and arriving by this Summer are slim to none. In any event, Ye is already back in the studio with some of his most valued collaborators and advisors, as his right hand man Ibn jasper tweeted out the above picture of a studio session with KiD CuDi, Plain Pat and Mike Dean last night with the caption “TURBO GRAFX 16 day 1.”

As I’m sure you know, New York Hip-Hop fans celebrated the life and legacy of A$AP Mob co-founder Steven “YAMS” Rodriguez at Terminal 5 this past Monday night (January 18). Guest performers included Joey Bada$$, Bodega BAMZ, Action Bronson & Alchemist, Flatbush Zombies, RetcH and Da$H and pretty much every rapper you love from the Tri-State Area and beyond. By all accounts it was an evening marked by universal love for YAMS from fans and peers alike. The good folks over at Top Shelf Premium reached out to share some exclusive behind the scenes photos from the evening shot by photographer Mark Edward.

Check out the gallery below and go here to watch video from the show.

Here’s a Pic of Lil Wayne, Birdman & Drake Together on NYE

Friday, January 1st, 2016

Despite the ongoing legal disputes, assassination attempts and overall bad blood between Lil Wayne and Birdman, the two partied within very close proximity of each other at Drake’s New Year’s Eve party at E11even in Miami last night. Birdman had previously noted that he runs into Wayne all the time at that they remain cordial to each other and these pics from Mack Maine and Drake’s Instagram account seem to bear that out.

Birdman has repeatedly asserted that regardless of what happens with Wayne’s lawsuit against him, Drake will remain legally attached to the Cash Money. On a related note, during Drizzy’s performance, he told the crowd that Views From the Six would be coming “very soon.”

NahRight x UpNorthTrips Present: Memory Lane, a Digital Museum of Mobb Deep’s The Infamous

Friday, April 24th, 2015

Memory-Lane-Banner-The-Infamous

Words by Paul Meara (@PaulMeara) with additional reporting from Evan Auerbach (@UpNorthTrips)

Mobb Deep were legends far before anything they created touched wax. The two met each other in high school when a young Prodigy witnessed his eventual rap partner fighting a kid twice his size in the school yard. Outmatched by size and the fact that his nemesis had a knife, Havoc dipped every swing and eventually won the bout. There was no such thing as Mobb Deep back then. Poetical Prophets didn’t even exist. It was just Albert and Kejuan. At the time, P was perusing a solo career but that quickly changed after meeting Hav. All connections he made and access to free studio time disolved once potential labels found out that any ink-to-contract came with also signing a then unknown lyrical accomplice.

The duo would eventually land on 4th & Broadway in 1992 and release their debut Juvenile Hell album a year later. The project was widely regarded as a flop and Mobb Deep was dropped from their first label later that year. Only 17 at the time, each have admitted in retrospect that their immaturity and work ethic weren’t all the way there when recording their first LP. Luckily, they would have a second chance. That re-up would be The Infamous.

The Mobb’s sophomore effort developed in a manner similar to their own childhood. It was cultivated in the cramped confides of Hav’s childhood home in building 41-15 and later brought to the studio for further development. Q-Tip, who originally helped Mobb Deep obtain their first deal with the Def Jam offshoot label, would become one of The Infamous’ masterminds. Every scratchy sample spawned by Havoc’s MPC 16 and every cold-blooded verse from Prodigy’s barbarous delivery was amplified by the A Tribe Called Quest producer. He, along with the Mobb, put together one of the darkest albums the genre has ever seen and arguably the best sonic representation of the place they called home.

The Infamous was released on April 25, 1995 but it was a body of work that represented the short lived triumphs and struggles Mobb Deep had faced since officially joining forces in 1991. It was the cultivation of learned lessons both musically and in life during the four years previous. The album represented the transition from a written off, immature duo to the makings of what would become one of hip-hop music’s preeminent groups. NahRight recently spoke to numerous key players involved in crafting The Infamous, including P and Hav. To best understand the album, where it came from and the people who made it what it was, we also gathered photos and key audio to accompany stories about its formation and lasting impact. Or a trip down “Memory Lane,” as Nas would put it.

PICS: Nicki Minaj, Drake & Lil Wayne Shoot the “Only” Video

Nicki, Drake and Wayne recently got together to shoot the official video for “Only”. I don’t see Chris Brown or any Nazi regalia anywhere so I would imagine this clip will be somewhat less controversial than the lyric video.

Video: P. Reign’s Dear America Mixtape/EP Release Party in Toronto

Saturday, October 11th, 2014

We’ve been steady supporting the Scarborough rapper for a few years now, but 2014 officially marked the release of his long-delayed Dear America EP/mixtape, which had suffered a few pushbacks up until its release.

Last week in Toronto, P. Reign/REPS UP held the official release party at Lost & Found in Toronto with Drake DJ’ing and had all of his cohorts in attendance: OB O’Brien, PARTYNEXTDOOR and he even brought out Toronto rap legend Kardinal Offishall.

Congrats to Preme. I’m aggie I had to miss this. These guys know how to fucking live. Check out more flicks below.
