Prodigy of Mobb Deep Has Passed Away

Tuesday, June 20th, 2017

Well folks, we lost a true legend today. Prodigy, original H.N.I.C and co-founder of Mobb Deep has reportedly passed away in Las Vegas at the age of 42. A rap icon since the release of Mobb Deep’s The Infamous, P is responsible for some of the illest verses ever committed to record during the height of New York City’s dominance in the mid-90’s and has influenced more MCs and fans than we could possibly imagine. Prodigy’s bars perfectly captured the essence of the city at its grimiest and will go down in history as some of the best gangster rap ever written, period. P’s cause of death has yet to be announced, but any fan of his knows he put up a valiant fight against sickle-cell anemia for most of his adult life. UPDATE: A statement from P’s publicist has been included below. Apparently, he had been dealing with severe complications from his illness over the last several days.

4:44 confirmed as Jay Z’s New Album

Monday, June 19th, 2017

For a couple of weeks now, fans and the entire media industry have been trying to decipher those mysterious 4:44 ads that started popping up all over major cities and in a mysterious TV spot that aired during the NBA Finals. The commercial featured Mahershala Ali and seemed to indicate that the project was a film with a boxing theme, plus it also credited Danny Glover and Lupita Nyong’o as co-stars.

Now, a new version of the trailer has surfaced that confirms 4:44 as the title of the next Jay Z album and teases a new song called “Adnis,” which as any Jay stan knows, is the name of Jay’s once estranged father Adnis Reeves. The new album will be out June 30th and will be exclusive to TIDAL and Sprint customers, and that sucks for people like me who let their TIDAL subscription lapse.

Watch Obama Induct Jay Z Into the Songwriters Hall of Fame

Friday, June 16th, 2017

Last night, Jay Z made history as the first rapper to ever be inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. He couldn’t attend the ceremony because Bey is almost certainly about to give birth to the couple’s twins, and so Barack Obama recorded a short video introducing the GOAT.

In the video, Obama compares the similar and unlikely paths that the two men traveled to get to where they are today, made a self-deprecating joke about how both of their wives are more popular than them, and declared that he is probably the only POTUS to bump Hov in the Oval Office and probably will be for some time.

For his part, Jay later sent out a #veryrare tweetstorm in which he thanked fans and rattled off an extensive list of MC’s that influenced and inspired him. The list included everybody from Rakim and Big Daddy Kane, to former adversaries such as Cam’ron and Jaz-O, right up to current stars of the new generation like Mac Miller and Playboi Carti. Watch Obama’s speech above and read Jay’s tweets below.

Here is XXL’s 2017 Freshman Class

Tuesday, June 13th, 2017

XXL just revealed their 2017 Freshman Class, and while I like some of these guys, this might be the worst one yet. The 10 rappers selected are as follows: Kyle, Aminé, Ugly God, Playboi Carti, PnB Rock, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, MadeinTYO, Kap G, Kamaiyah and XXXTentacion.

Two predictions: the freestyles these guys are gonna drop for this campaign are gonna be a mess, and there are gonna be a bunch of rightfully disgruntled MC’s who didn’t make this list.

Armed Robbers Hit A$AP Rocky’s House

Wednesday, May 17th, 2017

According to multiple news reports from outlets such as TMZ and ABC, three armed men forced their way into A$AP Rocky’s home in the Beverly Grove section of LA on Tuesday night and made off with 1.5 million in valuables. Rocky was not home at the time, but one of his female relatives was, and the men snatched her up and held her captive as they rummaged around for loot. Despite their haul, they apparently didn’t come well prepared, as they ended up having to leave a safe outside on the sidewalk after unsuccessfully trying to get the woman to open it. The relative was unharmed.

Swizz Beatz Teases New Music with Jay Z

Friday, May 5th, 2017

What are Swizz Beatz and Jay Z up to? A couple of clues point to some new music from the pair being imminent. Yesterday on Instagram, Swizz posted an image of himself and Jay with a couple of captions (“They don’t even know what’s about to happen” and “Album ModeZone”), which would strongly suggest that at least one of them, and possibly both, are at work on a new project.

A couple of days before that Swizz sent out a late night tweet from the studio with a similar message, although it made no mention of who he might be working with, and the Instagram post it linked to has been deleted.

Additionally, Jay Z was just added as headliner to the Austin City Limits festival, which goes down this October. That means Jay will be performing at a minimum of two big festivals this year, not including his own Made In America event, scheduled for August. As we all know, Jay doesn’t usually show his face at too many big events such as this unless he has something to promote, and it’s been an open secret for some months now that he’s been plotting a new album. Whether or not that project is what Swizz is teasing here remains to be seen.

Listen to a Snippet of Lil Wayne’s “Mona Lisa” ft. Kendrick Lamar

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017

Martin Shkreli, pharmaceutical price gouger and full-time troll, has long asserted that he has in his possession a copy of Lil Wayne’s long-delayed album, Tha Carter V. In the past, there have been reports of Shkreli playing music that he claims is from the album on his live streams, and while we don’t know for sure if what he has is Wayne’s album, he certainly has some unreleased Tunechi. This week he played two more tracks from his stash: a collaboration with Kendrick Lamar called “Mona Lisa,” and another song called “The Life of Carter.” I almost hate to encourage this fuck boy by reposting this, but in the interest of public knowledge you can check them out below. Be warned: the sound quality is horrible.

Kendrick Lamar’s New Album is Called DAMN, Here’s the Tracklist

Tuesday, April 11th, 2017

As it turns out, Kendrick Lamar’s new project is not called ALBUM, that title was just a placeholder for the LP’s iTunes pre-order page, as I suspected it might be. Going off a tweet from K.Dot this morning, the tape is called DAMN, will be 14-tracks deep and features appearances from Rihanna and U2. Presumably, that is the final album artwork up top.

Check out the full tracklist below, and look for the album to arrive this Friday.
