Jay Z to Enter the Songwriters Hall of Fame

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017

This morning, the Songwriters Hall of Fame announced their list of 2017 inductees and your boy Shawn Corey Carter will become the first rapper to ever be bestowed with the honor. Jay joins a seriously legendary class of writers that includes Motown founder Berry Gordy, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, Max Martin and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Nile Rogers announced the list of inductees on CBS This Morning, saying about Jay, “It’s massive. He has changed the way that we listen to music. He’s changed the way that we have fun.” Not bad for a guy who doesn’t write.

The ceremony takes place on June 5th in New York City. In other Hov news, he is reportedly launching a new venture capital firm with longtime friend and business partner, Roc Nation exec Jay Brown.

This afternoon, Curren$y teased a new track called “Miami Vice” that features Rick Ross over a production by StreetRunner. He also took the opportunity to announce the title of his next project, The Motion Picture Soundtrack, which he says is due in April. After suggesting he’d be going on hiatus after his 12-month run of releases in 2016, Spitta doesn’t seem to have taken even one single day off. Since January he’s released the Jetlanta EP and just this past weekend he dropped the Jet Life All-Stars compilation. Chance The Rapper Teases New Future Collaboration

Tuesday, February 21st, 2017

Chance The Rapper, who worked with Future on “Smoke Break” for his break-out 2016 Coloring Book mixtape, teased a new collaboration with the Freebandz prez on his Instagram account yesterday. In two short clips, one of which is tagged with DJ Esco’s name, Chance plays a couple of snippets of a track presumably called “My Peak”. It sounds like a winner, but who knows when or where it will drop. According to a fresh rumor that surfaced on Tuesday via HitsDailyDouble, Future actually has another brand new album coming this Friday, just a week after the release of his new self-titled project a few days ago. If that’s true, maybe the record ends up on that? I guess we’ll see soon enough.

Watch the previews below.

Your 2017 Grammys Winners

Sunday, February 12th, 2017

If questionably distributed statues awarded to artists in mind-bogglingly random nomination groups are your thing, well then tonight is your night. As much as I deride the Grammys for being perpetually out of touch and often historically wrong, every now and then do actually get some shit right. As you know, they care very little about most of the Rap categories and so they give the majority of those awards out before the ceremony even starts. That’s how we know that Chance The Rapper, 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne have already won for Best Rap Performance for “No Problems”.

Continue below for a list of winners which we’ll be updating, along with any relevant performance footage as the night progresses.

Jim Jones Signs with Roc Nation

Wednesday, February 8th, 2017

After several fairly obvious teases on social media, the news many were expecting has been confirmed: Jim Jones has signed a deal with Roc Nation. It’s unclear whether or not the Dipset co-founder has signed as an artist to the label/management firm, but if I was going to guess, I’d say it’s probably one of those management deals that the company has been aggressively pursuing with artists over the last couple of years. With this agreement, Capo becomes the most recent artist, including Fat Joe and The LOX, to put aside very public, though long dead, beefs with Jay Z to get money with the Roc boss. I guess, at the end of the day, it’s paper over everything. Did you ever think you would see the day?

UPDATED: Yep, it’s a management deal. Jim offered the following statement to Billboard:

“As you get older you realize that most of your peers are either dead or in jail,” Jones said in a quote provided to Billboard. “The fact that we can move past the BS is a testimony [to] how much we have grown.”
