Watch Jay-Z’s “Moonlight” Video

Last week, Jay-Z released his video for the 4:44 track “Moonlight” and since then it has been hailed as one of, if not the, best visuals from the album so far. The clip is more of a short film than a music video and it features an all-star cast of young Black actors and comedians (Jerrod Carmichael, Issa Rae, Lil Rel Howery, Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Tiffany Haddish and Hannibal Buress) recreating a scene from season 3 of Friends.

This is a fascinating concept when you consider that Friends itself was actually a rip off of seminal Black 90’s sitcom Living Single, repackaged for white audiences and ultimately far more successful than the show it copied. Add to that Jay’s commentary on the song “Moonlight,” framed around the Best Picture debacle at the Oscar’s earlier this year, and there is alot going on here. The video has now been liberated from the TIDAL paywall and is available to watch above.

And here’s a slightly longer cut that includes outtakes.
