Kenrick Lamar Talks Next Album with The NYT Style Magazine

kendrick-t-mag2

Kenrick Lamar is one of three artists (along with Tom Waits and Beck) profiled for a new package in the New York Times Style Magazine and during his brief interview with writer Wyatt Mason, the notoriously cryptic MC offered a small hint at his headspace as he prepares his new album. Speaking of his connection with fans and preoccupied with thoughts of his family, he offered up the following:

“Been thinking about my little brothers. One little brother, he bigger than me, he’s 22. Another brother, he just turned 11. Family.” Lamar paused, picked it up again. “I think now, how wayward things have gone within the past few months, my focus is ultimately going back to my community and the other communities around the world where they’re doing the groundwork. ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ was addressing the problem. I’m in a space now where I’m not addressing the problem anymore.”

He goes on to say that the new project will be spiritual and “urgent”. And that’s pretty much all we’re getting out of K.Dot, for now. Continue below to watch a small video clip that accompanies the piece (read in full here) in which Kendrick talks about music as self-expression, his love of artists who embrace creativity and why living life is an important part of making art.
