Frank Ocean Interviewed Jay Z for Beats 1

Around noon EST today, Frank Ocean surprised Beats 1 listeners with a curated music show called blonded Radio during which he played a selection of tunes, and much to the surprise of everybody, spoke with Jay Z about the state of music and radio. Jay hardly ever sits for an interview unless he’s promoting something, but what makes this even more unlikely is the fact that his company TIDAL is in direct competition with Apple Music.

In any event, Jay spoke briefly about the influence of advertising on commercial radio, how that model suppresses music that may have made it to radio in the past, and how the industry needs to take advantage of technological advances to improve music discovery.

Jay on commercial radio:

“It’s pretty much an advertisement model,” Jay begins. “You take these pop stations, they’re reaching 18-34 young white females. So they’re playing music based on those tastes. And then they’re taking those numbers and they’re going to advertising agencies and people are paying numbers based on the audience that they have. So these places are not even based on music. Their playlist isn’t based on music.”
