Top Dawg Entertainment only dropped two official albums in 2015, Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly and Jay Rock’s 90059, and they still managed to be the most important label in Hip-Hop. Their plans for 2016 are decidedly more aggressive. Top Dawg himself posted the following image of a tentative release schedule that maps out the label’s plans for the remainder of the year and stokes speculation about one of their most anticipated and elusive projects.
The list does not include dates, only a list of artists that are slated to drop and notes about where they are with their individual projects. ScHoolBoy Q and Ab-Soul seem to be pretty far along (“sample clearance” and “mixing,” respectively) while Isaiah Rashad and SZA are still in the early stages of their albums.
Jay Rock’s name has “ER” next to it, a reference to the unfortunate motorcycle accident he was involved in last month. Next to Kendrick’s name there is an intriguing note to “get Top on the phone,” so I guess we shouldn’t rule out a new Cornrow Kenny project this year, although I’m not holding my breath.
Also intriguing are the notes about new artist “John Doe 1,” who is already recording, and a aspirational entry about a potential Black Hippy project to maybe, possibly arrive in 2017. The note next to that one reads simply: “Pray.”
