Nicki Minaj Just Wants Meek Mill/Drake Beef to Be Over

Nicki Minaj recently agreed to sit for a profile by Vanessa Grigoriadis for the The New York Times Magazine, and during the excruciatingly awkward interview, she directly addressed the beef between her boyfriend Meek Mill and her friend and labelmate Drake.

The profile finds Nicki in New York City for Fashion Week and focuses mainly on her role as a 21st century female pop star and power player in the mostly male dominated world of entertainment. She speaks with conviction about her feud with Miley Cyrus and the root of their back and forth, which famously culminated in a tense exchange at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

After Nicki dismisses a couple of Grigoriadis’ questions as “dumb,” and refuses to confirm minor details for background, the writer raises the question of how she has personally handled the beef between two of the most important people in her life and the multi-million dollar lawsuit Lil Wayne has filed against Birdman and Cash Money.

It was getting dark outside when I asked about Drake, Meek, Wayne and Williams. Minaj hadn’t turned on lights, so she was in shadow. ‘‘They’re men, grown-ass men,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s between them.’’ How does it make you feel, I ask? ‘‘I hate it,’’ she said. ‘‘It doesn’t make me feel good. You don’t ever want to choose sides between people you love. It’s ridiculous. I just want it to be over.’’

‘‘Is there a part of you that thrives on drama, or is it no, just pain and unpleasantness—’’

The room went quiet, but only for an instant.

‘‘That’s disrespectful,’’ Minaj said, drawing herself up in the chair. ‘‘Why would a grown-ass woman thrive off drama?’’

Nicki goes on to eviscerate Grigoriadis for what she perceives as a sexist line of questioning and actually tosses the writer out of her hotel room. I’ve certainly criticized Nicki in the past for what I thought was disproportionately diva-ish behavior in response to perceived slights, but this was an absolutely justified airing out. What a dumb ass question.
