The New Yorker’s Kanye Cover

Kanye’s recent announcement of a potential 2020 presidential bid prompts an illustrated New Yorker cover. The image, by artist Barry Blitt, is inspired by the famous photo of Harry Truman holding a misprinted newspaper cover that read Dewey Beats Truman, a premature and inaccurate headline printed by the Chicago Daily Tribune in the wake of the 1948 election.

Says Blitt about the concept behind the image:

“And when one considers Mr. West, it doesn’t take a whole lot of imagination to be reminded of another scrappy kid who won the Presidency, back in 1948, against all odds. The press wrote him off, too. That’s right—Harry Truman.”
