Kendrick Lamar & Prince Perform Collaboration

UPDATED: This video had disappeared from the web, but a much fresher HD clip has just resurfaced via The Prince Museum. (5/3/16)

Prince just dropped two new albums, Art Official Age and PlectrumElectrum, and the living legend celebrated the release of the two projects with an event in Minneapolis that was live streamed via Yahoo! Kendrick Lamar appeared as a surprise guest and performed the verse you hear above as an addition to the track “Whats’ My Name”, which appeared on the 1998 album Crystal Ball. Here’s to hoping we get to hear the full studio version of this “remix” soon.

UPDATED: Rolling Stone spoke to Hannah Ford, the drummer for Prince’s band 3rdEyeGirl, who said that Kendrick’s performance of this new verse over “What’s My Name” was done somewhat on the fly. Details below.

K.Dot had met with the band prior to the performance, but they rehearsed the verse over the track “PretzelBodyLogic”, not “What’s My Name”:

Mid-performance, Ford says, she and the rest of the band wondered when Lamar would actually join them onstage, especially once a live rendition of “PretzelBodyLogic” came and went without the rapper dropping in. “We performed ‘Pretzel,’ and he didn’t even come onstage,” says Ford. “But Prince called him up on the song ‘What’s My Name’ and he jumped right in like a pro. He just knew how to work on his toes and make the song match up. It vibed really well and we were all really hyped afterward.”
