Us getting more connected and social is a good thing. ( See: Egypt and Tunisia )

    ^
Fb and twitter are NOT being more social and connected. Only On a superficial level.
Before the internets ppl were more social…fb has caused a shift in society where the average teenager growing up now has less close friends than 30 yrs ago.

    ——————————

Bold statement, that I would need statistics to back this up.

But even if it is true ( which I doubt ) and kids have less CLOSE friends it surely has to make up for it with providing children with more ACQUAINTANCES

You can share your closest most intimate desires with a close friend

But one close friend cannot provide you with the varied ideas and lifestyles of 10 acquaintances.

Also just the sheer numbers is formidable in itself.

10 close friends could not have toppled Hosni Moubarak by themselves.

That may be true, but science is BASED on the sharing of information to help and aid others and our society at large

If Einstein and others like him were not motivated to share we wouldn’t have a lot of the great institutions and advancements we have today.

    ^
what was the motivation tho?? To help others? Doubt it, nobody ever mentioned einstein as a particularly charitable man or anything

    ————————–

I agreed being remembered may have played a part.

But is that a bad thing ?

Being remembered for advancing society and making the world a better place for man ?

If MORE people wanted to be remembered for similar things I can only see positives.

I agree with that actually, Social networking sites allow you to connect with more people but mostly its on a shallow level.

You are true in some ways here.

I have ventured into meditation and have found some of the ” content ” you are talking about.

But growing up in a Western society it is tricky to be ” content ”

Our desire to have more and achieve drives us in the capitalist materialistic society.

If you didn’t want to be bigger, stronger, richer, more powerful how good of a CEO would you be ?

I also like fucking bad bitches.

We, the ones who live out in the real world. are truly the ones who should be praised.

We deal with resentment, dissatisfaction and other vices and find a way to push on.

A lot more difficult than a monk who has only one sole purpose or lifestyle.

Any monk would tell you this.

    ^
right I agree with what ur saying here…my point is WHY do we want to be bigger better etc. Y dont we just stop advancing as a race and stick to the way we were originally (cavemen)…are we any happier? What r we searching for? Wen will we b satisfied?
Isnt it better to live the contented life of these monks for example…y do we have this desire to be the best we can? Doesnt it cme down to insecurity nd lack of contentment?

^but arent u sharing your beliefs with others by asking this?????

  9. E aka Mac with the Cheese Says:

social media has negatively affected communication skills but I don’t think I’d argue that it’s had a negative affect on social bonding

existentialists have argued about the lonliness of life since the 19th century

    ^^^^^^^^^

The argument could be made that monks are never truly “content” until they reach the enlightenment that they devote their entire lives, shun family and friends for.

  11. Black Says:

Still tho in this case both CP and Smooth are right IMO. There definitely has to be a self acceptance and confidence that you have to have in yourself or you will constantly seek attention/validation for your beliefs and opinions from others… and be destroyed when inevitably to dont get it at some point.

At the sametime we are social creatures. Its in our nature to group together and want to be a part of something larger than ourselves(frats, gangs, political parties etc..).
