He *could* hamper it the way Drake did, by picking bad singles. How Fancy and Shut It Down got passed over in favour of Over and Find Your Love I’ll never get. Drake should have sold way more but most people I know heard his singles and though he was running out of steam from 2009.

It was a reach but it should pull in some of that whiteboy audience, which you have to assume was the goal all along. I mean, Mac Miller ended up on that StatikFree EP. There must be a method to the madness.

    ——–

See, and that’s one of the contrasts that me and el feces loco were discussing a couple days ago.

I think that Drake thought he could be “all things to all people” – so the odds were against him because everyone KNEW that his music caters to a majority female fanbase – but Drake wanted to seem equal opportunity. So he tried to give a 1st single (“Over”) that was supposed to be his bar-filled song for the rap dudes, then he missed with the 2nd single because it wasn’t soft enough for the broads who needed more singing.

Khalifa-guy on the other hand isn’t faced with these pressures because he’s already covered his field. He and his fans know what to expect AND HONESTLY I think his fanbase will eat up whateverr he dishes.

  107. Eastern_Digital Says:

In 2009 Drake had enough buzz and great singles that this wan’t really a bad prediction.

Then Over came out and it looked like he was fucking things up. He did, and still almost did 500k first week.

Singles change a lot…Kanye had buzz everywhere except for his actual singles. Should have released All of the Lights after Power and Runaway. And did some regular old music videos.

  146. RNC Chairman Michael Steele Says:

But seriously, even better than the way Wiz, Drake, or even Wayne chose to market themselves is the way Eminem and B.o.B., and even that Bruno Mars ass plumber do it.

Market your music to the wrong genre’s fans. B.o.B. sells pop and pop-rock hooks and barely noticeable rapping to rap fans. Hooks like Nothing on You are everywhere on those American Idol style pop singers’ albums, but nowhere in rap. So rap fans who avoided those singers because they weren’t edgy enough can enjoy Nothing on You. Same with pop-rock on Airplanes and Magic. Simple stuff that would get rejeted from a Paramore/Weezer LP, but marketed to rap fans it seems fresh. BoB went from no one to 3 top 10 hits.

Em did the same thing with the pop-rock hooks. But he also had credibility and a huge following. He’s the best selling artist of 2010, and had the biggest song of that year.

Yeah I see where you’re coming from.

But I think rap has always been like that, even if it may have looked like it wasn’t in the 90s. In the 80s everyone knows how simple the lyrics could get. The 90s things got more complex, but honestly, the bars were a bonus but they were never the selling point to most people anyway.

Beats, hooks, and flow have always been what sold records. Lyrics are just a bonus. I don’t think there was a time where it was different from that.
