Curtis – Sunday Morning

Forgive the late pass, considering it is now Sunday night (smh @ the football game being canceled) and not Sunday morning anymore. Peace to all those in NY caught in the snow storm right now.

    Conceptually? Not so much.
    ^
? Illmatic had zero concept. or maybe i’m just misunderstanding your use of the word “concept”. IWW was written had a cohesive streetwise theme throughout, whereas Illmatic was just a bunch of ridiculously dope lyrics strung together over similarly fresh beats. i’m not really seeing what’s so conceptual about that?

  73. 50 Says:

the last samurai made me cry

  74. sealsaa Says:

No concept? It was Nas’ coming of age, as made evident by the album cover. We could both quote NY State of Mind, his verse on Life’s a Bitch, The world is yours, etc. Every song had the same tone, unlike Affirmative Action, Black girl lost, and street dreams.

I’d argue that they both had streetwise themes, albeit from different age perspectives.

I agree with this COMPLETELY. I never understood the revisionist IWW> Illmatic argument.

Lyrically, they were both flawless but IWW tends to have some contradictory themes. (I just never saw how a socially-conscious song like Black Girl Lost fit in with unapologetically gangsta songs like ‘Shootouts’ and ‘Live Nigga Rap’.

Also, I thought IWW coulda been shorter. Shootouts and Nas Is Coming didn’t strengthen the album in any distinctive way. What was said on the 2 songs was said better on others.

    Just my thoughts.

in 1996 IWW marked a distinct seperation, or rather a generational gap within the hiphop community. on one side you had the old-schoolers who preferred the Nas who rhymed over Q-Tip and Large Professor beats. this was the crowd that grew up on Native Tongues and Black Moon and Pete Rock/CL Smooth, etc. on the other hand, there was the new school who preferred Smiff-n-Wessun over Black Moon, and Havoc’s production over Q-Tip’s. hyper lethal/angry criminally charged lyrics were on the verge of totally changing the way the world looked at rap music. Illmatic marked the end of an era of progressive thought and carefree attitudes dominating rap music. IWW, along with other classics such as The Infamous, Ready To Die, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx – not to mention the rise of Badboy/Deathrow/Wu-Tang – all marked a profound change towards darker days in rap in every way imaginable. wow, i have no i idea why i even typed all of this. . .
