I’m not even gonna lie…Jay Elec spits shit that goes a little over my head at times. The biblical and spiritual shit I’m not as up on [ll], the ones I can reference are absolute gems so if I had knowledge of everything he was spitting I bet that shit would be crazy.

But like that track he did for Erykah that was only a verse or so, Ghost of Christopher Wallace and the track with Jay & The Dream are so dope, and mix in perfect with that Style Wars EP. Even more crazy is that new track that has John F. Kennedy talking about going to the moon came on after Eternal Sunshine and it sounded like it was meant to be there.

Nah, he ain’t as pretentious as a Aceyalone or Jeru– wack niggas fronting like they dropping knowledge– and he’s not as weirdly esoteric as an MF Doom.

Jay is more of a Nasir-type– Self educated who, despite their own personal failings, have the ability to make heartfelt music.

His ability to drop a jewel, battle rap, and create meaningful music without the heavy-handedness that is a hallmark of many rappers labeled “underground” or concious” of many of his contemporaries is interesting in-and-of itself, and is part of the reason why I listen to him.

Yea, I mean, until Jay gives us an actual, completed project, I can’t proclaim him to be the “next big thing” <– consistency is key. I think Exhibit C was a product of the Just Blaze production with the fact that Elec hadn't released anything.

Agreed, but I don’t think it changes my point about having a project put together (whether its a mixtape or an album) that someone can point to and say, “Thats his definitive project. This is what you need to listen to, and if you don’t fuck with him after that, then you never will.”

I wonder if J.E was Cole’s age and if people would think he was as overrated as J Cole. I can see very few rappers still making music at 60 and still being nice. JihaD

    ^^^

I think we can all agree that “The Infamous” is easily a classic. I don’t see any drop off between that album and “Hell on Earth.” In fact, some might reasonably argue that Hell is a purer distillation of Mobb’s sound, since Havoc did ALL the production and Prodigy stepped his pen game up a bit. They’re essentially 2 sides of the same coin – like ATLiens and Aquemini. Thus, 5 Mics for both…

Murda Muzik was more of a mainstream/experimental album. They brought in more guests, from different regions and tried all sorts of new shit with brighter samples. Plus, the album is kinda lengthy. So a little filler crept in, but it’s still a potent album and just falls short of classic status for me. Thus, 4.5 mics…

I co-sign that wholeheartedly. But then again, I’m a Gibbs stan.

Gibbs is just as gifted technically and is easily more driven. Gibbs is also capable of making better songs. Jay E is obviously more mercurial, may have more knowledge on all sorts interesting subjects and can produce beats but his lack of product hurts him.

In addition, I’ve never heard a Jay E song that wasn’t designed for headphones – maybe the one song he did with Lil’ Flip. His appeal (not just from a commercial standpoint, but from a rap fan subset view) is rather limited.

    ^

So you know what he has recorded with Just Blaze? Why would he release any more material that might be on that Exhibit A or C level for free? Maybe he’s laying in the cut looking for the right deal. Who knows? Nobody knows really. Puffy knows I guess. Jay-Z knows I guess, he signed him. Maybe there’s a strategy to everything. Maybe Erykah has his mind in another place, instead of rocking girlie clothes maybe the poon has him lazy everyday like it’s Thanksgiving Dinner.

First, overrated is in the eye (or ear in this case) of the beholder. I don’t like either Aubrey or Jermaine, but people do. If Jerz or D Block were here, they would probably be arguing just like a Chick is about them both. Doesn’t mean I would agree, but thats what it is.

Second: the term “hit” <— What are we defining this as? a Billboard/Mainstream "Hit"? Or just a hit song? Universally loved/dope? Because you could say Exhibit C is a hit, even if it wasn't a billboard hit.

He and Jay actually receive similar blog love, and they have the backing of all primarily avante-garde publications. Jay will either continue to make the music he is making now and rely on CamelGOAT to market him to those people who don’t give a fuck about his esoteric, super rapping and make them care (which based on the mainstream acceptance of Cole and his lack of a release date is laughable) or just say “fuck it, we are gonna sell what we gonna sell and not give a fuck.”

True, but Busta, at least earlier, was very lyric driven, at least up til ELE, which is hwy I thought Muddy Waters vs. ELE was the best bet convo wise.

@ Tron- ILC is cornier because its almost 20 years old. But characters like Homie Da Clown, Fire Marshall Bill, Wanda, etc, are classics. And lets not front Like Chappelle didn’t have some stupid skits or wraparounds–> The pop copy skit, Girls Gone Wild: African edition, etc. That nigga wasn’t immune to a wack joke or skit either.
