Gangrene (The Alchemist + Oh No) – Gutter Water Artwork

A couple years back The Alchemist and Stones Throw’s Oh No announced they would be working on their own Jaylib-style hip-hop collab under the name Gangrene. Defying the list of announced hip-hop collabs that never see the light of day, Gangrene has just emerged.

Starting from the album title, there’s no mistaking the style of Gutter Water: drums smothered that go-jump-off-a-bridge, rusty-nail-in-the-eye, nasty toilet bowl rawness, the kind of grimy music both of these producers have spent a decade perfecting.

Gangrene’s debut album drops 11/23 via Decon Records, preorder now.

Why don’t these guys have a category that says “Slow News Day?” You know, for when “Archival Purposes” doesn’t quite do it justice.

Same deal as the Neptunes. Just never really appealed to me. I’ve heard a ton of songs from them both. There are exceptions for both– The neptunes’ jay-z stuff has all been really good, and Timbo’s work on Bubba Sparxxx’s Deliverance was some incredible stuff, but overall I’ve never cared for the majority of their work.

    ^^

I mean, your entitled to your own opinion, but Timothy Mosely, Chad, and Phareal are all responsible for a huge shift in hip-hop music, going away from the sample based sound and using more synths and sparser instumentation. Plus, if you don’t like the songs I put on that Neptunes list above you (at least from an instrumentation standpoint), then their really is no argument to be had.

He misses sometimes IMO, but I think overall he is good & Chad is obviously a great musician.

Not saying their wack, cause I respect what they’ve done. But overall Neptunes and Timbo’s sound just ain’t for me. I like a lot of the beats Neptunes have given The Clipse though.

I mean, all musicians miss every now and again. If anything, its impressive that the Neptunes didn’t fall into that Swizz Beatz zone where they outplayed their sound– somehow, they were able to keep reinventing it despite the oversaturation, yet still keep their signature sounds.Swizz just fell off the face of the earth for a while, then re-appeared with Cassidy like he never left, lol.
