Teams will move to other cities before they even contract a team, trust.

***Stern’s reportedly looking seriously @ contraction as an option, though…I could see him leaning towards overseas expansion first, though….
    ^^^

I’m curious as to why he wants to do this. Will it save him money? Make the league more competitive? What will the criteria be? How do you restructure the conferences, the divisions? Can you even do that? Do you change the playoff format is response to that?

You can look at how the NFL dealt with expansion as a clear way of restructuring the league without losing its history (the division alignments were genius. GENIUS) but I don’t think the NBA has the cojones or the mental capacity to do that…

Contraction will never happen. He is using this threat as a bargaining chip to use for the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Like “fine we wont contract 60 roster spots, but you have to give in on points A and B”

There were those skeptical of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ claim that his team would host the Super Bowl in the new, state-of-the-art Cowboys Stadium, but even the most ardent disbelievers could not have imagined the disaster Dallas’ season has become. After the Cowboys’ 35-17 home loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jones spoke to the media in a state of confusion.

“I’m embarrassed,” Jones said. “Of course I am. And to every fan, I should have and do take the ultimate, ultimate responsibility. I do. That’s the way we’re structured. That’s the way I run it. There’s no question that I have the plan and executing it to have the best players and the best coaching that we can have. I’m dumbfounded that we are 1-7.”

@CiCi- good points…I think that Stern’s ultimate objective has always been to take the game global…not sure what his rhyme or reason is- maybe looking for increased viewership by infiltrating new markets, like the Yao Ming payoff? I think I read somewhere than Ming attracts like 250M viewers, by himself…

  23. Charles Oakley Says:

Cosign the fact Stern wants to take the game global. He knows he can’t beat the nfl in the US, but worldwide NBA is the number 2 sport in the world already, and gaining popularity every year. He will have a Euro Division within a decade.

I think Stern used the expansion into Canada as a litmus test to what the possible international reaction would be. He had one fail and one quite possible semi-fail.

From a logistic standpoint, I don’t think you can make a really big international move. I think you play regular-season games on international soil but move a team? That’s going to be hard.

THe NFL kept all the rivalries intact while balancing the divisions (four teams each, four divisions). Do you remember what the AFC Central used to be? 6 teams! Then the East would have 4? That’s not balanced and that wasn’t fair. Shit is super fair AND the league still maintains those really important matchups, season after season.

***True…plus, a lot of foreign countries have respectable b-ball teams, with a following/fanbase of their own….even a few throwaway NBA hasbeens on the roster…(waves @ AI, Juan Dixon, Antoine Walker, etc)

When Boozer comes back CHI is going to be a problem.

^The bulls are a problem right now without him there. D Rose, is a monster. But add boozer to that mix and then they go from a good regular season/first round exit team, to a great regular season/second round exit team
