Video: Big Boi’s Billboard Tastemakers Piece

Big Boi performs a few songs for Billboard’s “Tastemakers” feature. First he does “Shutter Bug,” and after the jump, he performs “Daddy Fat Sax” and “General Patton.”

They managed to catch up with Big Boi while in New York promoting the album on what he joked was his Grammy hustle. For the latest installment of the Tastemakers video series, he brought along DJ Cutmaster Swift ad he himself threw down a 3-song set of “Left Foot” tunes full of freestyling, whip and lasso his mic cord moves and ad-hoc photo snapping with our neighbors, the cast of MTV’s “The Hills.”

Billboard has more from the encounter with Big Boi & Cutmaster Swift.

If you think Curtis would’ve been anywhere near as big as he was without the cosign of Marshall and Andre, you are clearly mistaken. I have him maxed out at double plat in the most optimistic of appraisals.

In 2002, it was Em, Nelly, Jay-Z, and I Need A Girl rap. He’s not getting those beats without Dre, he wouldn’t have signed to the Roc, and without Em & Dre’s cosign, 2002-era Ja/Irv had enough clout to keep him from working with high profile artists.

Fish grease and whatnot woulda got him a platinum record, same as motherfucking Nappy Roots, Big Tymers, and We Invented The Remix back in ’02.

    ^^
The video in the garage?? Yeah, ok. I just remember Cam putting a nigga in a gorilla suit on the stand, giving him numbchucks, and saying hilarious shit about snitching. The only ill thing Fif said was in reference to drinking after Cam and catching AIDS. That was funny.

    ^^

You talking about the video, I’m talking about the songs… Funeral Music was better than that “I’m in the Lamby Candy/Down In Miami” shit… That nigga Cam VANISHED for a couple of years after the consecutive L’s he caught from 50 and Tru Life…

“Nigga you ain’t got I.B.S, you got A.I.D.S!! Niggas coming round the way lost 40 lbs, talking bout, ” I just took a sip off of Cam’s snapple”- 50 Cent GOAT shit talker>>>>>>

The Clipse were the best hiphop group to drop in the 00s in my opinion. With that said, nothing in Pusha’s catalog at this point has me convinced that he’s ready for a verbal war with Cam. Those dudes are humorless, and humor is usually the deciding factor in these things. And Common, that nigga lost his spark a minute ago. And I’m not mad at him, he dropped enough classics to earn being able to coast. But he dont want it either.

Soooooooo, that being said, who gives a fuck if ‘Ye answers or not. 197. JihaD Says:

    ^^^

Rey… Seriously.. just be quiet. Don’t you LIVE in NY??? I shouldn’t even have to explain to you the type of buzz 50 had BEFORE he got signed. Yea, the Em/Dre cosign was huge, but it wouldn’t have mattered WHERE he signed. His music was already huge. As far as beats, he had, what? 3 Dre beats on his project? The rest were no-name producers…

You can’t possibly be serious. 50’s music blew of the strength of his hooks, the mystique surrounding him (drug dealer, shot, etc), and the buzz he created off the mixtape circuit. Em and Dre were the proverbial icing on the cake…

The mainstream audience 50 needed to be as big as he was was NOT checking for that gun shit back then, man. He needed Em & Dre. Do you remember hip-hop in ’02? Mainstream, commercial hip-hop? They were NOT checking for that.

That buzz means what to the suburban kids rockin’ out to Hot In Herre and Without Me? Anything? Them kids is the ones that bought all them albums, that made 50 an icon–those aggressive content lovin’ rebellion-via-blackface honkeys.

He goes plat, maybe double, but that’s it. And you gotta be fuckin’ kiddin’ me with those 3 dre beats.. Those were the fuckin’ SINGLES! In Da Club, 21 Questions… Sheeit…
