Kanye West Covers XXL (October 2010)

Something noteworthy about Kanye’s October 2010 XXL cover story:

The Louis Vuitton Don penned the cover story on himself—his first article ever—and also served as the creative director of his own 40-page section in the special collector’s issue.

Here are a few quotes from the piece, regarding Taylorgate:

“I stress that the incident wasn’t about Taylor personally,” he explains in the story. “And it definitely wasn’t about race. Where I messed up is, at the end of the day, it’s your show, Taylor. It’s your show, MTV.”

“The relationship with the public and with your fans is like the relationship with your girlfriend,” he adds. “How could I not, at a certain point, be like, ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been at the awards show. I’m sorry.’ Not that I don’t deserve to get beat up or change who I am inside, to make sure that that doesn’t happen again.”

Mr. West said that, following his VMA outburst, he immediately dedicated himself to the studio. “I knew I wasn’t in a great spot publicly after the incident, but I would just block it out and work as hard as possible and let my work be my saving grace,” he shared. “In a way, I had thrown a Molotov cocktail at my own career, and it gave me an opportunity, for the first time, to go away and find out who I was. Because I felt very alone.”

On top of that, the October issue with also feature stories on Kid Cudi, Ye’s G.O.O.D. Music family, Wiz Khalifa (?)and XXL’s top 10 producers-turnt-rappers of all time.

Hitting newsstands nationwide September 28th.

But nah, my point was that this nigga had already built his buzz to the point that people wanted to see what his next move was. Not saying 50 didn’t benefit greatly from signing with Em and Dre, but if he can’t write “In Da Club,” 50 Cent becomes Joe Beast, Brooklyn, or the Game (among others) over at Aftermath, and that is FACT. Hell, D12 couldn’t write “In Da Club,” and they had the beat FIRST!!!

    JihaD

    ^^^

Honestly, there’s no way to determine this. In Da Club was catchy, but over a sped up soul beat or a manny fresh bounce beat, would it have resonated the same? I don’t think so.

My opinion is that Fif goes 1x platinum, 2x at the most, but then that’s it. And the fucked up part is that he might be more respected if it happened that way. The same audience and mentality he helped usher in turned their back on him quick because he wasn’t new and fresh, and he played himself out beefing with everyone.

    ^^

But now your making assumptions, and your assumptions don’t have any actual basis in facts. The fact is is if he didn’t continue making the same music that got him signed, then he NEVER releases a project, ESPECIALLY on Shady/Aftermath (word to Stat Quo). 50 was flat out writing hits for both the mainstream and the hood, and NOBODY was doing that at the time. Shawn just came off that L to Nasir, Nasir was rapping with Little kids, and 50 and the Dips were running NY… this is fact. 50 signing with Em and Cam signing with Dame was supposed to usher in the next era for NY, and for a while it did.

As far as soul samples, etc. NONE of the singles for GRODT sound similar– PIMP, 21 Questions, Wanksta, or Many Men, and that played into the strength of the artist. Honestly, would you care about In Da Club if it didn’t say “produced by Dr. Dre?” That wasn’t even his best single…

    JihaD

    ^^^

Dude, you’re making assumptions as well. You’re ASSUMING he’d have been just as popular or whatever w/o Em and Dre. I don’t know if you think I’m blowing Marshall and Andre (no homo) and giving ALL of Curtis’ success to them and them only—-I don’t feel that way at all—-but he doesn’t become a 6x platinum artist without them. It’s just not happening.

Cam had the same momentum and “only” went platinum.

Also, In Da Club might not be his “best” single (I think it was) but it was CLEARLY the most popular, and that’s what the mainstream single is supposed to do–get you over with the public.

As for writing hits for the hood and the ‘burbs, that’s just taking the “something for everyone” motif that had been in place since Life After Death. Maybe nobody was doing it at the time, but dude didn’t reinvent the wheel.

So, again, without Em and Dre, that cosign and those beats, under different production with a different machine backing him, 50 goes 1x-2x platinum and then fades away, away, awayyyyy

True… This is when that subliminal shit works. cuz most the kids listening at those shows probably have no idea what that means, but sub subconsciously they will never buy a track about in the air. LOL

    ^^^

XXL was decent for a long time, but the proliferation of 50 Cent covers and then Lil’ Wayne stories, plus the fact that the interviews/information in the magazine was ancient with the rise of blogs, kiiinda makes it obsolete. The fact that ‘Ye is doing his own article is intriguing, but overall, the Spin/Rolling Stone/NYT/or NYM features are much more interesting/in depth.. Even the Playboy or Complex interviews are more insightful. Still… Gonna cop!
