J Cole spazzed on a few Nah niggas with that old bitter ass, middle class verse. I totally agree with him, niggas just be hating to hate. If you don’t like that villematic, your credibility is shot. Cole bodied Ye on that joint.

^As a ‘Ye stan (Daps Seth), yes indeed, Cole killed it. If anyone could do a better job than Cole on that beat, It’ll probably be Jay Elect. Maybe.

I did, but I never really liked coles verse, cuz honestly, he wasn’t saying shit. Jays verse about riding around nyc and trying to make it big in music was far more potent for anyone dreaming about success. in that sense, his verse was on topic, topical, and will always remain relevant, while coles will not. not say that either was wack, but /i definitely felt jays verse more.

I understand the apparent desire for J. Cole to fail around here. Dude’s got great songs in his catalogue:

    Can I Live

    Grown Simba
    Welcome
    Lights Please

The Warm Up is better than any CD to come out this year IMO.

Actually, my critique about cole was a general opinion, not about villematic.I don’t look for freestyles over other peoples songs to validate my likes or dislikes about an artists music, but after listening to warm up and al the leaked songs from cole, I am simply not a fan (for the reasons I described previously). I don’t think he’s wack, but just not interesting (to Me). We already had this discussion I think, but its whatever.

Regradless of Jay Elects faults (and there are many), we at least KNOW he cares about the material he releases to to the public, and wants to ensure its quality. In many ways, you can’t fault him for that. To say he his verse on Just Begun, or the Curren$y joint, or Ghost of Christopher Wallace wasn’t dope is not telling the truth, however.

I’m going to have to agree with Jihad on this one. Jay’s verse on Just Begun was on some visual, creeping on a come up type shit. While Cole’s verse was definite fire, I’m mean damn, the man said “I am on another level, I’m on top of nose bleeds”. Shit was fire. It just didn’t add up to any type of subject matter. Both had dope ass verses, but, Elect seemed to have a more steady hand in citing what he wanted to say.

Yeah, I agree to a degree. Sort of like Nas, albeit nowhere near as skilled (then again, who is?). J. Cole definitely has made some very dope songs, which is more than I can say for a lot of the rapper’s receiving posts on this site. However, it’s questionable to me whether or not he can hold my attention for an entire 12-15 song album/mixtape.

@ Landlord, I definitely see the comparison, but Jermaine sounds like he bought that “hip-hop dictionary” from borders and began his career. As an MC, he is technically profiencent, but has little to no artistic creativity. ^ As I just mentioned, it aint WHAT he’s sayin’. He’s just not interesting to me. He could be rappin’ about my life as if he watched from outside my window, but it’s nothin’ about his voice or flow that’s redeemable enough for me to wanna listen. In the industry it’s called the “it” factor. For instance, everybody wanna say that it was beat for Exhibit C that made it hot, but yet nobody of the new school that isn’t signed to a major could duplicate that kinda frenzy. I FELT was JayElec was sayin’… the way he documented his personal spiritual bout was astounding to me. Regardless of his reluctance to drop music, he just has an overwhelming aura of great magnitude. I watched him open up for Mos Def and the whole crowd knew all his material and basically had ’em in the palm of his hands. Like if he gets his shit together I can honestly see him taking Def and Nas’ place if he REALLY wants it. I just don’t get that feeling with Cole. Like I said, he’s a good technical MC with good content, but I lump him in with the 5093459 MC’s that I met in college. I wish him the best.

^Not trying to be funny, but Cole could use some pointers from Wiz on developing and OWNING his style. People might not like Wiz because of his subject matter, voice, or other factors, but he raps with conviction, cadence, and just makes some overall good music. I had a pseudo argument on Twitter yesterday with someone about this and it’s really hard to explain unless you’ve been a fan from jump. He could easily be the 16-bar assassin (for the people that’s sleeping) but it’s just NOT his lane. I’d rather artists stay in their lane until their convincing enough to do other things and Wiz certainly has mastered that. Drake aint invite him on tour for nothin’.

^ I think it was actually 2 other people on Twitter (who might be Nahggers as well) who cosigned the George Kush tape so I FINALLY gave him a listen. For the longest I just ignored him because of that damn moniker, “Dza”. I’m thinkin’, is this dude really jackin’ the Wu on some Rza/Gza shit? I didn’t really understand it. But after I finally broke down and gave it a listen I was highly impressed. Now I don’t go a day without listening to George Kush and checkin’ out some of his videos that he released prior to that tape. I know pretty much the whole tape damn near word for word now.

I also started checkin’ out Dom Kennedy (somebody else I avoided) on the strength of him having a verse on George Kush. His website got some videos and I think he’s dope too.

While I’m doing more 6 degrees of separation type of comparisons here, I also heard/seen this freestyle that Kennedy and Curt@!ns (another MC I avoided because of his name) did called “Sports Cars” over a Raekwon track and I think he can spit too.

^ That’s a crock of shit considering that the most popular rappers are trap rappers talkin’ about how much coke they sold to the community and the countless bodies caught over it. Not that I have anything against trap music (if it’s good), but I hardly believe kids are pickin’ up a weed habit because of Wiz and Spitta. People BEEN gettin’ high. Wiz and Spitta just happen to document it with slick rhymes and nice beats.

I couldn’t agree more. It’s crazy because Wiz was doing so well independently, I mean he was on Rock the Bells, his videos were getting play. Nigga was making money and wasn’t compromising his art.

Now he’s probably making more money but he’s compromising his art, I don’t know if that makes sense to them but it doesn’t to me.

I seen that Dame video, and I kind of agree with Dame that they don’t need big labels but at same time, I feel like you can do so much more with a big label by your side. At the end of the day shit comes down to money, I’m pretty sure we all realize that. So I mean to get MAXIMUM exposure you kind of have to rely on big labels to have your shit sell platinum in China and do shows in Africa and Australia and shit like that.

I don’t think there’s any artist right now doing MAJOR things while still being on a smaller label…

^ I agree that doing major things on an indie label is probably a hard feat. It just depends on how much leverage you can get in a deal. That was the benefit of having someone like a Dame Dash in your corner during the Roc days because they were the first (as far as I know on the East Coast) to do joint venture deals. As oppose to J. Prince’s Rap-A-Lot Records that was an indie label, BUT they had more support from the community in those areas, i.e. Mom & Pop stores, etc. They was literally doing Wiz numbers out of their trunk and ultimately became rich (Mike Jones, Slim Thugga, Scarface, Pimp C, Bun B, etc). So hopefully he got some leverage in his deal.
