smh@niggas acting like Ross’ beat selection is a crutch…this is why I hate discussing rap on the internets, the ability to select the right beats is a TALENT…if you don’t know what beats you sound good over, you’re damn near worthless as an artist (except for Nas).

The haters are just as delusional as Rozay.

And get used to Ricky Rozay. If the real Rick Ross wins that lawsuit, that name is gonna stick.

^ (c) rappers who couldn’t transition from the 90’s era.

Picking beats is an art. Craftsmanship. If you try to paint a portrait with the wrong hues, colors, etc. the interpretation and overall painting will be useless. For example, there’s no way in hell Jay-Z could’ve used those same beats from AA EP because that’s not his style. Or imagine Ross rappin’ over “Thank You” or “Venus vs. Mars”.

  18. the real truth Says:

Rick Ross Makes Good Music, Say what you want about him but hes making better music than your favorite artists. all these C.O and hes a liar arguments are pointless because we love a music industry thats been lying to their fans since day 1. Even if you dont like Rawse’s personality or the fact he passes Khaled the mic, you can respect him for being on his grind.

Its not even entertaining to me, its simply grating to my sensabilities, and honestly, I just can’t relate to it.

    ^

sure, i understand. i mean most of us here grew up on Wu and all that. but I separate Ross from that type of shit.

Im beyond jaded with the state of (mainstream) hip hop right now so I suppose I stopped looking to the art form to really speak to some real shit. ross is just party music, great beats, ill flow, clever/hilarious bars….and he has his moments of real talk rap, but overall that’s not what he’s here to do. he IS a cartoon, this is fantasy…it’s a movie. and i think a lot of people aren’t willing to accept that fact. once you accept it the music is incredibly entertaining

why can’t he just be that and be entertaining without having to be stacked up against cats like Wu who had a completely different agenda?

but i see where you coming from tho.

you can’t compare movies/actors with music/artists. Actors are playing a role, and when that movie has been created, go back to being them. Al Pacino doesn’t live his life attempting to be Tony Montana or Micheal Corleone. William continues trying to convince people that he is really a major Cocaine Dealer in Miami– I mean, he never turns it off, never stops playing that role. Can anyone seriously point to an actual Interview or song where William speaks, and not Rick Ross?

    JihaD

  27. D. Billz Says:

Rapping isn’t just about entendres and bar-flippin’ either. It’s about knowing yourself. I’ve heard rappers with some of the greatest voices waste it incessantly because they don’t know their own style. People often say, “if I can do the same thing Rapper A is doing then it’s not impressive”, when in reality you CAN’T do what Rapper A is doing. Your voice is probably awkward, your flow probably inconsistent, and other things that would probably hinder you as an artist. Gotta know when to use the highs and lows, when to pause, breath control, doubling up, ad-libs, etc. Ross got ALL of those under control.

  28. 007 Says:

why can’t he just be that and be entertaining without having to be stacked up against cats like Wu who had a completely different agenda?

^ But what was their agenda? “Wu tang is for da kids” What did that really mean tho? On some real shit?

  29. syntax Says:

Delivery =/= lyrics, and it never has. You can have a great delivery with shitty lyrics, and you can have great lyrics with a shitty delivery- The greats are/were able to combine both. they could rap over ANYTHING, utilizing many different flows and deliveries without sacrificing their lyrics. William CANNOT do that, as he falls into the “one flow” category with Jason, David, etc. Chris proved he was capable of adapting his delivery to any track with sacrificing his ability to put clever words together.

We shouldn’t have to lower our standards as a culture.

^Lower WHAT standards exactly? You act like coke rap is the only variety of music available. All these people complain, yet ALL these people don’t buy their favorite lyricist’s album either. Don’t be mad at the artists, be mad at the fans who don’t support who they SAY they like.
    ^^

As far as realness and representing something. That’s what made the “golden era”. The fact that most of the artists (even the gangsta ones) was about something. Like the Clan or Ice Cube or Pac or Biggie… they all had deeper messages embedded in even their most ignorant lyrics.

Ross does not. And again I don’t hate Ross. And don’t get me wrong I still buy albums almost every week. Either new stuff or old shit I didn’t have.

I think if Ross was just a little more conceptual I would forgive any of that fake gangsta shit. That’s me though.

^wrong. ross has lyricism and versatile flow i just wouldnt put it at biggie level just yet. but his voice commands attention and he sells his words like nobody in rap right now. when he drops in the club, you are listening. krs, biggie, chuck, pac all had this quality. so does rick. to deny this is to be blind in both ears.

^That’s an era where everyone catered to the TREND of having a message, not the STANDARD. That’s number 1. Number 2, we live in an era (as I just stated) where there are TONS of rappers out there that’s available to you (via internet) so you don’t have to be subjected to just coke lyrics if that’s not your thing. Furthermore, I’d challenge the idea that Ross doesn’t have any substance if you ever heard any tracks prior to POM (they were posted on here a while ago). The industry has changed and you have to fit the mold if you wanna survive. Ross is playing it smart and giving the public what they want NOW, but I bet he’ll have some more introspective raps on some albums/mixtapes down the the line.

This is 2010. Nobody wants to hear a “Juicy” from a fat darkskin dude right out the gate. He would’ve been shelved or dropped damn near immediately. You have to play the game to cater the current crowd first THEN do the stuff you really wanna do. Yall need to read up on the industry articles more. It REALLY is deeper than rap.

“Now I’m over at Capitol Records and got a great roster over at Capitol,” Davis said in an interview. “[We] got Snoop Dogg over there, got Anita Baker over there, Al Green over there, got LeToya Luckett over there, got Bobby Valentino over there. A really, really great roster there, Raekwon [too.] We just signed a 50 Cent deal over there….50 thought he needed to get out of the Interscope, he wanted to do a new change so he got his release from there, we were in negotiations with him and the deal just got signed very recently. And now we got 50 Cent on the label, I think we’ll probably have Lloyd Banks cut in his first cut and then 50’s gonna come out later on.” (Pyramid TV)

^No disrespect, but the West Coast is weird ass place for any rap fan. I don’t know what the fuck yall listen to out there. When I was out there in ’04 listening to the radio it was all pop music and a few outdated East Coast tracks.

50 cent just signed to Capitol REcords

G-Unit leader 50 Cent has reportedly signed a deal with Capitol Records, however, terms of the contract have not been disclosed.

According to Capitol/EMI Vice President of Urban Promotions Craig Davis, 50 has joined the team of rap stars on the label.

And now we got 50 Cent on the label, I think we’ll probably have Lloyd Banks cut in his first cut and then 50’s gonna come out later on.” (Pyramid TV)

don’t know what to make of this signing until further details are available….could be shrewd on Curtis part, or he may haven’t gotten many major suitors
