M.I.A. on Nas, Jay-Z & Kanye West

mia-complex-cover-nahright

Complex quizzed their June/July cover girl M.I.A. about her thoughts on the current state of the rap game. What she had to say about Nas in regards to how Jay-Z is living is pretty interesting.

What do you like about hip-hop today?
M.I.A.: I think Kanye is trying to take it into a new realm and he’s sort of putting the artistry back into it and sort of taking it in that direction. I was having a conversation about Jay-Z and Nas and how it was really crazy how they were having this Nas vs. Jay-Z moment 10 years ago and no one really talks about it now.

You clearly haven’t been to complex.com!
M.I.A.: Jay became the biggest representation of rap music who’s still alive, started dating Beyoncé—everything was so much bigger and better with Jay-Z. I hope people don’t think that that wins. The fact that Nas didn’t become all this sort of stuff changes people’s perception about the music and the work he achieved in his lifetime. I don’t wanna say Jay-Z sold out, but I just feel like we have to wait another 10 years to see what happens. Jay-Z’s ambition was to become like Frank Sinatra, a household name all over the planet, and own a casino in Vegas and stuff like that. And I think Nas was really sticking to knowledge. I still think the biggest point about hip-hop is in there somewhere, what happens to those two artists.

Did you decline a tour with Kanye?
M.I.A.: Because I was pregnant. I know Kanye makes it out to be this big thing, like, “She dissed me when I asked her to do a song.” Then he was like, “Then you said no to me and my tour.” I was about to have a baby! But I love Kanye, I think he’s been super-consistent, everything he’s done has been good. I like his interaction with the media, too—he’s just him, and he’s living it.

Roffle @ Kanye wanting her to tour, despite her pregnancy.

Diners at a Washington location of the Cheesecake Factory lost $117,000 to servers and their co-conspirators who stole their credit card numbers, the U.S. Secret Service said in court documents.

Nicole Ward, a former employee of the Cheesecake Factory at 5345 Wisconsin Ave. NW, has been accused of recruiting two servers to help skim the diners’ credit card numbers for a fraud ring. Ward was arrested on bank fraud charges last week. The two servers were identified in court records only by their initials and have not been charged after cooperating with investigators. The scheme started in June 2008 and ran through May 2009, according to court documents filed in Alexandria’s federal court said.

A Cheesecake Factory manager referred calls on the matter to corporate headquarters, which did not immediately return calls Friday. Ward’s attorney also did not return calls Friday.

Last year, The Washington Examiner reported that nearly a dozen servers were involved in a similar scheme at Washington-area high-end restaurants. That scheme stole about $800,000 from unsuspecting diners.

The Secret Service began an investigation into the Cheesecake Factory scheme in April 2009 after a Citibank investigator informed authorities that he had traced a number of fraud complaints back to the Cheesecake Factory on Wisconsin Avenue, court documents said. Before processing a diner’s credit card, a server must enter his or her “server number.” Agents used that information to trace the stolen credit card numbers back to two servers, who quickly informed authorities that the “skimming” devices they used to steal the numbers had come from Ward.

In November, investigators met with Ward who reportedly said she had been recruited into the scheme by a man named “Slim” and another named “G.” They paid her $40 for each credit card and over the life of the scheme she earned about $5,000, court documents said. One server reportedly told authorities that Ward paid her $25 for each number.

Authorities said in court documents that they caught a co-conspirator using a credit card number stolen from a Cheesecake Factory diner to charge $1,717 at a Sam’s Club in Woodbridge on Dec. 12, 2008. The co-conspirators have not yet been charged, court records indicate.

  72. DGtheEnigma Says:

    About M.I.A.’s point:

Truth spoken. Nothing to me is worse than to hear hip-hop fans call Jay-Z the greatest, not because his music (yes, it’s been consistently great with obvious flaws), but because his business acumen.

Somehow the sheep hip-hop fans believed this whole Jay-Z pushing “I do it for the culture. I’m opening doors for hip-hop…”. His businesses haven’t been hip-hop related in quite some time.

Nas is doing it for the culture musically — not business — see Distant Relatives.

They’re both great. But it should always be about music, not bank accounts.

well said brother, i agree 100% with your comment

  74. the real sharpy Says:

    MORE UK ARTISTERY I SEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  75. DGtheEnigma Says:

    Something to consider:

2005 – the exact year where hip-hop had a change of the guard. It involved the three people M.I.A. mentioned: Jay-Z, Nas, Kanye.

On Kanye’s Late Registration hip-hop changed forever. Nas appeared on “We Major”, which at the time was surprising considering the Jay vs. Nas beef (Kanye produced “Takeover”). During his verse, Nas summed up public perception by saying “Nas what the fans want is Illmatic still/Look at the pad and pencil and jotted what I feel…”, which is exactly what happened for every thing following this verse (Hip-Hop Is Dead, Untitled, Distant Relatives).

On the Diamonds remix, Jay spits his best (and still to this day) post-The Black Album/retirement verse, where he coined what has become what’s personifies Jay-Z: “I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, man…”

Jay-Z then went on to say that “We Major” was his favorite track on Late Registration. A few weeks later, Jay-Z and Nas reconciled their differences during the Power 105 concert.

Jay and Nas both went on to say that Kanye was the only artist who could get those two on the same album. And the same is true today. Kanye is the ONLY true bridge in hip-hop between underground and mainstream.

The last great commericial year for Hip-Hop (where sales, TV, magazines, etc)? You got it…2005.
