Video: J. Cole Talks Jim Jonsin Collab

Along with his own production work, Cole had a chance to work with a variety of A-list hitmakers. He worked with Salaam Remi and Pharrell and said his experience with Jim Jonsin was the most fruitful.

“When you think Jim Jonsin, he has #1’s. His #1’s include [Lil Wayne’s] “Lollipop” and Beyoncé and huge pop records. So when I went in there, of course I’m not going in there with an attitude. I’m going in there really like, ‘OK, what’s about to come out of this?’ Because, man, that’s really not my style. The first beat he played me was like, ‘Whoa.’ And he hadn’t heard my stuff really, but the first beat he played me was custom-fit for me.”

I’ma tell you like this, a lot of this shit is reverse of what you think it is. A lot of these so-called conscious rappers are assholes, abusers, etc. Mos Def got like 5 kids by 4 different women. Talib openly told my Muslim homegirl (shoutouts to Najlah) that he only do the conscience shit because that’s what people wanna hear from him.

    Stop snitching.

the Clipse have already peaked… theyre like Jadkiss… you heard one Clipse verse, you heard them all… same flow, same content… without the Neptunes productions, theyre just 16 bar rappers…

True. Punchlines and a good-but-always-the-same flow can only take you so far without the best beats around.

lol. Nah I’m joking. But Mos Def has never advocated not getting women pregnant. Kweli has said countless times he’s not political or consciece as people label him. I really care less about a rappers personal life though.

It be the so-called gangsta/thug rappers who actually be the coolest and more humble. Real rap.

^ what catagory you put Nas in… he walks the line of both imo. This is what seperates and puts in a lane for dolo.

^I don’t really know to be honest. Because if you notice, not a nare of them conscious niggas ever gave Nas his props for real, or just refuse to collabo with him. I find it it hard to believe that artists of the same craft haven’t crossed paths for AT LEAST a guest verse or two. JayElec, Blu, and a few other new cats are only the only ones to really give him props. The thug rappers respect Nas but I think he rubbed them some type of way with that HHID movement. I don’t really know yo. Nas is just Nas. But I’ll tell you this though. From the chicks that I’ve talked to that met him they said he’s a really cool dude. A few said they smoked with him (I’ll take that as they probably smashed, smh & lol).

I wouldnt exactly call jay e a conscious rapper tho… Son is inconceivably the whole spectrum. (pause).

^Word. These new cats don’t really be on that fake “holier than thou” shit. That’s why everybody tried to say Nas was contradictory for so many years. But there’s a fine line between contradictory and multidimensional. JayE is definitely achieving that nature of Supreme Being. As MKY said, “you got to get as low as the worms and as high the birds” [paraphrasing]. You can’t be a god and not know how to master dual natures.

  25. hl Says:

    zesty = homo

  27. hl Says:

What conscience rapper hasn’t given Nas his props?

  28. D. Billz Says:

    Rey

“Zesty” has become the new popular word for sweet and/or fruity type individuals. A lot of it isn’t necessarily prevalent, but you pick up certain non-masculine vibes about a person.

I believe it. People act like underground/alternative rappers aren’t making that kind of music to hit a certain part of the audience, and that it’s only pop musicians that do that. No, the underground guys have to be in it for the art, and not for others. Everybody is conscious of their audience, and is trying to gain the admiration of others. Even the people who say they aren’t.

What other explanation do you have if you see Public Enemy performing songs off Fear of a Black Planet to an audience that is predominantly white, in 2010 nonetheless?
