The Re-Education of Jamal Barrow
Ok, so I just had a conversation with Po. He wanted to explain why there’s been such a drastic change in his rhyme style/flow since his release from prison. I was going to wait until the next time he leaked a track, but I mentioned it on Twitter, and people were asking for an explanation, so here goes.
Here’s the gist of it: That guy we used to know pre-2001? The guy who shot up the club? The guy who stood in front of the judge and took a 10 year bid? The guy who used to spit like this?
That guy is dead.
That was the guy Jamal Barrow used to be, and he no longer wants to be that man. That man made choices that he’ll have to deal with for the rest of his life, and put his mother through one of the worst experiences any mother could ever have to go through. And he doesn’t want to be that man anymore.
He explained, in no uncertain terms, that in order for him to move forward with his life, and stay on the right path, he feels he needs to make drastic changes, and the flow you hear now, is just a small part of that.
So the Shyne you hear now, like it or not, for better or for worse, is the Shyne we’ll be hearing from here out. You don’t have to like it, but I think you have to respect it.
My opinion? I think he’s in a tough spot. On the one hand, he wants to progress as a human being, and on the other he wants to succeed as an artist. But we all know how fickle this game is. This game? It eats its young. People like what they like and if they don’t like it, they’re not trying to hear you out.
I think homie will be alright though, one way or another. I wish him the best.

Maybe a little too soon to be releasing material without knowing exactly how you want to be viewed. It’s one thing to say “this Shyne is gone” but another to say he’s gone and not give the listeners a clear indication of who Shyne is now. The beats he’s gotten on, the subject matter have all been stale rap rhetoric for the most. I thought he was gonna come back with the leather belt on hanging on his neck “Pops” style ready to lash kids wanting to rap that tough shit but don’t do tough things (c)eskay.

I honestly don’t get it. I just can’t wrap my head around why you and YN have so much love for this guy. I’ve never seen you guys cut slack for any other artist like you have for Shyne. Not for TI or Wayne who also did time (Fuck the idea of “rapper time” ALL jail time is REAL time). Not for Mysonne or Turk, both of whom did/are doing “real time”. I’m sure Shyne is a nice guy (you know the type of nice guy who shoots up a crowded night club) but I don’t care.
I never thought Shyne was a great rapper, but I never thought he was that bad. But now? He’s THE worst rapper I’ve ever heard. Him choosing to stick with that voice is just another mistake he’s made in his life. Rapping with a voice like that is like playing guitar with a broken hand. There’s just no way it’ll ever work. He shouldn’t want to sound like Rick Ross with sludge in his mouth, and he shouldn’t want to sound like Big either. He should sound like himself. And if that’s who he truly is, then he aint no dope rapper.

Truth be told, Shyne was never that great of an MC. As far as I’m concerned he was alright and a one hit wonder. What separated him from other rappers was that he sounded like BIG and Diddy’s touch (production, hype, etc). I was never a fan of his past music, IMO the only classic he had was “Bad Boyz”. I do however respect him as a man for busting his gun and doing his time like a man and I wish him luck on his future endeavors but his current music is pathetic, his voice and flow is horrible. I kinda expected this but hoped I was wrong. I love a good comeback story and was hoping this could one, at least for his fans.
I blame whoever is handling his career because they need to steer him in the right direction and let him know what he’s doing wrong. I don’t even understand why they would gamble with a single so soon, they needed to let him drop a mixtape or two to let him get his flow back, consider it a lyrical exercise. First impressions are usually long lasting and he needs to realize that there’s a whole new generation of fans that he needed to impress. I don’t understand how anybody could think that “Messiah” was going to be that single (what is going on at Def Jam). At least with a whole mixtape with over an hour of Shyne going over hot beats we could’ve gotten a better feel for him and his sound. I also think that Shyne has a bit of an entitlement issue in which he feels that because he’s an OG now any did his time like a man everyone is going to jump on his bandwagon but unfortunately that’s not enough. We might respect him as a man for enduring those trails and tribulations and it might create a great backdrop but the music has to be hot.
BTW, expect LA Reid to get fired for this.
