R.I.P. Guru

gang-starr

Gifted Unlimited lost his battle with cancer yesterday, after having been ill for a little over a year. He was 43. The tragic heart attack he suffered last month was the first anyone had heard of this.

Solar made a statement to AHH this morning and attached a letter that was “written by Guru.” Condolences to his family, friends and fans.

(all new posts will go under this one.)

I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life.

But being named our number one party school became a bit of an albatross, and the man soon ramped up mellow-harshing. Don’t get us wrong, though; we’d rather raise hell here than in Philadelphia.

The scene in what students call Iowa Fuckin’ City is epic. And last year the football team gave the Hawkeyes a reason to celebrate. As their song goes, “In heaven there is no beer; that’s why we drink it here.”*

  102. RNC Chairman Michael Steele Says:

yeha it fucked up when dudes let someone take control of there lives like that. I mean i think there’s ample reason to assume him and solar wrer and item but this is wha5s wrong with hip hop’s homophobia. dues was getting tkane advantge of and we’re gonna keep relatively quiet about this shit to respect guru by not talking about how solar could have taken advantage of him ie by being in an unhealthy loving relationship with him. because hip hop disucourse cant acknowledge hoomsexulaity at all. so solar wins. it’d be nice if hip hop community could put that aside and actually make sure that solar doesn’t get what he wants just to keep shit under cover for one of it’s heroes. that letter said solar was gonna take care of gurus son. besides that even if youre being quiet out of respect, being gay is som kind of illness of disorder, not a lifestyle choice to be frowned upon. there’s no reason to be ashmaed if he went either way.

So what. hip hop canon’s a bitch with no0 ass, it aint got shit. a guy can’t even say he like a song better than a so called classic without being ridiculed. this is the kind of shit that get people in trouble for saying Waynes a better rapper than Mystikal, because Mystikals been around for longer.

dear mamas not that grea, it never seems to get as poignant as it should, given the material pac has to write about. Kanye was more expressive even flow wise on Hey Mama, and managed to convey his emotions better than pac did on dear mama. dear mama’s overrated. hell beanie sigels had like a bunch of songs that are more emotional and meaningfull that dear mama, but he’s underrated.

Mate, First off, i would hope the remake to anything is better than the original. Those songs were at least 10yrs apart, Kanye and 2pac. Rap styles, lyrics and metaphors have come a long way since Dear Mama.
