I was listening to some of Chamillionaire’s mixtape messiah tapes after he stopped cursing, and it almost sounded strange to listen to hip hop with zero cursing and zero n/word references. Which is strange, considering that I don’t curse myself, even when I’m rapping.
    ———————————————

I keep trying to figure out why this guy didn’t stay big for long after that hit, and it feels like this decision is the only reason.

I mean he’s got a great flow/delivery, he can sing a hook like a motherfucker [better than 50 IMO], and he had a big hit too. I guess he doesn’t pick great beats either, but guys like Wayne get around that

I stopped listening to the serious after MM4 I think. The one where he rapped over ‘I Get Money’ I think.

  6. hl Says:

Chamillionaire is a dope MC. But he just kinda corny. Unlike Lupe, he doesn’t really make it work though.

It wasn’t me, but I see where whoever it was is coming from. Certain guys don’t really have the voice/flow for big beats, and I mean in terms of getting popular.

Lupe can impress hip hop heads, but he won’t really sound authoritative over big beats like most Kanye singles. That guy who said he didn’t notice Lupe on Touch the Sky was funny but he probably wasn’t alone. Lupe did great on that song, but he didn’t really “own the beat”.

Ye’s flow sucks, and his rhymes aren’t amazing but he can own a beat for some reason.

    Just my opinion though.

lol, but of all the things you could consciously stop doing to be more positive, cursing seems like the most inconsequential, I mean who doesnt swear? what difference does it make? stupid notion on his part

    ^^
I see where you’re coming from. But I don’t swear, and i can’t explain why other than to say that I wouldn’t feel right teaching a little kid to do it. It lets me know that somewhere in my mind, I think something’s wrong with it even though I logically can justify it. And I say this as a writer, who loves words and appreciates them for what they are. But honestly, it seems like the cursing and stuff is a crutch. All these cats claim they’re lyricists, and nobody can come up with a synonym or MF? Come on. Meanwhile, there are about 80 different words cats use for gun.

on the curse words subject, I don’t mind them, and sometimes they fit in (none) with the overall mood and message of a song but sometimes they’re just egregious filler, when the emcee has nothing of note to say…word to Too $hort’s…”Mutha fuck u, damn shithead bitch”, lol…sometimes, I even like the radio version of a song, until I hear the actual uncensored version, i.e, T.I.’s “Let’s Get Away”…

  52. Fresh Huxtable Says:

Not trying to censor anybody, I can appreciate it when it contributes to the art. I’m just speaking for myself.

  53. icon (trillbert arenas) Says:

as far as Cham goes, though, u gotta appreciate an artist going against the grain (no DTP), especially a so-called “southern” artist…if he can articulate without cursing, which is a difficult task when it comes to some subject matters, more power to him, right? Never been a Cham fan, per se, but he stands out (none), when compared to his contemporaries- Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, that leprechaun nigga, etc…them niggas were all one note as hell..

I appreciate Cham’s effort in his lyrics. But is he supposed to get extra points cause he’s from Texas though? lol at that leprechaun nigga though.

  56. Shooter Says:

what makes you say it’s not who Cham is? If he wants to stop, it’s a very against the grain type decision. It’s got to be really him.
    ^^^^

Im saying those dudes just rapped like that because they were just being themelves

to suddenly stop cursing after youve been doing it is censoring yourself IMO, and for no real reason, but yeah it might be just because its Chamillionaire
