Video: The Making of Jay-Z’s “Hard Knock Life”

The story that’s often told about the beat is that Jay overheard Kid Capri play it and immediately wanted it for his album. But here, Jay-Z sits down with an unidentified foreign documentary to tell the story of the song’s producer, The 45 King, who also has DJ Kool’s “Let Me Clear My Throat” and Eminem’s “Stan” to his credit. Kid Capri makes a cameo too.

via Yeezy

UPDATE: It’s from a documentary on SVT (Swedish television) that chronicles hit songs, this segment focusing on Jay-Z’s “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem.)” Watch the full thing here or after the jump. Thanks to Will.

Dilemna: I been tryna master the MPC 2000XL for some years now. Been reachin out to local rappers in attempt to put forth a mixtape/album/ SOMETHING to at least get my shit heard. But livin in Dallas its hard as FUCK to find a nigga who raps bout somethin besides rims/cars/clothes and i got beats that sometimes need more substance than that. I’m about 1 week away from rappin my goddam self on my own beats. Bein a hip hop head in Dallas Tx is a slow, painful, agonizing death. But check my page – soundclick.com/daddygreen – then listen to the beats and ask yourself if you could hear them Stanky Leg boys on my shit. I been SMFH for 5 yrs and counting……………………..

To help make ends meet, Linda McMahon took a job as a receptionist at the corporate law firm Covington & Burling, where she said she used her familiarity with French to help translate documents related to the estate of the poet Ezra Pound, who had been a client of the firm.

“She was not real excited about the wrestling business at that time,” said William James Myers, who met McMahon in 1973, when he wrestled as George “the Animal” Steele, a hirsute, green-tongued, missing-link character with a taste for the stuffing in turnbuckles.

um, nation, mark the 45 King goes back *way* further than “DJ Kool’s ‘Let Me Clear My Throat’ (which is just a chopped up version of 45 King’s classic ‘900 Number’ break, the original wasn’t produced by Mark, but by Kool himself) and Eminem’s ‘Stan'”. Try 20 years in the culture and basically breaking Queen Latifah by producing her early work…this guy also is the main producer/co-founder of Flavor Unit, a huge part of breaking Jersey as a state in hip-hop…

If you’re gonna quote a guy’s accomplishments, give him his full due and get it right…

what would you say if I was to organize a mixtape series made completely by Nah contributors? It would be called The Comments Section.
People could do their individual things, plus we could do songs based on stuff that happens on here.
