question…does anybody think Empire State Of Mind would have become as big as has become if another nigga rapped it and Alicia wasnt on the hook? Lets say…if Maino or Fabolous did it and say….Faith Evans was on the hook? I can’t help but think its like a Somebodies Watching Me situation…You could have put Charles S. Dutton on the verses as long MJ is on the hook..:unno

    Yup.

Hell, Jay could’ve disappeared from that song. Alicia Keys is big enough to get a number 1 hit on her own [I think this song was Jays first btw]. I don’t think the fanbase Jay brings to the table even liked the song.

It’s a simple but catchy song, a big name a good promotion is really all it needed.

didn’t expect to like this but it’s pretty dope. Even though nothing on this will ever top his Spend Some Time rhymes

The song’s….O.K. I guess. Mainly for the beat.

I disagree. Keys did her thing, but if a Maino or Fab was on it, it wouldn’t have that stamp of authenticity on it, being a NY record. Jay’s currently one of the biggest music acts from NY regardless of genre, and he’s been that for a while. Besides, Alicia released her own version, same hook, but it didn’t have half the legs the original did.

I wanna argue with this…but I mean the song we’re discussing is Empire State of Mind. It really isn’t much of a song, even by pop standards. Most r&b albums have much better crafted songs.

If only Ghostface had bigger singers on his record than John Legend and Lloyd…

Could that have been because that simply wasnt the direction they wanted to go in thinking that it was already exhausted? It isnt exactly like Keys has had any problems any of the other songs they have pushed. I truly think if someone else did this record it would be a tri state favorite and the rest of the country would have looked at it like…oh no not another I love ny record

You have a point about Jay-Z bringing authenticity to the record. But I mean, as far as the songs quality, and whoever liked the songs and listened to it, it’s all Alicia. Jay’s verses weren’t very good, and if not for the authenticity you mentioned, the two rappers you named would have done a better job.

I really don’t think the rap fans that Jay brings to the table really got behind this song like the American Idol viewers who probably made the song a hit did.

But that was a good point about Jay making it an authentic hit more than another NY rapper would’ve. I hadn’t taken that into consideration…
