  2. Bricktop Says:

Wall Street 2 couldn’t be dropping @ a more appropriate time. pop culture has embraced the 80’s lifestyle by no accident. white America is partying its ass off right now like never before, while black America is struggling more than it ever has since slavery was abolished. the whole point of studying history is to learn from our past and prevent the mistakes from happening again, yet here we are reliving the nightmare that was the 80’s all over again. for proof look at the state of fashion and music, which has a tendency to reflect the overall wellbeing of society.

  3. Bricktop Says:

so here’s my honest to god stance on masons: from the little i know, they’re all about world domination. my only question is, have they ever sat back and really looked at this world? and if so, are they sure that they really want to control all of it? i mean, i don’t really consider that such a great accomplishment. if they really want the world, fuck it, let em have it. just let them know that all sales are final, so ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS!!!

i’ve come to the conclusion that today’s youth (the portion of society that it takes to start any real movements) don’t utilize music the way that past generations did. look at the hippie music from the vietnam era or even early 90’s rap with the pro-Africa movement (African beads & medallions and shit like that). kids today don’t look towards rappers for this kind of outlet any longer imo.

    I disagree.

Hippies, despite what you are fed from lazy cultural canonists and rock theorists were a VERY SMALL minority. People may have listened to a lot of music made by people involved in the culture, but actual hippies were rare, and that goodness, or society would be fucked.

People listen to music for the same reasons overall as before, what hip hop represents to it’s new audience that it developed this decade is different from what it represents to it core older audience, but no doubt passionate hip hop listeners have good reason to listen to it just as past listeners of older forms of “rebel music” did.

    ——————————————————-

I firmly believe that EVERY hip hop artist of fame and repute has been behind the movement of killing POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. <- To any hip hop fan who did not grow up in the culture that spawned the genre, this is the number one movement hip hop has been at the forefront of. Whether they notice it or not.

Hip hop has been a vehicle for non-mainstream and politically incorrect viewpoints, with regard to things like gender-relations, accumulation of wealth, race-relations, etc.

Political correctness killed many of the cultural revolutions that came in the sixties with baby-boomers and sex, drugs, and rock and roll [not the same as hippie movement btw]. Hip hop and a new generation of kids that are as large as the boomers [the generation that formed hip hop’s new audience this decade, the one with less ties to the original hip hop culture] is at the forefront of finding wayts to circumvent the political correctness that has affected most media. The internet is a big part of this, and look what genre has thrived in the internet era [for ARTISTS and the ART, not sales or industry] more than rock, pop etc. HIP HOP.

I know this post is confusing, but it’s rushed, but it’s a topic I’m passionate about.

  61. Bricktop Says:

    @the Republican
    yes and no.
yes, the hippies themselves weren’t a humungous powerful force as Rollingstone mag would have kids believe, but the amount of music that the hippie movement generated is pretty massive. consider all the rock music from the 60’s and 70’s. that list is way too big. and every major rock artist, and well as numerous funksters, had entire politically charged albums. it wasn’t just one shitty tribute song every decade or so, or one “promising” sounding song on an album. the underground melted with the mainstream in ways that haven’t been duplicated since (for a shitload of reasons). everyone in society looked at music as a source of political inspiration, and damn near every musician made it a focus to answer society’s call. this type of artisitc activism on such a grande scale is unthinkable in today’s musical climate. so, with all that said, i just can’t see how today’s hiphop scene could ever start a movement other than numbing the minds of the youth to maintain global zombie status. keep trapping!

^Of course that’s where it happened. Son, it was so icy (no Gucci label) outside and heffas came from afar to my manz (@duepayer) 30th bday party. First off, I was a little heated because the Greyhoud staff played me (and a few others) by not tellin us the 5:30 bus was full so I had to wait until 7 pm to board. I didn’t get to the party until about 12:30. Yo, it was wall-to-wall heffas in there. On the floor. Dancin’. 70. RNC Chairman Michael Steele Says:

BTW, I know people are going to bring up the cultural conditions that formed hip hop, and how that SHOULD be the basis of any movement, but that’s just not true in the case of a genre as big as hip hop.

By that standard, rock died with the Beatles and the British Invasion, as obviously the Brits were not a part of the black culture that spawned rock and roll, where at least Elvis and his contemporaries were somewhat in tune with the culture [much like Eminem with hip hop].

Just like rock, hip hop has moved on from it’s original cultural influences [TO A DEGREE, but never completely obviously]. But there is a new BROADER cultural movement it has taken up, more suited to it’s NEW BROADER AUDIENCE. It’s rooted in hip hop’s original values, but expanded for the new audience. Political correctness is that. You kill political correctness, and you’ve killed a barrier to many SUPPRESSED social truths, including and going beyond the things that were swept under the rug that hip hop brought to the forefront in decades past.

Rock was the soundtrack to the old social barriers being broken in things like the Sexual Revolution, Gay rights protests [yes, get over it], and war protests. Political correctness has replaced those old social barriers, and now hip hop has come to provide the soundtrack to this new barrier dying itself.

Hope this provides some food for thought.

  73. Fresh Huxtable Says:

@Mike Steele–ehh, I dunno. If by killing political correctness you mean making people think it’s alright to use the N-word, that’s a sketchy argument. A) people were using it already, just not using it in front for certain people and B) as recent events show it’s still not PC to do so, even if ?uestlove and Kanye give you a cosign.

But, I imagine, in your party people talk crazy to you all the time, though. And they might say, “oh, I’m just not bowing down to political correctness.”

  75. Bricktop Says:

@sleep or anyone else who’s still offended by “the n-word”
wtf?! no disrespect, but nigger just isn’t that offensive anymore. it’s time to just acknowledge/understand/process/digest the history of the word AND move on. “nigger” has no where near the value that it had even a decade ago – and that’s a GOOD thing. by focussing on it in any other way only stifles the progress of the people that it was initially intended to . . . uhm . .stifle, thus enhancing its effectiveness.

now, by no means am i advocating the “forget it and it will go away” attitude towards nigger. that’s a very dangerous thing to do. but this shit has to die out.

    @the Republican
    yes and no.
yes, the hippies themselves weren’t a humungous powerful force as Rollingstone mag would have kids believe, but the amount of music that the hippie movement generated is pretty massive. consider all the rock music from the 60’s and 70’s. that list is way too big. and every major rock artist, and well as numerous funksters, had entire politically charged albums. it wasn’t just one shitty tribute song every decade or so, or one “promising” sounding song on an album. the underground melted with the mainstream in ways that haven’t been duplicated since (for a shitload of reasons). everyone in society looked at music as a source of political inspiration, and damn near every musician made it a focus to answer society’s call. this type of artisitc activism on such a grande scale is unthinkable in today’s musical climate. so, with all that said, i just can’t see how today’s hiphop scene could ever start a movement other than numbing the minds of the youth to maintain global zombie status. keep trapping!
    ————————————

Not every artists came with strong political views. In fact, punk happened in the late seventies just because of what rock had become, a bunch of people who were only concerned with their own music, and MUSICAL excess, with no cultural context. And punk still didn’t break big in the States.

And the vast majority of music listeners were not activists, more passive followers of any counter-cultural movements. Remember, the same kids who came of age in the late 60s ended up voting Reagan in twice, and became the most ardent supporter of the political correctness that has killed much social discourse in mass media. Nixon was onto something with his “Silent Majority” speech, whether people will admit it or not.

And as for the last part about what a lot of rapper do, I don’t think we can really just look at their lyrics on the surface to see what they represent as a whole. If all listeners did, people wouldn’t like hip hop much compared to what it is. What you’re really hearing is an extreme reaction to many social mores and sigs of PC that have ruined discourse in society.

When formerly poor rapper raps about his new wealth, his success with women, and is overly macho, it’s great. He’s replacing things we don’t see enough of in moves/TV/music anymore, even if he’s a bit extreme. I’m only 19, but if I ever had a son I’d make sure he listened to rap, just to counterbalance all the numbing imaging of betal-males other media exhibit. Rapper thrive in that brash, alpha male, cahracter that has disappeared to a large extent elsewhere. Kurt Cobain mocked the alpha male, and mainstream rock followed. <Social mores and PC make people ashamed of wealth, being a player, etc. But why? To most hp hop fans, this is more important than the specific of what a rapper says.

That’s why Asher Roth is a bitch ass ho. He’s some rich boy who never had to worry about money, doing a freestyle over the a milli beat about how rappers who used to live in poverty and got rich should be ashamed of themselves for celebrating. Who the fuck does he think he is? He’s a part of that old PC culture, and thank goodness he failed to get big in rap. That piece of shit.

Anyway, I’m rambling, but what I’m tring to say is hip hop is behind a movement, it the movement of killing PC, and the strange social mores that essentially, stop people from being real.

Kanye interrupting Taylor Swift was great. That bitch represents every bad thing I mentioned, even if she’s oblivious to it. She killed rock and country at the same time [I’m exaggerrating now]. Ye doesn’t give a shit if people think he’s confident, and that’s cause he’s so hip hop.

BTW, that’s probably the best flip of that Rick James beat ever.
^co-sig. Murder Inc plain and simple were making cracktastic beats during that Ashanti stretch. Of course 7 Aerolas is the only name coming to mind but Irv had 2 other cats that stayed with him makin dope tracks.
