Video: Killer Mike & Dr. Cornel West Speak on the “N-Word”

Props to Maurice Garland, who explains how Killer Mike ended up joining Dr. Cornel West on the panel.

The video starts as Mike is answering a question from an old head who asked “why do we still say nigger in 2010?” Mike answered the question, but the elder interrupted him and said “much respect, but I was addressing Dr. West.” Mike kept going though, haha…and answered the question well enough for Dr. West to pretty much agree wholeheartedly.

no black man in 2010 uses “nigger”…are people still confused to the word we use today?…another “why we use the n-word” discussion…i’ll pass

*daps my niggas out the door*

  8. cat Says:

    Please help me understand this.

There are n-words dying in Haiti. And Wyclef Jean’s Yele charity says that if you text them, they’ll donate $5 to Haiti.

Once again, n-words are dying in Haiti, and these guys will only donate (and all of $5) if you text them some crap?

What kind of n-word shit is this? Can you n-words please help me understand?

  9. TheMorningShit Says:

The debate is as tired as Benzino diss songs however thinking the word nigger came from Niger and not having enough band width to know what a Niggard is is even worse.

  10. B.Payton Says:

  13. spirit equality Says:

    deep convo though

i still think the n-word is absurd and i don’t use it. if it means black in latin, guess what, i speak english so i’ll just say black….FOH.

  14. Servant2All aka Howard Barrett Says:

Where to begin. Killer Mike’s depictions notwithstanding, every utterance a black man speaks relative to the word n*gg* or n*gg*r is NOT with love. There is, “N*gg* get the hell out of my face” and, “N*gg* I’ll kill you and be out in five years”. The latter statement being a tacit admission that the life of a black man means relatively little in the criminal justice system and thus, killing one merits less punishment.

One cannot co-opt a negative word and make it positive simply by changing the meaning that THEY have for it. I used this same argument to help convince Prof. Michael Eric Dyson that he shouldn’t bandy the word about. I suggested to him that he could no more make the “n” word positive than the word b*tch. I challenged him to go to his loving wife and say, “How was your day, my b*tch” while explaining to her that he meant it in a GOOD way. I asked that he get back with me with her response. I don’t believe that he carried out this experiment, because he is far too intelligent to think that he could get away with it.

I’m going to close, now. I happened upon this site seeking info on Bro. West’s MLK Commemorative Address this past Monday. [Full disclosure: he is my frat, but I adamantly disagree with him on this subject. But get “Democracy Matters”. You will enjoy it.] But I would like for you to take a look at a rather lengthy article I posted on this subject a year and a half ago. The link provided goes directly to the post and not the home page of the blog. It is entitled, Black Youth Revolution” and deals with race-deprecation (i.e., “N” word usage) and misogyny amongst our people. http://is.gd/6gOUJ Peace and Love!
