Video: Souls Of Mischief Talk G.O.A.T Criteria

“What’s your criteria? Who made the most money or who has the most skills?”

SoulCulture.TV caught up with Souls Of Mischief in London last month and the discussion turned to the frequently debated subject of The Greatest rappers Of All Time.

In this mini roundtable discussion, Opio and Phesto discuss the flaws of corporate lists – such as MTV’s – and the variety of factors one should consider when assessing The Greatest Of All Time, and Tajai insists (contrary to Baby’s recent comments, “How can you be the best if you don’t make the most money?”) that innovation is the most important factor. Then he puts it out there – “Name one thing Jay-Z or Lil Wayne brought to Hip Hop that’s new? …They brought nothing new to Hip Hop. Zero.” – before giving his own Top 10 G.O.A.T list.

As dumb as Baby’s quote was, I don’t think you can fairly assess a GOAT candidate without considering sales as a small part of the equation. But what do I know.

That was one of the most intelligent conversations I have heard about a top ten or how to classify the best of all time. It’s hard to take anything away from the originators.

    ^^^

word cuz as far as i know Souls Of Mischief had 1 gold album & the rest went triple nothing so of course they wont factor in sales.

If you only focus on sales you’ve missed the bus before you even reach the stop homie! Did you realize that Hieroglyphics has been independent for over a decade and own their own label? They own their merchandise so if you know about hiero you know what it is. I’m from Oakland so I got to rep for my own.

snoop fathered them all . in one way or another . as far as the ‘old new school ‘ is concerned

  16. Souls of Mischief discuss G.O.A.T. : Know the Ledge Says:

[…] NR spotted an interview that SoulCulture.tv did w/ the Bay’s best, Souls of Mischief. While in London, they get on a very thoughtful and thorough discussion about who is the Greatest of All Time in regards to rappers and MCs. Although I disagree with what they say that Jay-Z brought nothing to Hip-Hop and their basic definition of what the “greatest” means, I respect their opinions and glad to see an intelligent discussion on the topic. Quite the opposite of what we see at MTV or BET. This entry was posted by DJ Franchise a/k/a Stringer Fell on Friday, December 11th, 2009 at 7:26 am and is filed under hip-hop. Opio is stupid, sayin jay hasnt brought anything to hip hop new. Asides from making great music jay has discovered some of the best producers, just blaze and kanye to name a few. Man i love the hieroglyphics i been to 3 hiro shows but opio is just an old man, so i he likes the rappers he came up on. I fell his top ten thats his opinion.

  18. 973G Says:

If Rakim himself puts Jay in a GOAT convo why cant they? And how did Wayne take his style from Jay if Jay never brought anything new to hiphop? So Rakim, Kool G Rap, BDK, SlickRick & Scarface all started writing rhymes in their head before Jay did?? I understand the money & the sales argument to an extent but, “Name one thing Jay-Z brought to Hip Hop that’s new? …brought nothing new to Hip Hop. Zero.”……Seriously??
