Curtis: What I’ve Learned

Esquire is one of the few print magazines that I still hold a subscription to and the “What I’ve Learned” page is hands down my favorite monthly section. Curtis recently sat for one, which you can read in its entirety here. Below I’ve selected a few choice quotes.

I never saw drug use as a good option. I’d rather have an additional ten dollars than smoke. It wasn’t a decision to not smoke weed. It was a decision to hustle. It was a business decision.

There are too many entrepreneurs. We need the worker to make the process function properly.

The best businessmen in the world make a bad deal sometimes. And it’s not usually in a boardroom. Most of them marry the wrong woman. That business deal is the worst business deal of all.

Curtis Jackson. I identify with the name. When I look in the mirror, I see Curtis.

Jay-Z is as politically correct as some of the politicians. He’s safe. There’s points when you’re acquiring financing, you make adjustments. He’s made those adjustments. It’s his choice. For me, it’s not a necessity.

Air Jordan. Tiger Woods. You know how a person is made for something? Eminem is made for hip-hop. The best rapper is a white man.

Is Charles Manson a serial killer? No, he isn’t, because he ain’t do no killing. He’s a coward. He was just crazy enough to influence people to kill for him. There were a lot of Charles Mansons in my neighborhood. There were no Napoleons.

All of Curtis’ interviews should be edited like this. When you take out all of the “actuallys” and “aggressive contents”, Boo Boo can actually drop a gem here and there.

Yea, his dad molested his sisters, his mom owned/managed a strip club, and he was in and out of foster homes his entire adolescence. Dude had a shitty childhood to say the least.

He’s not, but being the best selling artist of the decade without making Hammer/Vanilla Ice/Nelly rap and being pretty amazing technically (if not content wise) is something to be commended. And granted it wouldnt have happened if he wasnt white, but still, I can’t knock him.

    Relapse was godawful tho.

Hmmm… I’ll give you Pun, if only because of his limited output. Him and Rae are difficult to compare because they’re so different stylistically. Rae cant write a blistering battle rhyme like Em, but Em can’t write a detailed narrative like Rae. Not to mention Cuban Linx 1 and 2 are better than all of Em’s LPs.

As far as 3K and Ghost go, 100% emphatic no-sign. They both rank higher on the GOAT list than Marshall. Not up for debate.

I was going to type something similar. There can be an argument made that Rae has been MVP on every Wu Tang group album. He murdered Forever and the W. And he has classic verses on Can It All Be So Simple and CREAM, the Wu’s biggest singles as a group.

Raes intro on The W>>> most rappers whole albums

    ^ and no.

got any more falsities to spread? on a track with any of those guys, em would get murked (if pun were alive, that is).

holocaust put the best verse any wu affiliate has recorded on that ‘silkworm’ track and still didn’t outshine ghost. you must be fucking kidding me.

  143. spirit equality Says:

    Black Thought > Em

^ fuck AND no. i’ve seen black thougt hold down 2 1/2 hour shows dolo impeccably. em can’t even do one song on an award show without a hype man to help him. son has the breath control of an asthmatic infant.

em isn’t even competing with anyone in the field, he hardly ever collabs with anyone near his caliber on the pen, probably out of fear of getting murked. in a 15 year career of doing loads of collabs, the only person that ever outshined thought was pun on super lyrical (and arguably monch on guerilla monsoon rap)

em has collabed with redman, jay and royce…of those collabs, royce got him once, he got royce once, he got jay and i feel like that red joint was basically a tie. dead wrong doesn’t count because it was a paste job after big was gone.

  144. spirit equality Says:

Em spit bar for bar with B-real, the outsidaz crew (one of the illest lyrically and he stood out on every track), Sticky Fingaz(who I will admit stood out on remember me), he murdered Jay, the “Forever” flunkies. Quit that “Em is scared of getting murked” bullshit. If people actually believed that garbage then all these other super mc’s wouldn’t give him the respect and props that they currently do.

Lyrically, the Eminem show was immaculate. Em’s albums have never been lauded for beats but for his resonance and lyrical dexterity over whatever beat he gets. Songs like till I collapse, Business and Soldier are perfect examples.
