Video: On The Level w/ J. Cole

They’ve gotten some pretty good guests on here. This is no different:

As the first signee to Jay-Z’s newly-minted RocNation, J. Cole is poised to be at the head of 2010’s freshman class. StreetLevel linked with the North Carolina native to talk about sneakers, clothes, basketball, and being late with the rent in NYC.

Props to StreetLevel

True but my one correction is Southern artists like Gucci, Plies and Jeezy would have been just as revered if not more so in the South but you’re probably right because nationally they would have probably remain unknown. One of the reasons lyricism is not as cherished is because southern artists and beats remain a significant power in the game.

The bar got lowered by the “evil powers-that-be” who control the industry. they know that hip hop has the greatest influence on our generation, and instead of supporting music that would uplift us, they specifally chose Gucci and other wack rappers, to influence the culture to take on a “dummy” mentality, and kill ourselves while chasing deceptive materialistic dreams. So now you have a million dudes who only rap for money, but they can’t make it, because they don’t know that in order to be anybody in the music industry, you have to play by certain rules(they’re rules.) Reference Joe Budden’s song “Just to be different”

^^^^god dam thats y i feel so bamboozled and cheated by hip hop lol. The industry feeding me garbage and selling me dreams on the radio all day. I got a 4 yr old son and sometimes i try 2 imagine what type of message hip hop will be giving him by the time he’s around 14-15 yrs old. He won’t get any of the knowledge and wisdom hip hop gave me. Shit like Dead Prez, Wu, Goodie Mob, Outkast, Fugees, Nas, Common, BlackStar, hell even the old political Pac and Ice Cube shit all the way back to Public Enemy, is all shit that he misses out on but whats gonna replace it????

Bcuz he made those beats for his album and jay jacked him for them. So instead of using normal complaints to show his disdain, he just called it his album too. and you know ye is very passionate about his music. how would you feel if the vision you had for your album ended up being killed bcuz someone took your beats?

I don’t know if it was Jay, Dame’s, or even Biggs’ idea to sign em as a in-house producer, but either way, it was Jay’s label that provided the platform for us to even be having this conversation right now.
