Video: Jay-Z Answers A Beanie Sigel Question @ Montreal Press Conference

“Well, Beanie Sigel at the time, and you can look it up if you like, was driving two Bentleys. With his momma in the sticks and selling 800,000 records, I don’t know what more you can do for somebody. What people choose to do when they attain of success— at some point you have to look in the mirror, and look at yourself. Beanie Sigel had a record deal, a record label, and a clothing line. And never went platinum, ever. I don’t know in the history of rap has anyone done so much with so little. What more can you do for a person at that point. A record deal, that’s normal. A record label and a clothing line. If that’s not pushing a person, shitttt…”

Rest of the press conference after the jump.

  36. JihaD Says:

The old “___________ is the Army” label foundation is flawed in much the same manner as a parent attempting to be “friends” with their child; at some point, the parent is going to try to disciplne the child, and the child isn’t going to have it. The large labels encouraged the “crew” movement because people are attracted to power– we root for a group of guys (with the always present “murda mami”) “forming like voltron” to take over the industry. This is why the Roc, Dipset,Ruff Ryders, G-Unit, Dungeon Family, Cash Money, Death Row, Bad Boy, etc used this template for success; We WANTED them to win–we felt as though we were a part of the “movement,”the success was shared with us all. The problem in (nearly all) these situations is that the label head is a successful artist themselves, and eventually the other artists don’t want to either A) stay under the shadow of the successful artists or B) continue to share the profit/spotlight with the other artists. Beanie Sigel, much like the Lox before him (First nigga talking that family shit/get a lotta dough don’t give the family shit~ Jadakiss), fell into the mentality that they really “were” a family (due to the culture that was fostered) and that label chain became his home. He forgot about being an artist; he was a “brother” to Shawn. That was why it was so hard to hear Shawn “refuse” to let him out of his contract, or not put him on BP3, or refuse to sign his release papers; he thought Shawn was really the person he had come to know, when in actuality Shawn was simply a Nino Brown– someone promoting friendship until you are no longer useful to his overall plans. This is why it hurts to hear Beans talk about this; sticking with the New Jack Metaphor, Beans represents G Money– A disgruntled fuck-up who really thought this ONE person would be “his brother’s keeper,” regardless of the actions which led up to the final falling out. The Song/conversation and response that Shawn just relayed pretty much juxtaposes the final confrontation between Nino and G-Money, with Shawn’s response being the final shot to the head– he didn’t quite believe what he was saying himself, but he knew he had to create some finality to the situation.

My point is, it’s crystal to pretty much everyone on the outside looking in that Jay was clearly grinding to position himself as the most powerful cat in hip hop and the goat. He wasn’t on this mission to get to the top and break bread with ppl from his past.

Ms Hip Hop, you’re misinformed!!! Period.
I’m sorry, I didn’t want to attack a person character..but i say this bc you speak too confidently about that which you know NOTHING about! How is one man (Jay), who in all actuality and employee his damn self, suppose to change the workings of the most corrupt business on earth…and the music business is indeed that!

Ms Hip-Hop..no shots, but it deeper than you can imagine..

    ^

I dont expect him to do it overnight. I dont expect him to be just one person to make the entire change but Jay Z is a massive influencer, an intelligent man and trust me if he wanted to take the first step to making the music business better he could because he has a dedicated mind to do so. What you are explaining makes complete sense to you because you are use to the way the music business works and numb to anything of it ever changing but it can if focused upon.
Ray Charles was the first artist that owned his masters to his music in the years he did only because he couldnt see it any other way and focused on getting them, not believing “well thats just the way it is, artist cant own them”

Ms hiphop is some little naive hiphop fan. Jayz can change the culture of the music business? how old are you? Your business acumen lacks considerably. Thats like saying Obama has the power to change washington. You can tell by people’s statements how intelligent or sharp their mind is.

    ^

He sure can change it, not overnight but at least be the beginning stages of it for others to carry it on. You can call it naive all you want but in fact its the truth, one that you prob cant see because you cant see anything greater than whats in front of you as obtainable change..change is one step at a time. Im sure you were prob saying a Black man couldnt be president before as well?

    it’smep Says:

You can be business minded and successful and still have morals. Jay is a great artist and he is a great business man.

    ^

EXACTLY. People do it all the time. Everyday.

  39. Higher Thought Says:

This is a very revealing yet re-occurring situation in rap. But on many other levels and venues among black ppl. The reason there are plenty of churches in the black community on the surface looks like there is lots of righteousness but in fact it is becuz there is lots of division. The moment a person disagrees with the other they go and start a new church of blah blah blah.Eazy E vs NWA, vs Ice Cube, vs Dr. Dre, …etc.
Having said that, Beans is hurt and has been able to hold it off much longer than most (which shows some character). But again, the brother is hurt. But the problem is that the game they playing in isnt nor ever has been a game. It is a business, BIG BUSINESS. And the first one to do real business wins. We as a ppl have a way of staying base in a situation and not evolving. There are ppl around ‘your man’ who are strictly business and are eating off, sending kids to college, establishing trust funds all off ‘your man’. So they are bout it bout it. So no matter what you and your mans relationship is, or what you all agree and shake hands on, the pprwork is keep and maintained by those taking care of business. It aint personal. The hurt Beans has is that he thought/still thinks Jay is TOTAL control. And JAY THOUGHT he WAS in TOTAL control and he really isnt. Whatever worth Jay has someone else is WORTH more based upon Jay’s worth. And Jay is contracturally liable to that person or entity. Because a person is an artist doesnt mean they dont have obligations that are written in stone. That’s what is called BUSINESS. Solution: Jay, within your power(because at your level you do have perks) and knowledge and personal integrity. Go to your brother and whatever you can do because you know he is talented, will be making the ‘History’, you claim motivates you. This is more of a opportunity than not. This isnt like other beefs. At least it doesnt sound like it. This is the one that can cause you to loose sleep at night. Beans was green, driving two Bentleys isnt that clear? He didnt no perhaps anymore or even less than what you knew when you came into the Business you thought was a game. It would be a great point in the history of Black business and black men relationships to end the division. Isnt that what we came for?
Keep this in mind, because this is a business those whose business is to exploit have a way of …. exploiting a breach. Every relationship has rough spots and hollywood couples catch hell. And there you are waaaay in Paris and the lil homie’s comment from Philly is getting primetime. That little comment from Beans about the wifey that he is holding close to him NOW ….what if those whose BUSINESS is to rock ships (since we keeping it gangsta) makes Beans an offer he cant refuse? They would have a field day making a GAME out of your personal BUSINESS. Go make it right my brother its the highest thought. I know you are already home but show that brother who obviously has lost his way but has been sobered by your success and departure, maaaaaan show that brother home and lead by example!
Jay do what is within your power to do.

This comment above is a perfect example of the hate, that hate made.
This is actually REALLY funny to me, reading all these comments, the bickering and back & forth. I like it, its a break from the norm for me.

Question for all the haters in here…why hate on a man that has NOTHING to do with the well being or day-to-day outcome of YOUR lives???

Its just a question, no need to come back with homophobic or derogatory n-word replies. I seriously want to know what is is about Jay’s success that bugs you all so much? If anything you should look at what he’s done and try to immulate certain parts of his behavior. I know some of y’all rap or want to play sports or be like eskay or doing something where you want high reward but no work…but unfortunately for most of y’all…sht aint happening as martin would say..lol

We need to have a real conversation about why what 50, Beans or Jay say sparks such a debate and make everyone so confrontational about things that have NATHANIEL to do with your day to day lives. I know 4 out 5 of you in here have no health insurance. Petition about that. I know its school assignments not being done because you’re in here watching and talking about the next man’s moves. They say this isn’t the way to engage the youth, but I really want to have a serious conversation with whomever it serious about it. Bc we are a culture are the ONLY one living this to the letter and this is to the detriment, not benefit of our people.

If anyone want to holla..pls do and if you live in the NYC area…Manhattan or BK, we’re looking for college accredited interns…(entertainment/fashion based)

No shots Coonery, but you have nothing to prove by your statement I quoted.
So I know someone is gonna tell me to kill myself bc i typed an essay or whatever..lolol…but let’s talk or debate and respect each other opinions and keep it moving.

They really put Jay in a comfortable space(50 word). Banks and Yayo were with Curtis BEFORE he was a successful recording artist/ tank-top model. Jay was 2 albums in before Beans came on board. I’m sure Malik and Ty-Ty aren’t hurting for doe b/c they were there from day 1.

  46. Simple and Plain Says:

Let me find out what they been saying about Jay is true. He’s a capitalist if ever I saw one. The definition of capitalism is fucking everyone over at all costs, just to get ahead yourself. On the real, Jay really did Kanye dirty quite a few times. And his fake retirement/ Def Jam exec move showed him moving in that Pop music direction and leaving the streets. i.e. no more State Prop, no more real ‘hood’ artists. no more Rocafella.

I understand people grow and change, but Jay didn’t really, truly have the streets until he had State Prop. And why did he never have a real crew from Brooklyn on the rap tip? Damn, from NY even? Hinsight is 20/20 and even though I love Jay’s music and own every one of his albums (Even Streets is Watching, Best of Both Worlds, Dream Team), I’m starting to see Jay for what he really is. Jay is about Jay. Point blank. Period. I can’t be mad at Beans. Jay at least owes Beans enough to at least come back with a track or really, seriously, clear the air.
