    >>but foreal MTV doesnt know rap

this is a stupid statement because the list really isn’t that far off. plus, I guarantee you that Shaheem and Rahman know more about Hip-Hop, or at least as much about Hip-Hop than alot of you niggas.

historically, MTV played themselves with their coverage of Hip-Hop by ignoring it for too long, but I don’t think anybody can say that Yo MTV Raps wasn’t a monumental rap outlet.

just because the ignorant suits that ran the place in the 80’s made mistakes, doesn’t mean that everybody who’s there now doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

niggas think MTV and they think white guys in suits and rock snobs, but that’s not really the case anymore. Sway ran one of the most important hip-hop radio shows in the country for mad years and is respected by damn near every legendary rapper out there.
    ^^^^^^^^^^^
foreal though….them niggas dont know rap….that list is mainly based on youtube/google,twitter hits which may include random acts of fuckery (or planned),how much they sell albums, ringtones, how many business ventures…what real hiphop head give a shit about that?

    >>If I’m not mistaken OJ held Himself as well as the whole Bricksquad click down while Gucci was in jail….

i never heard of that nigga until Gucci got out of jail and that song they had popped. I’m not saying he wasn’t hot in Atlanta beore that, I’m saying he wasn’t hot on a national level and he still isn’t really at that point yet.

I know you hate dude (i’m pretty ambivalent), but come on son. Almost 200thou sold on an EP where the songs have been available for free. Closing the BET awards, smashing Rhianna, a Mary single, Forever, and a Jay album cut.

is that 7 minute freestyle the reason Jay never gives Big L props or r.i.p. shouts? There has to be a reason. Pac didn’t like Jay at all, hated him but Jay stay saluting him. For the criteria, we factor in the following: How the MC’s words penetrate on the mic: Can their lyrics stab hearts, does their flow enthrall you? Obviously we look at how they implement their talent with the quality of music as well. The music is always primary, but not the only aspect of a Hot MC. We look at their success, both musical and entrepreneurial: Do they sell albums, singles and ringtones? Do they top the charts? Are their records heavily spun on the airwaves? Do they have businesses that flourish? Have they put other MCs in the game? Do companies clamor to get them to endorse products? And finally, there’s the intangible, impact: Of course you can look at metrics such Google hits, Twitter followers and YouTube views — which we do — but do these MCs move the needle on the culture? Can the mere mention of their names start conversations? Do they start trends? How much do they get fans engrossed? What’s their buzz? Keep in mind though, these are the main factors. When the Hip-Hop Brain Trust sits down, passion over a certain issue or artists will ultimately determine who ranks where

^this is a moronic statement in so many ways. how the fuck is the list based on google and twitter? that doesn’t even make fucking sense. most of the artists on that list don’t even have twitter accounts and most are bigger than Youtube, meaning their videos actually play on TV.

and what do you mean by ‘real hip-hop head’? because i know plenty of real hip-hop heads, meaning people who pay attention to lyrics and love the music, who also pay attentinon to what artists do business wise. so if you’re saying that real hip-hop heads shouldn’t care about who’s ‘hot’ then why are you reading the list and complaining about it?

because I consider myself a real hip-hop head, but I still pay attention to what’s going on in the mainstream and I think that list is mostly on point.

It’s going to end up at least 200K. Yea, the Mary song sucks, but the hook is the best part of Off That. Not to mention the crackish Throw it in the bag remix, and shutting down NY that nite (well, at least that’s how the blogs painted it).

marketing ply for who though? MTV? of course the list is meant to drive traffic to their site and eyeballs to their TV show. again, whatchu think mtv is a charitable organization? of course they want hits so they can make money. Vibe did the same thing with the top blogs list, Forbes does the same thing with the richest rappers list, and blogs do it everyday with Top 10 lists. but that doesn’t automatically discredit the list. if that was the case, then every list in the world would lack credibility.

I mean, tell yourself whatever you want, but OJ ain’t popping like that outside of Atlanta. Gucci? yes. OJ? notsomuch. and I don’t know why you keep bringing up Rae when I’ve repeatedly said that I wouldn’t have put him on the list. you must be one of them non-readin’ bammas.

  53. Frank Says:

All lists lack credibility because they are based off of opinion, regional bias, and personal tastes. MTV’s list was bullshit because their criteria for”hottest” changed from rapper to rapper, rendering any type of “understanding” moot. If albums released, sales, features, etc were the point, then people like Drake, Lil Wayne, Kanye, Gucci, and Jeezy shouldn’t be on the list. The only artist to release something for retail is Jay, Fabo, and Rae, and William. Of those three had #1 albums, with both Fabo and William still struggling to reach gold status on a major, and Rae selling amazing on an independent with little to no support. 50 was getting radio interviews and coverage for releasing a mixtape, had over 100,000 DL of War Angel in a day.

Second, what was the point of the fan poll if it didn’t matter? MTV knows exactly what they are doing with that list; TI’s run this rap shit, and they are gonna push the people they want, simple as that….
