Jay-Z Interview w/ Oprah (Preview)

Oprah.com just threw up a preview of her interview with Shawn, and in it they briefly discuss selling crack, how any success story out of Marcy got out of Marcy, getting shot at:

Oprah: This is where we differ. This is where we differ. Because I’d be very scared! Weren’t you shot at three times—within six feet—and you lived to talk about it?

Jay-Z: That was divine intervention. Divine intervention, and nobody knowing how to shoot.

Oprah: What happened in each situation?

Jay-Z: It was one situation, three shots.

In there, they also discuss the three things ittakes to go from where Jay comes from to where he’s at today (his winning formula), the fact that Jay’s generation took the fire pin out of the grenade with the N word, his pact with Bey not to talk about eachother (Oprah has talked about that to Beyonce before, [||]) how they planned a secret wedding and finally eating pizzas at a BYOW in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoons.

The whole thing will be in the October issue of O Magazine, which also drops on September 15th, so expect a scan of that. I’d tell you to support print, but it drops the same day as Jay’s XXL cover, and I’d hope you know which one to go with.

Lol, i can sympathize with this gripe but that chapter is over. When will niggas come to terms with this? Rae kept it vintage hip-hop all his life and Jay progressed as an artist and person, now compare and contrast where they both are in their respective lives.

  3. Mr. Iceberg Slim Says:

Who are you to say who the streets are??? Act like every ninja from the street want to hear gun/crack music, I hear inspiration all thought the album and to me that’s street music, shit when I was getting my doctorate from uf all I blasted was jigga music to get me motivated and I really “ran the streets in my younger years, from new have to Bridgeport to Rhode island to Burlington vt and back and I thank god I woke up…im done talking to these silly muthu fckas

And being a successful Black Man is the ULTIMATE in NUTS in their face…

    ^

    this is true.

but, let these niggas tell it, jigga is first and foremost a (GOAT) rapper, a product of hip hop, which is completely anti-thetical to him rubbin shoulders with the existing power structure and climbing the ladders to embed himself in the upper echelons of the system.

sure we need brothas up there to do what they do, but dont bring hip hop up there with you, cos thats a poisonous space for the art form to be.

  6. Breaux Brosephson the !! Says:

Now is when he should let his nuts hang
    ——–
You sell his ability short by saying that. Really think about it. I’m pretty sure he didn’t think he would become this successful when he made RD and now he’s thinking “if I did this, what else can I do”…..at this point in time it’s deeper than rap, which I have to respect him for. I read an interview where Jay said his goal is to become the CEO of General Electric. If that’s where your mind can take you now is not the time to revolt against the system, because there’s still work that needs to be done. You can’t cut loose just because you made it to the top of a small section in corporate america, esp if you feel like you can do better. Jay can do more for people as the CEO of GE than he can as the head of Roc Nation. I think by the time he’s accomplished his personal goals he’ll settle into old black man talk and tell whitey to kiss his ass. Now is not the time.

  35. 456 Says:

interesting conversation. I think its one thing to say Jay sold out, and its another to say he lost his street relevance. You can’t project your hiphop fantasies on him…he’s not here to be what you want him to be. he’s making his own decisions with success and money. when he paid for sean bell’s children, was that not for the streets? when he paid 5 million to make sure he own his shit, was that not for hiphop? paving the way? niggas is so surface with thier analysis that half of what jay-z does flies over your head.

  36. Black Says:

The line of niggas that Hov has done dirty (none) is long as shit though. I just think that hov will do anything for a check.

  37. Geronimo P Says:

It amazes me that some of yall are sitting here like Jay sold out, he aint hood, he don’t do this for the hood, etc.

The only thing that I can say, is actually go back to marcy and do shit for your ‘jects. No argument there.

But the whole, let your nuts hang, don’t be a part of the system cuz you got money now shit is dumb to me.

First off, you can never have enough money. When they want to take your shit, they’ll wait for you to slip and take it (see: Michael Vick).

Second, yeah Jay got enough money for HIS lifetime, but what if that nigga really want Rockefeller money, Hilton money, Walton money. That generational money. Where his great grandkids won’t have to do shit cuz but get in trouble and pay their way out of it cuz their name is Carter. Yall are still thinking small time.

  38. Mr. Iceberg Slim Says:

You right but at the same time it just made me think about the Oprah episode with Common, Simmons and the chicks from whatever school it was and the chicks was talking bout Hip Hop having such a negative influence and they cited the fact that when they go to clubs niggas act so disrespectful as evidence. These chicks was in they 20s so i imagine the niggas was too. Anyone that old has no excuse to be influenced by a record.

Not them, but the families of people (some cops & firefighters) who sacrificed their lives to save others.

even though I think teh gov let the towers fall, people still tried. He aint giving money to the NYPD, but to the kids of those people who put themselves out there like that. big difference. Now if he donated money to a new police academy & 140 new squad cars to patrol the hood then I could see.
