Drake Says He Always Knew Hov Collabo Wasn’t The Single, “Run This Town” Was Originally A Rihanna Track

drake-young-jeezy-summerjam-june-7th-2009-ernestflickr

“I don’t know who [DJ Skee] came up with that rumor to be honest, but I always knew what Jay’s first single was going to be,” the hype-building Toronto MC told the BoomBox this afternoon. “Me and Jay did a lot of work together. Maybe at one point he was considering doing it and someone got over-excited and put out a press release tweet that I was going to be on the first single.”

So what does Drake, who is working on his Young Money/Universal Republic studio debut ‘Thank Me Later’ following the rousing success of his mixtape ‘So Far Gone,’ think about the chest-beating track? “I think Jay made a great choice,” he says. “I think the ‘Run This Town’ song is phenomenal. I think Kanye kills that s—. I actually heard that song when it was a Rihanna track.”

As for now, Drake is optimistic that he will still appear on Mr. Carter’s upcoming September 11 release. “I had a conversation about it a couple of days ago,” Drake says of his studio work with the Jugga man. “We have more than one record to pick from. Jay-Z is one of those guys that’s just too good. I would be definitely disappointed if I wasn’t on it. I think it’s going to be a legendary project. I have my fingers crossed.”

He kinda hinted to MTV on the Best I Ever Had set that the collabo wasn’t a single.

Very quickly then. Not that I’m yielding any of my emcees (just because they’re not on MTV every day doesn’t mean they can’t rap). You agree that he’s at least 11. If you don’t know Atmosphere you don’t know rap.

    Add to the list

    Eminem
    Slick Rick
    Big Daddy Kane
    LL
    Lauryn Hill
    Andre 3 Stacks
    Phonte
    Kool G Rap
    KRS
And a slew of new dudes including Blu, BOB Killer Mike and Dro (the latter 3 being signing to TIP’s label) are doper than him.

And remember we’re talking rapping, not selling records. TI maxed out around Urban Legend. Everything else was dope beats and boasting.

“As a Cubs fan, my friends and I frequently travel to ‘Wrigley North’ to catch games. This year, we went to the April 12 Sunday Night Baseball game. My friend secured good seats, second row just about on the left field foul pole. There were four of us, seats 5-8. We show up a late, just before game time (we caught the end of the Masters before heading in). Anyway, we go down to our seats, and there is a family sitting in seats 1-4. Dad, mom, daughter (maybe 19) and son (16 or so). The problem is, being Wisconsin mouth-breathers, they are fat as fuck. Honestly, the daughter, who was supposed to be in seat 4, was spilling into the area of the bench marked 6. Each of them looked like the spawn of Dom Deluise and Rosie O’Donnell, but blonde. When my friends and I tried to cram in, the daughter had the nerve to yell AT US for trying to sit there, and told us there wasn’t room. Clearly. Anyway, after shoehorning ourselves in, we proceeded to find out exactly why ‘sconnies look the way they do. In the first six innings of the game (they left after 6!), the girl alone polished off the following: a bratwurst, a soft pretzel, a slice of pizza, fried cheese curds, and cheese fries. Oh, and about 4 miller lites. Welcome to Miller Park.” (Brian)

Just a couple experiences for the stadium that weren’t necessarily terrible, but highly indicative of the Oakland atmosphere: 1.) When sitting in the plaza level with friends, we all flasked the game up and were taking swigs as young men would. Course, within 10 minutes, a street-wise security guard pulled us from the seats. He tells us he is going to kick us out because the TV camera saw us drinkin from flasks. But instead of doing that, he proceeds to tell us ‘listen, i smoke weed too, so i’m just gonna let this shit slide. all i’m askin is that if you gonna keep drinkin, leave the seats and shout me a holla cuz i could use a free drink myself’

I remember the rowdiest game I ever went to was the first game John Rocker came back from that suspension from saying all that dumb, racist shit in Sports Illustrated. I lived right above the hill, we’re all just drinking and smoking because it’s a Friday and decide to just head down. Smoking a joint all the way up to the entrance, pounding beers right at the entrance…shit was insane. As soon as we sat in your seat my homie smacked a dude in a Chipper Jones jersey in the back of the head who was in front of us, little scuffle breaks out and we just dip before security comes. Then we just rolled straight to the bullpen…mad dudes in suits and walkie talkies eyeing us, and my other friend just throws a handful of peanuts at Rocker and we all got kicked out. Another time we were at a game late in the season, Padres were in last place and I think it was the year the Giants went to the Series…so all their bandwagon fans filled up Qualcomm. Must have been like 80% Giants fans, and there were chants in the Stadium like “Padres Suck! Padres Suck!” and that shit was infuriating because we were drunk and getting heckled in our own stadium LMAOOOOO. Anyways by the 7th inning sitting in the bleachers, it got to a point when it was like me and 3 friends and at least a 100 Giants fans heckling us. We had enough of that shit.

Marquis Grissom gets done warming up in the outfield and throws the ball in the crowd to the Giants fans in our section but the faggot Giants fans had no hands and my buddy ends up catching the ball. Everybody justs starts booing the shit out him so he curl-hops and throws the ball back at Grissom and that shit went RIGHT over his shoulder. Then he called out like 10 dudes but nobody stepped up and we all got thrown out immediately. Hahaaaa…cops were like “lucky that ball didn’t hit him, you’d all be in jail on assault charges”.

The Times of London claims that public relations fallout from Dave Carroll’s catchy videos panning United Airlines for breaking his beloved $3500 Taylor guitar and then denying his damage claim may have cost the airline’s shareholders up to $180 million.

The first song, United Breaks Guitars, has now been played 3,515,357 times on YouTube, become a smash hit on iTunes, and has resulted in Carroll’s rather bemused appearance on every major news network in America. Meanwhile, within four days of the song going online, the gathering thunderclouds of bad PR caused United Airlines’ stock price to suffer a mid-flight stall, and it plunged by 10 per cent, costing shareholders $180 million. Which, incidentally, would have bought Carroll more than 51,000 replacement guitars.

United’s stock, which trades below $4 per share, actually rose after the videos came out in early July. The stock only fell after little things like second quarter earnings were released. The stock has since recovered.

Dave Carroll’s videos show the power that a single aggrieved consumer can wield, but we would be very surprised if they had any impact on United’s stock—though wouldn’t it be great if they did?

SMH at Fatman Scoop on the Slaughterhouse album.

    Seth Gueko Says:

people still hate cuz people don’t understand lyrics

    ^^^^

Just cause you dont understand it dont mean that he’s nice, just means u dont understand all the bull shit the he writes

and i dont think people are hatin on nas the m.c but nas the man

  189. Andre Etherer Says:

I said nas was maybe the greatest MC … That’s his job that’s not who he is as a man … As a man, he exhibits loser traits …

Signing with Hov and Def Jam after wiping Hov’s sperm out of Destiny’s carseat, and being a serial sucker for love are two examples of this

  190. Black Says:

I respect Nas for the fact that he has built up a core audience that will guarantee that he can go at least gold regardless of the climate and/or the type of music he decides to make. He hasn’t really had a contrived transparent radio attempt since that Ginuwine fiasco. He gets to make the music he wants and make a pretty good living off it and i think everyone has to respect that.

That said, Nas’ taste in women<<<<<<<<<

  191. Seth Gueko Says:

    nas the man ?
can u explain whats wrong with THE MAN so ?

    As was said of Elvis:

“He was a genius musician, but an amateur human being.”

  193. Andre Etherer Says:

VH1 top 100 rap songs is so random… The list’s order has no rhyme or reason

  194. Mr. Iceberg Slim Says:

Tru but i dont blame nas for that, nas reminds me of one of my homeboys, he loves being in love…..some dudes just suckers for luv..the only thing i hate about nas is he is like LL cool J, all the years they have been in the game, u cant name one. m.c that they ever brought in the the rap game….

Not sure how elvis was a genius, when over 65 percent of his top hits were already recorded by black artist and he openly admit he would go to the nigga sop hops to steal and take there moves

  196. Black Says:

“Maybe,” Jay said about the need of a new ‘Takeover’ record. “[laughs] That’s a great idea, actually. Maybe. Yeah I go through [considering a diss record], usually I talk myself out of it by the time my day starts. With such a great life, it’s difficult.

^^^I kinda see where he’s coming from (nh). If I was worth half a billie i prolly could care less if some nigga i never met was talking shit bout me. Let alone want to devote time to writing a song about that man.

  197. Rockabye Says:

Yeah, so this Slaughterhouse album sampler is dope. The hovering, carnival-esque synth on “Cuckoo” is still stupid as hell, though.

i CO SIGN THIS a hundred times,

  199. Seth Gueko Says:

    beanie sigel, freeway, young chris
are why jigga was so successful
jigga used these cats like his
    STREET SOLDIERS cuz he
    wasn’t on the street
    jigga needed that
    ll and nas not.
but shout out to jz for this rocafella period nevertheless

people still talk about carmen and da condom’s line
that was more disrespectful than hiphop… don’t forget that freestyle when jigga talked about nas’ daughter…
    but
FUCK JAYZ FUCK JAYZ… and the whole “ETHER”
and THEN jigga sucks nas on MTV and live on Stage “I Declare War”
did a ft on his album and sign him on his label like the new success n ressurection since bleek and young gunz flops.. !
THAT IS THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY… if u wanna see jigga as the loser of that story.
BUT PEOPLE WONT SEE THAT CUZ JIGGA IS A MOGUL
HES THE BUSINESS, MAN. whatever (ps: and i like jiggaman so)

“just two albums in, and i’m the realest nigga on this label”. one

    ^^^

What was so disrespectful was it was true, no lies but true…my thing about ether was it was just nas snapping on jay or just throwing jokes, but when u break it down nothing were facts….and the most disrespectful song about nas was actually is that ur chick, i mean jay 3 verses were all directed an the little homie nas

  201. Mr. Iceberg Slim Says:

I hate to burst some people bubbles, but outside of real hip hop heads nas is so irrelavant, i mean seriously ask ur girl what was her last fav. nas song…Shit, think for urself what was nas last 3 singles…….u got time, ill wait

  202. Seth Gueko Says:

yeah but it’s not cuz his wife cheated
that he lost a war againt his greatest fan

  203. Seth Gueko Says:

if hiphop iz singles okay nas has not big rap charted singles
it’s hiphop is albums tell me if jigga can make an “Untitled” type album ?
nah…i don’t think so.. jigga is on the repeat mode..same method, same success
nas has probably the greatest hh catalogue alive
more an emcee than an entertainer (and i like jiggaman again)
but for a lyrical/conscious/intelligent rapper Nasir has the greatest career to me. platiniums and gold album. more than 10 milli sold. what else, that’s enough to me, not ?

i think that u will see Distant Relatives
a more human best of both worlds album than jigga
nas is a better artist than jigga. word up

  204. Tong Po Flo Says:

nas is a better artist than jigga. word up

^ True, Jay is a business he said it himself

  205. protectyaneck Says:

nas has probably the greatest hh catalogue alive

    ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  206. Bee Raz Says:

    nice article, and informative

  207. Chris Says:

Kanye’s verse sounds a lit like drake wrote it

  208. brooklynchild Says:

Time out, Jay-z is the greatest lyricist of all time, his body of work is crazy, yes im bias but men lie women lie , but numbers dont , I honestly don’t think nas being better than jay on any level is a discussion worth having. I like nas though.

  209. Busted Keys Says:

the most interesting angle of this article is how Jay-Z collaborates with everybody. from a musical point-of-view, it’s great because it expands his horizons as an artist. from a PR point of view, it gets the word out beyond the circle of hip-hop.
