Audio: Jay-Z Interview w/ DJ Semtex

Here it is.

When asked about why he made a third “Blueprint” album, he said that he wanted to finish trilogy, like he did with the “In My Lifetime” series. As he’s said before, the first Blueprint was very much influenced by what he listened to growing up, but what he expanded on was the sound of the second one that wasn’t at all what people were expecting after having heard something like Blueprint. He tells Semtex Blueprint 2 was based on the sounds and influences of that moment, which is why he got artists like Lenny Kravitz and Sean Paul on there, to hold down both Rock and Reggae genres that were popping half a decade ago.

As for the albums features, he said that MGMT, Keed Coodie, Drake, Mr Hudson, Kanye West and Rihanna are on there for the moment, but all that can change by the time he has to hand it in. Production-wise, it sounds like the only beatmaker who’s secured a spot on there is Kanye because even Timbaland sounded uncertain. He said he spoke to Just Blaze last week, hopefully that’ll work out. Swizz Beats will possibly be on there and he said that he’s trying to work with Chase N Status of the UK. He’s been over there recording tracks too apparently (presumably working with Rihanna) and most recently to meet with Mike Kyser of Atlantic, and hand deliver the album.

He was asked about a possible “Takeover 2.0” and he said that he often considers it but then he decides against it. Semtex also asks him about his “we need a board” comments and about about Kanye’s blog and the nature of the Internets right now. He asks him if he reads any of the blogs and Jay admits that he goes through all of them in “spurts,” mentioning visiting Kanye’s, NahRight and AllHipHop. [7:20]

The interview then segues into a discussion about how that’s always something people wonder about artists of his caliber. Especially Jay, considering all we know about him and computers is that he did an ad for HP, Billie Gates is his peer, he uses an Apple (like that traitor Pharrell) and e-mails pictures to YN. He says that he might want to start his own website, but that like everything else he gets into, he’d like for it to be done the right way. And for the right price, we can make your site tighter…

Sad Really… when asked about J. Cole & Wale joining Roc Nation, Jay-Z says that Mickey Factz isn’t on the team. Ouch.

Lastly, the last matter they discussed was Jay’s favorite track on BP3 and he says it’s a record called “Empire State of Mind.” For the moment (the interview was conducted on Wednesday) no one was featured on it but Jay said that can change. With all the fuckshit you-know-who is going through right now, and the half of whatever empire he’s gonna be left with, we’ll see how that works out…

Props to Semtex. Follow @Semtex on Twitter in case he gets that call.

nation murked this post – nice write up.

BUT Jay is still a hypocrite for syaing beef is corny. he knew the consequences of name dropping rappers in a freestyle, derogatory or not.

    no one can deny that.

  4. sol fraze Says:

If anybody seriously thinks Kanye killed Jay on that Run This Town track, you need to reevaluate your lyrical criteria (no stannery). Somebody tell me, honestly, what line Kanye spit that you actually thought was dope? With the Eminem verse, Em dropped a classic verse against a very good Jay verse that got eclipsed. Kanye did not have any truly notable lines in that verse (and I am a Kanye fan since pre-Dropout). Jay didn’t drop anything mind blowing either, but his lines are definitely SMARTER than Kanye’s. It’s a sad day in hip hop when intelligent rhyming is considered by “hip hop heads” to be murked by flashy but otherwise unremarkable wordplay.

Niggas was on Kanye’s genitalia in the Run This Town thread. I did everything right… I waited till I got on the whip to bump the track… Took all the dick riding with a grain of salt and listened with an open mind… The only thing Nahggers got right, is Jay being on auto-pilot. Ye’s verse was… OK, but niggas was crowning him and everything. Shits disgusting, and I bump all of kaynes shit from CD to 808s…

Just finished listened to that Hov track, how he gonna let Ye’ go off like that. Like AMP said in terms of HOV he sorta underwhelmed us, hopefully after a few more listens it may grow on me a la D.O.A. (with the music vid)

    Still a stan though.

  10. AmpGeez a.k.a. Nahstradamus Says:

Amp you should check the whole Thousand Miles and Running as well as The Mixtape About Nothing. Wale is better than the single he put out. That Gaga isht was extremely disappointing. And Nike Boots does get slept on until people realize that he’s not talking about shoes.
    =================================
I have both of the tapes you mentioned and Nike Boots is my favorite song from him. My issue was all the hype surrounding him when I hadn’t seen any evidence he could succed on a commercia/mainstream level.

Hov wasn’t spitting anything impressive on that track. If he HAD got a verse from Jeezy and sent it to the mixtape Weezy, nuccas probably would have a legitimate case for him getting murked on his on track. And that’s sad when we’re talking about Weezy and Jeezy. Yeezy is at least fresh enough with his verses lately that you think one day MAYBE he will spit a verse that is better than Jay on the same track.

  29. UE Ltd Says:

i dunno man……..i just listen to this hovito joint again and yea…….lyrically, im gonna have to swing back towards hov.

but you know what, imho i just like to hear ye when he’s on a fire track like this. granted, he’s probably spat alot better 16’s but he does go in on this……the track just seems to fit him a little more to me

    Notable lines to me:
“And our girls are Blackbirds, riding with their Dillingers/
I’ll get more in Depp if you boys really real enough”

“You can call me Caesar, in a dark caesar,
Please follow the leader, so Eric B. we are,
Microphone fiend, its the return of the God”

“And they ain’t got no cake, they should throw they hand in cause they ain’t got no spades/
My whole team got dough, so my Bankhead is looking like Millionaires Row”

As far as Kanye, his verse was like a 7-7.5/10 for the first 8 bars, and like a 5.5-6/10 for the last 8 bars.

Kanye is nice on the first half of his verse:
“It’s crazy how you can go from being Joe Blow,
To everybody on your dick, no homo,
I bought my whole family whips, no Volvo,
Next time I’m in church please no photos,
    Police escorts, every passports,
This the life that everybody asks for,
This the fast life, we are on a crash course,
What you think I rap for? To push a fucking Rav 4?”
-And this verse sounds less nice every time I listen lol….

So I guess looking at it like this, Jay was slightly more consistent with his verses (tho that was consistently mediocre), while Kanye started off hot and then lost me with “feels good when I’m coming” and “g-string/beestings.” Kanye gets the edge on punchlines, and honestly has to get props for a better verse if you consider that he had about as many notable lines in one verse as Hov had in two. That said, there was no merkage here, because neither person really came all that hard [||]. Though Kanye has been consistently above average recently, so props for that isht, and I’m look forward to a Yeezy album where he actually raps, since he hasn’t really done that since Late Registration.

Sidebar: Yo Eskay, lol, when is Nah gonna get a forum? So folks can actually post stuff in relevant threads and isht? No go?

You could listen to Hov’s rhymes on the second verse and tell it would have been good if he would have kept going and the drums and guitar wasn’t beating him down.

Yo I’m a HOV fan all day er’day BUT thats just wayyy 2 much analyzing.
If the track ain’t bangin’ out the gate I don’t fux wit it.
Word to “H to the izzo”& “03 Bonnie & Clyde”

^^^ No do-overs once it hits the nets. Like somebody else said, Hov’s best bet for this is to make it a bonus track on the album. And he should go the Kanye “Diamonds” route and record a remix with an actual hot verse. Damn…. what happened to the Hov that spit on that Diamonds remix?
